  Transcontinental return journeys - interactions between France and Latin America through cinema

  Dans le cadre du projet « TRANSARCHIVES - Pratiques d’archivage et patrimonialisation du film : rencontres transcontinentales du passé et du présent », soutenu par la Fellowship Européenne Marie Sklodovska Curie, nous vous invitons à une séance et à une journée d’études qui visent à analyser les interactions entre la France et l’Amérique latine à travers le cinéma. Les intervenant se concentreront sur différentes périodes et situations clés telles que : les réalisateurs sans frontières qui ont travaillé des deux côtés de l’océan atlantique, la période révolutionnaire des années soixante et soixante-dix, les visions des critiques cinématographiques clés et aussi les enjeux contemporains liés à la circulation du cinéma latino-américain en France et du cinéma français en l’Amérique latine.

  Envisioning Latin America: Power and Representation in audiovisual (re)productions

  Forma Revista d'Estudis Comparatius. Art, Literatura, Pensament

  This issue seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources.

  Dictatorship and images absent from non-fiction cinema

  Ce numéro de la revue Savoirs en Prisme s’intéresse spécifiquement à l’absence d’image d’archive originelle dans les documentaires réalisés au XXI^e siècle sur les dictatures ibéro-américaines. Il entend interroger la façon dont le cinéma des deux premières décennies utilise diverses stratégies pour évoquer cette absence, ce vide, dans le cadre d’une production qui est principalement centrée sur la construction d’une mémoire des dictatures et dont la plupart des films inscrivent dans le présent un passé de violences dissimulées puis refoulées par l’État et la société. Le recours à différentes stratégies permet de raconter l’indicible, de prendre de la distance avec le sujet et d’éviter la fascination qu’exerce l’horreur sur les spectateurs.

  Rethinking pictures

  A transatlantic dialogue

  On the occasion of the launch of Picturing, the first volume of the Terra Foundation Essays, a new publication series exploring themes of critical importance to the history of arts and visual culture of the United States, the Deutsches Forum für Kunstgeschichte, Paris, and the Terra Foundation for American Art are jointly organizing a conference to further the transatlantic dialogue about what pictures are and what they do. This conference invites speakers to reflect on the differences and convergences between the intellectual traditions of visual studies and Bildwissenschaft. Are there ways to think about pictures anew by bringing these models more closely together?  Does the move away from visuality towards the material offer possibilities for overcoming early differences between these two approaches?
