Intersectional Challenges in Afroeuropean Communities

8th Biennial Afroeuropeans Network Conference

The conference aims to consider how Afroeuropean communities are shaped by the intersections of ‘race’ and ethnicity with other markers of identification such as gender, class, sexuality, ability, age, citizenship status, language… Informed by intersectional thinking and its rejection of unidimensional perspectives in activism, policy and research, the conference explores how diverse processes of privileging and discrimination interact, making for complex and dynamic experiences of what it means to be Afroeuropean. It acknowledges that the racial and ethnic alterity of Afroeuropeans intersects with other identities (e.g. male, female, queer, working class, religious, disabled, aged…) and specifically seeks to examine to what extent these intersections create new alignments and opportunities.

À l’occasion de la présente journée d’études, nous nous proposons de réfléchir à la manière dont l’imaginaire urbain renvoie à des territorialités qui sont simultanément habitées par les écrivains et artistes, l’occupant, les autochtones et ceux qui sont désormais considérés dans leur condition d’exclus, d’étrangers ou de « clandestins ». Nous invitons les contributeurs à s’interroger sur la part de la dimension spatiale dans les écrits (fiction, poésie, écrits intimes, théâtre, etc.) ou les réalisations picturales, musicales des écrivains, artistes et musiciens qui ont réagi face aux mesures introduites à l’encontre des Juifs.

From the city to the nation: continuity and rupture in the history of contemporary Spanish song (19th-21st centuries)

Afin de déconstruire le récit sur la chanson espagnole instrumentalisé par le franquisme, ce colloque invite à réfléchir sur une histoire plus complète et plus complexe de celle-ci, ainsi que sur l’identification des topiques qui ont permis de créer une cohésion nationale à travers la chanson contemporaine. Dans ce cadre, il est également nécessaire de prendre en compte l'importance des chansons dans la création et la transmission des identités liées aux régions, aux villes, aux lieux et même aux quartiers, qui contribuent à l'analyse avec une approche différente. Ce colloque a pour objet d’examiner, dans l’aire culturelle hispanique, les rapports entre chanson et territoire à l’époque contemporaine, de 1808 à nos jours et étudier, dans la chanson, l’évocation des lieux et des imaginaires qu’elle mobilise pour devenir emblématique du territoire national.

Poetry and Politics in the Viking and Norman Diasporas (Ninth-Thirteenth Centuries)

The conference will address the relationships between poetry and power in the medieval world, fostering exchanges between historians and scholars in the fields of Latin and vernacular literatures. The poems under scrutiny will be those composed in the Viking and Norman diasporas between the ninth and the thirteenth century, covering a wide geographical expanse, from Iceland to Southern Italy, through Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia, Kievan Rus’ and part of the Latin East. The main questions which will be studied are: (1) the specific context for the composition of political poetry (e.g. encomiastic or satiric); (2) poetry as a means for the representation of power or the transmission of moral or religious conceptions (e.g. mirrors for princes, didactic or gnomic poetry); (3) the reasons for preferring poetry over prose in order to convey political ideas.

“Marine Feet and Vesuvian Eyes”: The Volcanic Aesthetics of Maria Orsini Natale

Edited Collection

This volume intends to fill a gap in the critical reception of a remarkable Southern Italian woman writer. A journalist, a poet and a writer, Maria Orsini Natale (1928-2010) lived and worked at the foot of Vesuvius, and began writing at age 69, receiving several literary recognitions. Her novel, initially written as Ottocento Vesuviano, then entitled Francesca and Nunziata, and published for the first time in 1995, was also made into a 2001 film directed by Lina Wertmüller, starring Sophia Loren and Giancarlo Giannini. The book earned her a semifinalist’s place in the Strega Prize, the most prestigious Italian literary award, and features a family from Amalfi, dedicated for generations to the white art of pasta making. More than fiction, it illustrates what in Neapolitan is called a ‘cunto’, part historical account and part allegorical tale, derived from a reservoir of collective as well as personal memories.

Ce colloque sera l’occasion de créer un espace consacré à la représentation d’une féminité de l’« entre-deux » dans plusieurs aires géographiques (Espagne, France, Royaume-Uni, États-Unis, etc.). Des questions de genre littéraire, de genre et d’identité sexuelle, de réseaux d’intellectuelles et de géographies spécifiques se rencontrent, notamment sous un angle géocritique, pour mettre en avant des femmes et des représentations de la féminité souvent oubliées. En prenant en compte les quatre « points cardinaux » d’une approche géocritique (multifocalisation, polysensoralité, stratigraphie, intertextualité), nous allons entre autres questionner les espaces de sociabilité de ces femmes et la construction de la moderna ou de la garçonne.

The composition, circulation and collection of songs and poems from the ghettos and Nazi camps

L’objet de cette journée d’études pluridisciplinaire est d’éclairer les stratégies de survie intellectuelle et spirituelle que révèle le vaste corpus de poèmes et de chansons clandestins, produits et souvent mis en circulation dans et à travers les frontières des ghettos et des camps pendant la Shoah. La forme versifiée semble y avoir été privilégiée par un grand nombre de victimes : obéissant à un besoin vital de saisir l’expérience d’une réalité inouïe, elle servait à ordonnancer le chaos, à la soumettre à la versification et à un rythme porteur de sens. S’intéressant aux entreprises de collecte effectuées pendant et juste après la guerre, cette journée abordera également la question de la création artistique dans les « camps de déplacés » des années 1945 à 1949.

Convegno Internazionale Curzio Malaparte e la ricerca dell'identità europea

Il convegno, che si terrà a Torino il 6, il 7 e l'8 giugno, si propone di esplorare l’opera di Curzio Malaparte seguendo il filo rosso della sua riflessione sull’Europa, con l’intenzione di ricomporre e analizzare il complesso quadro dell’immaginario letterario che questo paesaggio rappresenta. A partire dai grandi mutamenti che subisce il panorama storico-geografico nel quale l’autore si muove negli anni 1920-1950, si vuole ragionare sullo sviluppo del tema dell’identità europea all’interno dell’opera malaprtiana per studiarne la poetica, le forme e le modalità espressive. L’obiettivo fondamentale del convegno è precisamente quello di ampliare l’indagine sulla narrativa malapartiana e rilanciare il dibattito sulla produzione letteraria dello scrittore, per individuare nuove prospettive di ricerca che investano sia l’area linguistico-letteraria sia quella storico-antropologica.

Péter Esterházy, maître incontestable de la prose hongroise contemporaine, s’est éteint en 2016. Depuis Trois anges me surveillent, ses romans figurent parmi les textes les plus importants de la littérature postmoderne et sont disponibles dans l’Hexagone, essentiellement chez Gallimard. Ce colloque international, le premier dans l’espace francophone, a pour objectif de lui rendre hommage en réunissant des spécialistes de l’auteur, des traducteurs, des chercheurs en littérature comparée et des historiens. Articulée autour de quelques axes fondamentaux, comme la narratologie, l’histoire des idées, la traduction et l’intertextualité, la manifestation cherche à porter un regard critique français sur l’œuvre de l’écrivain magyar.
