Policing and Territories across Napoleonic Europe
From Local to Imperial Scale
Ce colloque international a pour objectif d’interroger le lien entre la police et l’espace impérial napoléonien, en étudiant l’administration, les pratiques policières et le contrôle du territoire dans les départements dits « de l’intérieur », dans ceux annexés, ainsi que dans les différents espaces placés sous contrôle impérial, comme les États satellites et les territoires ultra-marins. Il ambitionne de mette en lumière la diversité des configurations policières et leurs évolutions dans l’Empire, en comparant plusieurs profils d’espaces. Un premier axe d’étude cherche à questionner l’existence ou non d’un système policier centralisé, en réinterrogeant le rapport entre centre et périphérie(s). Un second axe d’études interroge les connexions policières à l’échelle impériale à travers l’examen de plusieurs cas de figure.

Unusual looks: objects, places, agents
On the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution and the inauguration of the Paris-Athens 1780-1919 exhibition, the Louvre Museum and the French School at Athens are organizing an international conference, which will be held at the Louvre Museum and the Institute of France, from 22 to 23 April 2021 under the auspices of the Académie des Inscriptions et des Belles Lettres. This conference also benefits from the support of the Initiative 1821-2021. The languages of the conference will be French and English.

The South Atlantic route and the business of the maritime transport of migrants (1870-1960)
The objective is to propose a special issue to the Journal of Transatlantic Studies, by contributing for the understanding of the business of emigrant maritime transport from the Belle Epoque until the end of the 1960s. The editors of the special issue (Yvette Santos and Paulo César Gonçalves) accept proposals focused on the study of the migration industry linked to the maritime transportation of emigrants from Europe to the South Atlantic countries.

Revolutionary eloquence and rhetorical traditions (18th-19th centuries)
Quel rapport une révolution politique, moment tout entier tendu vers le changement, et donc vers l'avenir, entretient-elle avec les modèles du passé ? Est-il possible de « se passer du passé » ? Le changement brutal, la « régénération » et la « table rase », leitmotive du discours de la Révolution française, ne sont-ils que de vains mots ? […] La question du rapport conflictuel et ambigu des révolutions politiques aux modèles du passé nous invite à réfléchir à la fois aux formes discursives, notamment rhétoriques, dont hérite la Révolution française, et à la manière dont cette dernière les récupère, les rejette ou les transforme, et à la fois à l'influence qu'exerce à son tour la Révolution française sur les discours des révolutions suivantes : là encore, s'agit-il d'une imitation (et, le cas échéant, de quel ordre ?), d'un refus, ou d'une métamorphose ?

Ce colloque interroge l’historicité du concept de réconciliation après les conflits aux XIXe et premier XXe siècles dans une approche sémantique et symbolique. À partir de différents types de conflits et de sources, on saisira la pluralité des conceptions et représentations de la réconciliation ainsi que les acteurs qui les portent : à quel moment et dans quels milieux se produit le retournement entre l’idée de réconciliation fondée sur l’oubli et celle d’une réconciliation impliquant d’affronter ensemble le passé pour construire l’avenir ?

Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) bicentenary conference
Le parcours et l'œuvre de Friedrich Engels demeurent encore souvent dans l'ombre de Karl Marx. L'ambition de ce colloque pluridisciplinaire, organisé les 30 novembre et 1er décembre 2020 à l'université de Strasbourg à l'occasion du bicentenaire de sa naissance, est de rompre avec les idées reçues sur Engels en mobilisant les acquis de la recherche récente en sciences humaines et sociales, afin de projeter sur sa vie et ses travaux une lumière nouvelle.

Following two different and yet complementary approaches (one from the top down with parties and the other from the bottom up with grassroots organizations), we propose to compare how potential voters have been appealed to, through the use of different strategies and tools of communication”. Whether it be organizations or parties, it will be interesting to analyze how these groups either (re)connect citizens with politics or give birth to social movements which durably occupy the political landscape of the United States and the United Kingdom. Common features may be observed along with distinct approaches particularly adapted to the specificity of each country concerned.

En 2019, 150 ans après l'Empire libéral et 140 ans après la conquête de la République par les républicains, la décennie 1869-1879 mérite d'être revisitée. En effet, de nombreux travaux universitaires ont renouvelé le regard aussi bien sur la fin du Second Empire que sur l'apport majeur de la famille libérale et modérée à l'élaboration du « modèle républicain ». La mise à disposition des chercheurs de nouvelles sources privées et iconographiques permet aujourd'hui de reconsidérer cette « République sans les républicains ».

Thinking the afterwar. Latin America (19th-20th centuries)
Cette journée d’études exploratoire vise à dresser un premier état des lieux historiographique sur ces problématiques des après-guerres dans les Amériques latines, en prenant pour borne de départ la première mobilisation armée du XIXe, à savoir les invasions anglaises de 1806 à Buenos Aires, jusqu’à la guerre du Chaco (1932-1935) qui mit aux prises la Bolivie et le Paraguay. Journée pluridisciplinaire, elle sera l'occasion de faire dialoguer historiens et littéraires non seulement sur les spécificités de ces sorties de guerres américaines, mais aussi de réfléchir sur les sources disponibles pour les étudier, en particulier en ce qui concerne le XIXe siècle.

18118-2018: Bicentenary of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte's accession to the thrones of Sweden and Norway
Current state of research
Cette journée d’études entend appréhender l’accession aux trônes de Suède et de Norvège de Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. Il s’agira de considérer cet événement à l’aune des renouvellements historiographiques entamés à l’université de Toulouse Jean Jaurès (UT2J) au sein du laboratoire Framespa il y a maintenant plus de dix ans, et d'en élargir le cadre aux autres universités françaises et à celles, plus lointaines, d'Europe du Nord. Les participants sont ainsi invités à replacer la personnalité et l’exercice du pouvoir par Bernadotte dans une historiographie plus large des bouleversements profonds que connaissent les États européens à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècles.

The seminar on contemporary history of the Department of social and economic sciences of Sapienza University of Rome will organize a conference that will take place from 13 to 14 December 2018 in Rome titled: “The European Left and the Jewish question: Zionism, anti-Semitism and the Arab-Israeli conflict”. The goal is to explore the relationship between the Left and Jews in the two hundred years’ history of the political left, considering three major themes: the Jewish question as seen by left-wing authors; Anti-Semitism and its representations in left-wing culture; The Arab-Israeli conflict as a node of comparison between the Left and the Jewish question.

The European actors of the "People's spring" 1848
170th anniversary international conference
Après le colloque du cent cinquantième anniversaire de 1848 organisé par la Société de 1848 et des révolutions du XIXe siècle qui a marqué un important jalon historiographique, il a paru important, exactement vingt ans plus tard, de porter un nouveau regard sur cet événement majeur du XIXe siècle, et cela en répondant d’abord au souhait maintes fois formulé par Maurice Agulhon d’en mieux connaître les acteurs, au moment précis où le Dictionnaire des dirigeants français de 1848 du Centre d’histoire du XIXe siècle de Sorbonne Université et de Panthéon-Sorbonne, publié sous son patronage, constitue une nouvelle étape qui permet d’aller plus loin ; mais il s’agit aussi d’élargir la focale pour s’intéresser cette fois à l’ensemble du printemps des peuples. La question centrale de ces journées est ainsi : Qu’est-ce qu’être un acteur du printemps des peuples 1848 ?

Court identities and the myth of Versailles in Europe
Perception, adherence and rejection (18th-19th centuries)
The “modern” courts in Europe included the institutional, social, societal and cultural aspects concomitant with the political affirmation of personalities emerging, by agreement or through conflict, from communities exercising power together in order to seize authority for their own personal benefit and to develop a range of encomiastic processes for their own person. In the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, the princely courts in Europe did not confine themselves to one single paradigm. There were as many courts as there were princely houses, as many “national” types, even if some, like the Burgundian court in the 15th century and the courts in northern and central Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries, proposed models and exercised influence from one end of Europe to the other, while accommodating indigenous influences.
