Revolutionary eloquence and rhetorical traditions (18th-19th centuries)
Quel rapport une révolution politique, moment tout entier tendu vers le changement, et donc vers l'avenir, entretient-elle avec les modèles du passé ? Est-il possible de « se passer du passé » ? Le changement brutal, la « régénération » et la « table rase », leitmotive du discours de la Révolution française, ne sont-ils que de vains mots ? […] La question du rapport conflictuel et ambigu des révolutions politiques aux modèles du passé nous invite à réfléchir à la fois aux formes discursives, notamment rhétoriques, dont hérite la Révolution française, et à la manière dont cette dernière les récupère, les rejette ou les transforme, et à la fois à l'influence qu'exerce à son tour la Révolution française sur les discours des révolutions suivantes : là encore, s'agit-il d'une imitation (et, le cas échéant, de quel ordre ?), d'un refus, ou d'une métamorphose ?

À l’occasion de la présente journée d’études, nous nous proposons de réfléchir à la manière dont l’imaginaire urbain renvoie à des territorialités qui sont simultanément habitées par les écrivains et artistes, l’occupant, les autochtones et ceux qui sont désormais considérés dans leur condition d’exclus, d’étrangers ou de « clandestins ». Nous invitons les contributeurs à s’interroger sur la part de la dimension spatiale dans les écrits (fiction, poésie, écrits intimes, théâtre, etc.) ou les réalisations picturales, musicales des écrivains, artistes et musiciens qui ont réagi face aux mesures introduites à l’encontre des Juifs.

The problem of representation is central to the disciplinary fields of all the human and social sciences, most often implicitly. This omnipresence sometimes makes us forget that it is a notion whose definition, status and function are subject to the fluctuations of history. What interests us is the discrepancy between what this notion has been able to encompass over time and what it encompasses nowadays, as well as the explanation that can be given to these discrepancies or possible ruptures. The reflection focuses in particular on the link between the notion of representation and the notions of 'heritage' - tangible or intangible objects, but also products of a social construction - and of 'memory', since it is constructed through concrete representations, whether social or discursive practices.

A handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches
On June 18th and 19th 2020 the Badische Landesbibliothek organizes the international and interdisciplinary congress “The return of the Wigalois - a handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches”. The congress presents and discusses first results of the again possible scientific altercation with materiality of the handwriting, its production context and the book market at the upper Rhine, for which it was produced.

The 11th annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies
Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union? […]

Guido delle Colonne and his Reception in Medieval Europe
Guido delle Colonne’s Historia destructionis Troiae has been a phenomenal success since its composition at the end of the 13th century. Nevertheless, academic studies remain limited and questions remain open about the author himself (judge, historian and poet?), about his sources – including the essential Trojan novel in verse by Benoît de Saint Maure –, about the construction and style of his work and about its intents in a particularly troubled period. While significant progress has been made in recent years, studies are far from being exhaustive and the case deserve to be considered anew. Historia's interest lies in particular in the translations, adaptations and summaries it generated throughout Europe until the 17th century. This international conference aims thus to shed new lights on the original text as well as on the diversity of its appropriations, between filiation and emancipation. In this regard, the spectacular diffusion has contributed to strenghten a Trojan European literature.

"Thinking the library": Belgian writers' and artists' libraries (19th-21st centuries)
Theme issue of the Textyles journal
Pour un de ses prochains numéros, Textyles, revue des lettres belges de langue française, abordera les bibliothèques d’écrivains et d’artistes (plasticiens, architectes, musiciens) belges, du XIXe siècle à nos jours. Comparé aux bibliothèques d’écrivains et d’artistes français qui ont déjà mené à divers projets de recherche, le champ des bibliothèques belges n’a été encore que peu investigué. Pourtant, la conservation de bibliothèques d’écrivains et d’artistes belges dans diverses institutions (Ghelderode à l’université libre de Bruxelles, Bauchau à l’université Catholique de Louvain, Lemonnier au Musée Camille Lemonnier, etc.) et la publication de quelques inventaires révèlent un terrain de recherche prometteur. Afin d’engager le mouvement, ce numéro propose de penser la bibliothèque selon une perspective à la fois méthodologique, théorique et pratique, à la croisée des arts et de la littérature.

Make our own Walter Benjamin's “Experience and Poverty” ?
We are not in 1933, nor are we threatened, here in Europe, as Walter Benjamin was when, between two apocalypses and already in exile, in an indifference due to historical circumstances, he published his short and incisive text « Experience and Poverty » in a Prague’s newspaper with short-lived existence. However, isn’t the assessment he made of an alliance, by the great creators, between « a total disenchantment about the age » and, nevertheless, « an unlimited commitment to it » also ours ? Not still ours (the Shoah and other catastrophes have shaken up, since then, the order of the thinkable), but again ours, as if we were at the point where, undertaking our poverty today or, disarming voluntarily, would be the lifeline, the way out to escape the inertia promised by a dark future.

The author, his archives and library
Les archives et la bibliothèque d’un écrivain, objets génétiques par excellence, sont un espace de création qui témoigne de la façon dont l’auteur dialogue avec la tradition et entend s’y inscrire à son tour. Qu’il se réfugie dans le silence de l’anonymat ou qu’il mette en exergue son « Je », l’écrivain moderne exerce un contrôle sur son œuvre, sur sa diffusion et sur le message qu’il livre à ses lecteurs contemporains, mais aussi à ceux qui viendront plus tard. La façon dont il conserve ou détruit, dont il sélectionne et agence ses papiers et ses livres est riche d’enseignements : ses archives « font œuvre » et sont les dépositaires de l’image de soi qu’un écrivain souhaite léguer à la postérité. C’est donc en travaillant à restituer aux archives littéraires et aux bibliothèques d’écrivains cette dimension consciemment publique que la figure de l’auteur, dont on a annoncé la mort il y a cinquante ans, pourra enfin ressurgir de ses cendres.

The thought of Henri Bergson (1859-1941), one of the most influential theorists of time of the twentieth century, has primarily been confined to the so-called “continental” tradition of philosophy. In the past few years this has started to change; his work has begun to receive ingenious reassessment from philosophers outside the field of “continental” philosophy in general and within analytic philosophy in particular. The aim of this conference is to capture this moment and use it to provide new perspectives on Bergsonian philosophy, expanding and reassessing Bergson’s legacy and producing a major permutation in the philosophy of time.

Thoughts of children's books in Europe in the 21st century
Since their inception in 2014, the up to now two biennial conferences1 organized by the course team of the master’s degree in children’s literature of the department of education of Cergy University have taken a resolutely interprofessional direction and questioned youth literature from a comparative and international angle. The scientific questioning thus engaged has focused on the contemporary period, while leaving ample room for professionals from various walks to discuss children’s books as cultural productions aimed for young readers. The previous two biennials placed the focus of the reflection on objects ranging from original works to translated or adapted works. This line of questioning intersects in many points with the reflection which the Centre National de la Littérature pour la Jeunesse (CNLJ, BnF) has long been engaged in, as made evident through a number of joint projects conducted by both our university department and the CNLJ2. It is around these common interests that the project of a joint conference has matured over time, while the 2020 biennial now purports to shift the focus from objects proper (understood as books, writers, formats) to mediation practices making these objects (printed or digital) accessible to young readers across Europe.

7th biennial conference of the Réseau européen de recherche sur l'avant-garde et le modernisme
Dans la recherche sur l’avant-garde et le modernisme une des notions clés est celle de crise. Tout au long de leur époque, les avant-gardistes et les modernistes ont été confrontés à des crises, qu’elles soient économiques ou politiques, scientifiques ou technologiques, esthétiques ou philosophiques, collectives ou individuelles, locales ou mondiales, à court ou à long terme. À leur tour, les modernistes et avant-gardistes ont été continuellement accusés d’avoir provoqué des crises, qu’elles soient artistiques ou culturelles, sensorielles ou conceptuelles, accidentelles ou intentionnelles, ayant une grande portée ou une plus négligeable, provocant des crises de représentations ou autres. Les notions mêmes « d’avant-garde » et de « modernisme » sont sans cesse le sujet de et soumises à des crises conceptuelles, laissant la recherche sur l’avant-garde et le modernisme au bord d'une crise théorique aussi perpétuelle qu'autodestructrice.

La “scuola estiva internazionale di Studi leopardiani, pascoliani e montaliani”, di cui ricorre nel 2019 la IV edizione, è un’iniziativa accademica che, attraverso un ciclo intensivo di lezioni, intende approfondire la conoscenza del pensiero e dell’opera di tre dei più importanti poeti italiani dell’Ottocento e del Novecento: Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837), Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912) ed Eugenio Montale (1896-1981; premio Nobel per la Letteratura nel 1975). The statute of French-speaking periodicals
Les recherches sur la presse francophone connaissent actuellement une certaine vitalité : la présente journée d’études organisée à l’université du Mans le 11 juin 2019 s’inscrit dans ce mouvement général en proposant une focalisation sur quelques points. Une première partie de recul méthodologique permettra de mettre en commun deux approches du traitement de ces corpus somme toute nouveaux. Une deuxième partie, axée sur des exemples plus précis, sera l’occasion d’étudier en détails les réalisations permises par les confrontations méthodologiques. Ces différentes appréhensions du statut de la presse francophone reposent sur une mise en commun des méthodes et des orientations permises par l’objet protéiforme que constitue le corpus : elles se complèteront de manière à en souligner les possibilités.

Theorica VII: Politia
Le programme « Theorica » vise, à travers la rencontre de spécialistes du Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance, à revisiter l’idée que l’époque médiévale est une époque asystématique et donc inadaptée à toute théorisation. Dans ce colloque, il est proposé, au contraire, d’étudier les modalités d’élaboration d’un discours théorique à partir des modalités intellectuelles qui façonnent le discours médiéval et de la Renaissance. Pour cette VIIe rencontre, intitulée Politia, nous proposons de réfléchir sur la vertu politique et la translatio studii dans la science politique du Moyen Âge à la Renaissance.
