Conference, symposium - History
Publicity, space and time (Europe, 17th to 19th century)
Although bankruptcy was a rather exceptional situation in the life of a merchant, it has explanatory power for routines of economic stakeholders, for their space of experience and their horizon of expectation. We can therefore use the irregularity of failure as an indicator of regularities. Considering the long, non-uniform and unsteady transition from merchant capitalism to industrial and financial capitalism, we suggest to start a dialogue between modernistes and contemporanéistes. The workshop focuses on the various forms of contextualizing business failure and puts forward three major research axes: Covering and Uncovering: Secrecy and Publicity; Economic Space and Area of Jurisdiction; Temporal Narratives of (In)Solvency.

Birth of a discipline - insurance law, between teaching, practice and expertise

Cette journée d’études traite de l’histoire de la discipline « droit des assurances » et a pour ambition de faire la lumière sur la naissance de cette discipline et d’examiner son impact sur l’évolution et la pratique du droit des assurances dans une étroite interaction entre acteurs et institutions. Cette approche entend aussi situer l’essor du droit des assurances dans le contexte, non seulement du développement des chaires d’assurances (notamment au CNAM, au Collège de France notamment), mais également dans l’essor de l’enseignement académique des statistiques et de l’actuariat.

North versus South? Gender, law and economy in Early Modern and Modern Europe (15h-19th century)
The purpose of the conference is to analyse the consequences of different European juridical systems on the development of specific economic roles for men and women. It aims to question the narrative of the “great divergence” between the economies of Northern and Southern Europe in relation with the opportunities that different juridical systems gave to women and men to act in the society as economic actors.

Le projet Fiduciae se propose de fournir, sur la base d’enquêtes empiriques, à la fois précises et ciblées, menées dans des fonds d’archives français, des éléments de validation formalisés et quantifiés de l’hypothèse d’une dépersonnalisation des relations entre commerçants en France et en Europe aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles (vers 1680-vers 1880). L'objet de la journée sera de mettre en dialogue les premiers résultats obtenus dans le cadre du projet et résumés dans un article d'étape en cours d'édition et des recherches empiriques, menées sur des problématiques connexes, dans d'autres disciplines des sciences sociales (sociologie, droit, économie).

New Approaches to the History of Commercial Justice
Merchant courts and merchants’ strategies before the courts have been studied extensively up to date by both historians of law and economic and social historians. However, given the specialisation of historians, the studies tend to have either a legal and administrative, or an economic and social focus. The workshop will gather historians and legal historians to discuss recent research and new methodological approaches to the study of commercial justice from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth Century. The aim is to establish an overview of the current research and to discuss the possibilities of combining both organizational and actor-centred perspectives in the study of commercial litigations.

The 1898 law on workplace accidents and the pricing of bodies in Europe
Depuis quelques années, les travaux portant sur les risques et les maladies professionnelles ont réactivé un champ de recherche émergeant de la décennie 1975-1985, mais qui avait ensuite marqué le pas en France. L’objectif de cette journée d’étude consacrée à la loi de 1898 sur les accidents du travail est de prolonger cette réflexion actuelle sur l’histoire des risques autour d’enjeux à l’interface du droit, de l’économie, de la médecine et de la technique. Elle permettra notamment d’interroger à nouveau les rôles respectifs de l’État, des organisations patronales et des compagnies d’assurance, de mesurer les modalités d’application de la loi, tout en la restituant dans un contexte plus largement européen. -

Ce colloque se situe à l’intersection de l’histoire économique et de l’histoire du droit ou des institutions, et est centré sur les pratiques et les attentes des acteurs de l’économie. En d’autres termes, il s’agit ici de partir des acteurs pour comprendre les raisons qui les motivent à demander l’octroi de privilèges, la manière dont celui-ci s’insère dans leurs pratiques. Il se tiendra à Francfort-sur-le-Main du 30 juin au 2 juillet 2010. -

Power, Institutions, and Global Market
Mechanisms and Foundations of Word-Wide Economic Integration, ca. 1850-1930
Literature on economic globalisation between 1850 and 1930 focuses primarily on the development of the volume of foreign trade between various nation states. Only rarely was this period examined from the perspective of economic actors below the nation state and by explicitly studying the role of the institutional framework which shaped – and was shaped – by their enterprises. Our conference will address these issues, bringing together scholars from economic and business history, global and world history, and history of law.
