  The archives of gender, the gender of archives

  Closing conference of the "Gender and Transmission. For a different archaeology of gender" project (2016-2019)

  Le geste archéologique fonde et alimente la démarche épistémologique et critique des études de genre depuis l’émergence de ces dernières dans les années soixante-dix. Trop longtemps, les femmes, comme le pointaient déjà les militantes du MLF il y a près d’un demi-siècle, n’ont pas eu de passé : moins parce qu’elles ont été absentes de l'Histoire que parce qu’elles l’ont été des matrices de constitution des récits historiques. Contre la méconnaissance parfois concertée dont les femmes semblaient être l’objet paradoxal, il fallait donc s’attacher à retrouver les multiples éléments attestant leur présence, à entendre leurs voix, à recomposer leurs choix et leurs actions – et plus généralement l’immense richesse de ce qu’elles avaient contribué à produire. Dans toutes les sphères de l’existence sociale, il en allait dès lors d’un patient travail de recollection, de conservation et de transmission de fragments épars : une drôle d’archéologie pour faire enfin parler les silences, pour rendre visible ce qui avait été effacé.

  Thinking Places: museum, library, theatre

  Is it possible, while maintaining the momentum of Pierre Nora’ studies on Sites of Memory (Les lieux de mémoire, 1984-87), or Christian Jacob’s current researches on Places of Knowledge (Lieux de savoirs, 2007-2011), to consider particular public places – museums, libraries, theatre, the list is endless – as sites dedicated to the process of thinking, as places where one thinks? To what extent, in which ways, and for what purpose might institutions and places strive for stimulating, elaborating, shaping a thinking process? What kind of institutional, architectural, or design devices would such a dedication to the thinking process involve? What professional or artistic issues, limitations, resources, would this impact?

  The Capacities of Architecture

  The question of the power of architecture cannot be resolved by studying the fulfillment of its functions. Beyond their practical and symbolical functionality, architectural works generate emotions and influence our behaviours. Next to the functional properties of architecture, there is ample room for aesthetic proprieties for affective properties, and for ethical properties which are inherent to architecture because it provides a frame for social relationships and thus helps determine these relations – favourably or unfavourably. What this conference aims to explore is all these closely interrelated affective, cognitive and behavioural dimensions, thus striving to attribute to architecture the role it deserves in the philosophy of art.
