The Classics in the Pulpit. Ancient Literature and Preaching in the Middle Ages
The aim of the conference is to shed new light on this both striking and irritating practice. Papers (25 min) can deal with topics such as the reasons and occasions for the use of the classics in preaching, the hermeneutic and literary strategies applied in order to adapt pagan mythology to homiletic needs, the social and educational background of preachers and their audiences, the connections of classicizing sermons with other fields of literature such as vernacular poetry, or the discourse they provoked within the clerical milieu. Applications from all relevant disciplines (e.g. history, literature, theology, philosophy) are welcome.

Violence in Plato’s philosophy

The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the conception of conflict and violence within Plato’s philosophy. Conflict and violence are often regarded as two of Plato’s main interests in his political thought, especially when he discusses the dread and danger they bring to the city. However, is it possible to understand conflict and violence in Plato’s work only from this political and rather pejorative standpoint? It is possible to see conflict and violence in Plato’s philosophy as something else, rather than a threat to the harmony of the community?

Artus Désiré. Fighting through song
Ce séminaire vise à étudier le rôle d’Artus Désiré (c. 1510 – c. 1579) dans les combats spirituels en musique menés dans le contexte du déclenchement des guerres de religion en confrontant des approches historique (T. Debbagi Baranova), littéraire (J. Goeury) et musicologique (A. Tacaille). Trois recueils du polémiste catholique feront en particulier l’objet d’une analyse systématique : les Hymnes ecclesiastiques (1ere éd., Rouen, 1553), le Contrepoison des cinquante-deux chansons de Clément Marot (Paris, 1560), les Plaisans et armonieux cantiques (Paris, 1561). Ce séminaire est ouvert à tous.

Engendering Scandal: Children and Childhood in the Early Modern Period
History, Literature, Memory
This international two-day colloquium aims to analyse how and why the child, as an individual or in a group, could take part in the engendering process of scandal, and could even influence its meanings when more directly involved. It also aims to explore how narratives, even when confined to the judicial sphere (such as factums), could make sense of childhood, map its emotional realms, thus contributing to a better understanding of changing social and cultural norms and emotions relating to children.

Maternal Sacrifice in Jewish Culture
Rethinking Sacrifice from a Maternal Perspective in Religion, Art, and Culture
The phrase “maternal sacrifice” combines two complex terms entangled in an even more complex dynamic. First of all, “sacrifice”, a word whose definitions have been considered inadequate to describe the multiformity of practices and meanings it evokes as a ritual, as a narrative, and as a metaphor. James Watts distinguishes between “narrative traditions about killing people”, oriented towards an evaluation of killing and murder, and “the ritual killing of animals”, focused on the social functions of ritual and religion (Watts 2011, 8). To those categories a third level can be added that is related to the metaphorical use of the notion of sacrifice as the act of giving up something in order to attain a higher goal.

“New Comparative Mythology” Journal, 5
New Comparative Mythology, a peer-reviewed journal of comparative mythology with an international editorial board, issues, for its fifth volume, a call for papers on the topic “conception, birth and childhood”. In many mythologies, these three initial phases of the existence of divine, heroic, monstrous and other figures have given rise to many traditions. In addition, various beliefs and practices, which are lent legendary or mythical precedents, also rhythm this period which goes from the fertilization to the edge of the initiatory phase of the individuals. It is on the comparative study of this vast field of research that the articles submitted to our review will have to relate.

The imaginary worlds of change
Alors que prolifèrent les mythologies modernes accompagnant l’homme dans un mode de vie en perpétuel renouveau, le discours critique contemporain, quoique sensible à ces mutations profondes, ne semble pas accorder à l’imaginaire du changement, qui est au cœur de ces processus, toute l’attention requise. Aujourd’hui, à l’heure de la mondialisation, ce qui ressemble à un ouragan de changements prend un nouvel élan. Cette nouvelle ère ne cesse de dicter ses canons, et d’aiguillonner les sociétés, notamment les plus rétives, à opérer des transformations structurelles, qu’elles soient d’ordre socioculturel, économique, politique ou juridique. La révolution technologique et l’émergence des moyens de communication modernes, ayant transformé le monde en un « village global », ont aboli les distances et ébranlé les anciennes évidences identitaires imposant à l’homme de s’engager sur la voie du changement et d’envisager un avenir autre.

The meaning of form in Ancien Régime Europe - politics, its instruments and expressions
Expressions et instruments du politique
Les arts d’Ancien Régime étaient souvent des arts de circonstance, au discours contraint, sans que ce constat doive entraîner un quelconque jugement de valeur esthétique, en ce que ces arts prennent leur sens plein dans un contexte social dont le jeu politique n’est jamais complètement absent. De nombreux indices invitent donc à reconsidérer la littérature de la première modernité dans le cadre social et idéologique qui était le sien et à aborder les choix esthétiques non plus seulement comme l’expression de préférences personnelles mais également comme celle d’un projet lié au groupe auquel l'artiste se rattache. Nous nous proposons donc d’examiner le lien entre le politique et les arts en prêtant une attention redoublée au contexte d’énonciation ou de performance des œuvres, afin de faire apparaître la dimension politique des choix esthétiques même en l’absence de contenus explicitement politiques.

Thinking freely in religion in English-speaking countries
This conference will explore the different ways by which thinking freely in religion has been understood and practiced in English-speaking countries since the Middle Ages. The starting point is the peculiar way by which freethought has been historically associated with hostility to religion. What is, therefore, thinking freely in religion? The conference calls for papers about the free spaces created by religious traditions and institutions in the English-speaking world and about how these spaces relate to freethought and to any way of thinking freely that is hostile to religion. The conference aims for a long-term perspective on the interactions between freethought and thinking freely, and calls for papers on any historical period from the Middle Ages to the present.

Le troisième atelier consacré aux dieux d'Homère portera sur l'articulation des épithètes dites littéraires et les épiclèses relevant de contextes rituels ou cultuels. Il s'agira, dans l'esprit du projet ERC-MAP d'aborder les attributs onomastiques comme un véritable langage, susceptible de faire système et d’évoluer au gré des contextes d’énonciation. L’objectif de la réunion sera de faire ressortir la complexité et la polysémie des outils onomastiques, ainsi que la multiplicité des enjeux qui y sont liés. Ce sera aussi l’occasion d’interroger les contours des catégories sans doute trop figées de « théonymes » et d’« épithètes », mais aussi d’« épiclèses (cultuelles) » et d’« épithètes (littéraires) ». Loin d’être un simple ornement ou ingrédient technique, l’épithète participe pleinement à la fabrique du divin en pays polythéiste et à la représentation des puissances invisibles.

Clerical and monastic communities in the Carolingian World (8th-10th)
The Carolingian era has seen by many as a time when the Church became increasingly institutionalised. One of the main aspects of this development, exemplified by the series of councils held between 816 and 819, was a (re)definition of the canonical and monastic orders and the requirement for each community in the realm to comply either with the institutiones canonicorum and sanctimonialium or with the Rule of Benedict. Despite the influential works of J. Semmler or R. Schieffer, however, the real impact of these proposed reforms is still an open question, and from this perspective, the very notion of institutionalisation can also be questioned.

V International Conference on Mythcriticism
The V International Conference on Mythcriticism “Myth and Audiovisual Creation” will analyze the impact of myth in audiovisual creation from 1900 to the present day. The Conference will be organized in four universities during two weeks.The Conference will be divided into 4 venues according to different themes: "Germanic Myths" in the University of Alcalá, "Classical Myths" in the University Autónoma, "Biblical Myths" in the University Francisco de Vitoria and "Modern Myths" in the University Complutense. Researchers can send to one of their 4 venues their abstracts. They will have to analyze the relevance of film, TV series and video games in the creation and modification of old, medieval and modern myths to our contemporary world.

Appropriations, métaphores et analogies
La littérature, la philosophie, les études religieuses, l’histoire des sciences et l'histoire de l’art se sont penchées depuis longtemps sur le phénomène de la lumière, qui est aussi devenue un matériau de création (Light art, László Moholy-Nagy, Dan Flavin, James Turrell, etc.). La lumière joue aussi, chez certains compositeurs, un rôle important (Liszt, Wagner, Mahler, Scriabine, etc.). Si des travaux ont été consacrés aux questions de couleurs et de synesthésie, la lumière n’a pourtant pas en elle-même fait l’objet d’une réflexion particulière et synthétique dans le domaine musical. Il s’agira d’étudier, à travers différentes périodes, les liens entre lumière et musique, mais aussi ce que véhicule la référence à la lumière son rapport à d’autres disciplines.

Travail critique sur les tropes idéologiques du mondial, par une histoire comparée des pensées de la différence culturelle dans la modernité européenne, attentive aux implications coloniales indissociables des géopolitiques du savoir "moderne". S'attachant aux contre-mondialisations que fournit l'histoire des transnationalités islamiques, on décomplète l'histoire mondiale : on "provincialise" l'Euro-Amérique et on réintroduit la complexité d'une histoire connectée des formes politico-culturelles. Mais on se place aussi sur l'une des lignes de fissure critiques qui organise le jeu de la différence et des luttes dans les rapports de monde, où s'est enkystée une configuration spécifique de la mondialisation : la polarisation géoculturelle "Occident"/"Islam". Il s'agit de faire agir cette critique islamique de la mondialisation et de sa géoéconomie "de la connaissance", aux interfaces postcoloniales anglophone et francophone.
