Christian-Muslim Missionary Encounters, Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries
Mission and Modernity Research Academy (MiMoRA#3)
The study of missionary work occupies a central place in the interdisciplinary body of scholarship on relations and exchanges between Christianity and Islam in pre-modern as well as modern times. Most notably from the nineteenth century onwards, missions became an essential aspect of the globalization and modernization of these two ‘world religions’. Scholars from various disciplines have discovered the missionary encounter as a ‘space’ par excellence to observe and analyze Christian-Muslim interactions, which range from rejection and conflict to dialogue and mutual exchange. This research requires the breaching of the boundaries between disciplines, languages, scripts, archival heuristics, geographical and chronological specialisms; and the creation of an interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue. The aim of this international and multidisciplinary week-long research academy is to stimulate further critical study of the multilateral research on Christian-Muslim contacts and relationships in missionary contexts.

Fidèle à sa mission fédératrice, l’université de la Manouba annonce l’organisation de la VIIIe édition de son symposium scientifique, un événement phare au cours duquel elle invite annuellement les chercheurs de tout horizon à adopter une approche réflexive et à croiser les regards disciplinaires autour du système des catégories modales que l’on utilise pour distinguer les différents rapports de la pensée aux choses et au monde. Après la transversalité, le territoire, les représentations, le temps, l'ordre, les normes et le genre, trois catégories sont proposées pour la réflexion pluridisciplinaire de 2020 : le réel, le virtuel et l’imaginaire.

Magic, religion and cultural identity in Central Africa - collective work

Dans la complexité de nos sociétés contemporaines où l'identité culturelle est de plus en plus menacée par la mondialisation, la définition le rôle du magico-religieux dans la construction de l'identité culturelle restent sans cesse questionnés. Il s'agit d'une étude globale du magico-religieux et de son enjeu dans la lutte identitaire des peuples. Cet ouvrage n a pas seulement pour ambition de faire état des lieux des pratiques magico-rélogieuses dans les pays d'Afrique subsaharienne, mais également d'analyser la façon dont les luttes identitaires puisent dans cet univers des ressources pour conforter l'identité culturelle des peuples. Nous souhaitons collecter des contributions qui proposent des réponses à la question suivante : dans quelle mesure le magico-religieux peut il constituer un enjeu de luttes identitaires des peuples ?

Dressing Divinely: clothed or naked deities an devotees
The XVII International Colloquium of the Association ARYS (Antiquity, Religions and Societies) is dedicated to the study of the links between religious identity and clothing within the framework of ancient societies and religions, from the perspective of the images either of the gods or of their devotees. Within the topic of religious clothing will be included the religious use of clothes and attributes, accesories, ornaments, body modifications such as mutilations or tattoos, hairstyles, nudity and, of course, the action itself of dressing or undressing, its conception and positive, neutral or negative consideration, or the act of assuming any of those human or divine complements, adornments, attributes or modifications of the body. We welcome the participation of consolidated as well as early-career specialists in the field of ancient history, archaeology, religious sciences, art history and historiography of religions.

The techno-realities are seen as a threat to human relationships in “real” life, in particular when they relate to love. Such human-shaped products however multiply: domotic spouse, tactile screen’s boyfriend, holographic companion, bride for Virtual Reality glasses, interactive downloadable partner, otome games and bishôjo games characters... The purpose of this symposium is to analyze Love Simulation Devices as signals allowing users to express a variety of messages, even contradictory ones, yet to be deciphered within their specific contexts. Working on the Japanese products will provide a revealing insight of processes that still have not been analyzed and may serve as an eye-opener in the field of comparative studies in the western cultures.

Mobilisations patrimoniales et religieuses en miroir
Ce colloque interrogera la fabrique du patrimoine religieux dans les Afriques. Depuis la fin des années 1970, le patrimoine s'entend comme « une notion (…) qui couvre de façon nécessairement vague tous les biens, tous les “trésors” du passé » (Babelon et Chastel 1980). Le patrimoine n’est plus seulement monumental : il se démultiplie et se décline de mille et une manières. Ainsi les Afriques sont-elles traversées par des mouvements multiples qui mobilisent leurs acteurs sociaux autour de questions aussi diverses que patrimoine religieux et identité ethnico-raciale, patrimoine religieux et imaginaire national, mise en patrimoine de lieux saints, d’archives locales et orales, patrimoine religieux et arts contemporains, patrimoines religieux immatériels, patrimoine religieux et plateformes numériques, mais également un refus iconoclaste des mises en patrimoine du religieux par certains mouvements fondamentalistes.

Litany in the Arts and Culture
The litany derives from ancient religious rites. Throughout the ages, however, it spread across many countries and became much more than a mere form of prayer. As has been demonstrated by our recent studies on the litanic forms in European poetry it is possible to reconstruct a cultural and literary map of European regions that traces the level of their participation in and contribution to the litanic tradition. The litanic verse is marked by religious semantics, but it also bears the mark of inter-European divisions, such as those experienced between and within various denominations, countries and nations, as well as the original folk cultures. Therefore, the litany may be of interest to scholars specializing in areas such the emergence of national identities and religious minorities, the crossover between art and religion as well as between music and poetry, the history of liturgy and spiritual life, the cultural exchanges between various nations.

The spectacle of religion - individual commitment and community constructions
Les historiens de l’Antiquité ont admis le caractère profondément pluriel des pratiques religieuses qui sont articulées, en particulier, au politique, au culturel ou encore aux modèles éducatifs. Or le lien entre religion et spectacle, souvent évoqué dans les études sur les religions anciennes, n’a suscité à ce jour que peu d’études approfondies. Il s’agira pour le colloque de s’interroger sur les modalités de participation des acteurs du rituel en prenant en compte ce que nous pourrions appeler le caractère « spectaculaire » des célébrations religieuses.

Des chercheurs de différentes disciplines échangeront leurs expériences de terrain de manière à encourager des approches renouvelées de la religion vécue par les Égyptiens. La coexistence, les conflits et les circulations seront appréhendés de manière à montrer comment les questions religieuses se mèlent aux aspects politiques, sociaux ou culturels de la vie des Égyptiens.

Reform: what heritage for Europe?
Historiographical assessment
Il s'agit, lors de cette journée, de lancer une vaste réflexion sur l'héritage de la Réforme dans le contexte européen. Des chercheurs de France, d'Allemagne, de Suède et de Norvège dresseront un bilan historiographique et analyseront les schémas de « sécularisation » qui se sont développés en terres protestantes et catholiques. La manifestation se poursuivra le lendemain avec une table ronde réunissant des jeunes chercheurs (mastérants et doctorants) qui présenteront leurs recherches. Ce projet comprend également une série de séminaires (2016-2017) et un colloque prévu à l'automne 2017.

“Purity” and “Impurity” establish themselves as structural categories in both Islam and Judaism, embracing dimensions as diverse as the body, food, clothing and even space itself. The 2nd issue of the journal Hamsa will be devoted to this wide-ranging theme, seeking to obtain diachronic historical perspectives. To this effect, we aim to promote the analysis of interfaith relationships, in those instances where purity and impurity are projected in contacts with the Other. Those dimensions concern not only the minorities, but also affect Christianitas itself, through interiorization of these concepts and their application to minority communities (as is the case, for example, with limpeza de sangue - “cleanliness of blood”).

Eroticism and sexuality in the performance arts
Workshops for young researchers: eroticism and ethnoscenology
Armindo Biao (co-fondateur de l’ethnoscénologie, université Fédérale de Bahia) avait entrepris un projet de recherche sur les fondements de l’imaginaire érotique dans les arts du spectacle vivant auquel étaient associé(e)s les jeunes chercheur(e)s du réseau-ethnoscénologie et de la Société française d’ethnoscénologie. Les journées d’étude des 23 et 24 octobre 2014 sont l’occasion de lui rendre hommage. Alors que de nombreux travaux portent sur les origines rituelles du spectacle vivant, ses fondements érotiques restent le plus souvent ignorés ou sous-estimés. Quels sont les fondements qui dans toutes les sociétés associent le spectacle vivant à l’érotisme et à la sexualité aussi bien qu’au politique et aux croyances ? Comment les analyser dans les perspectives de l’ethnoscénologie ?
