    Poetics of the Algorithm

Narrative, the Digital, and ‘Unidentified’ Media

It seems that narrative today is undergoing a radical change in its "source code". New technologies are changing the way texts are produced, distributed, viewed and read. The conference Poetics of the Algorithm intends to chart the implications of this shift. What does it mean that through digital technologies we can now experience on the surface of a single (touch) screen previously distinct media, artefacts and events such as literature in codex form, comic books, exhibitions, films, photographs, visual art and so on? Has medium-specificity become an obsolete notion given that binary code and algorithms seem to bypass material constraints?

Figures of media variations: strategies, discourses, measures

Call for articles for the 2014 issue of the Les enjeux de l’information et de la communication journal

    Study days - Modern

Digital comic books - comic books in the digital age

    Nhumérisme junior lab study day

    Book and Videogame

    Studies in Book Culture

If the links between video games and movies have generated interest amongst members of the academic milieu for some time now, the relationships, exchanges and boundaries themselves between the book and the video game constitute a field of research that remains relatively fallow. Nevertheless, the interactions between these two media are far from being exceptions, and the disciplines that focus on them (game studies and the history of the book) share a certain methodological affinity: both have a profoundly interdisciplinary basis; both assemble researchers stemming from very different horizons around a common goal. This kinship, combined with the abundance of continual exchanges between book and video game, prompted the idea to devote this issue to encounters between videogames and their adjacent books.

The issues and futures of communication

The concept of communication(s) itself is in constant mutation, reflecting the evolution of media technologies, and more broadly communication practices, which are continually in the process of redefinition and diversification. The questions on the nature and challenges of communication always have to be contemporary. Thus, the conference “Challenges and Futures of Communication” has as its objective to interrogate the meanings, the practices (new and old alike), and challenges posed by communication. For this event, we invite propositions that incorporate theoretical endeavours and/or research-creation disseminated as multimedia, installations, performances or design works in link with your research interests as graduate students or recently graduated from a communication program. The event will take place in Montreal, April 5th & 6th.
