Paray-le-Monial
Le Carnet parodien d’histoire de l’art et d’archéologie est un nouveau carnet de recherche publié en ligne sur la plateforme d'OpenEdition, Hypothèses. Il propose à de jeunes chercheurs comme à des chercheurs confirmés de publier des articles et posters en lien avec le thème annuel du colloque de Paray-le-Monial. Les posters sont exposés lors du colloque (3-4 octobre 2020). Cette année, le thème est « Reliques et pèlerinages ». Les articles et posters peuvent concerner toutes les périodes mais doivent privilégier des sujets liés à l'Europe occidentale.

Of bones and tears. Preparing bodies, mourning and honouring the dead
12th conference of the Funerary Archaeology and Anthropology Group (Gaaf)
La XIIe rencontre du Groupe d'archéologie et d'anthropologie funéraires (Gaaf) aura pour objectif de discuter des funérailles, au sens le plus large du terme, autorisant le passage entre le jour de la vie et les ténèbres de la mort. Il s’agira d’aborder l’ensemble des gestes portés sur ou autour du corps et de la tombe, avant, pendant et après le dépôt du défunt, qu’ils soient anecdotiques ou révélateurs d’une chaîne opératoire. Un tel sujet permet en effet d'évoquer, non seulement les gestes techniques qui conduisent au bon déroulement des funérailles, mais aussi les gestes constitutifs de la tombe, les gestes rituels, les gestes de préparation du défunt ainsi que ceux liés à la mémoire, réactivant le souvenir.

Ancient religion in rural settlements
XVIII International ARYS Conference
This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

Strategies of Human-Divine Communication in the Roman Empire from Individual Experience to Social Reproduction
The Department of Historical Science at the University of Málaga and the Institute of Historiography “Julio Caro Baroja” at the University of Carlos III of Madrid are organizing an international conference titled “Calling upon gods, offering bodies. Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. Researchers of Ancient History, History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and other related fields are invited to present their research on this topic. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

Ritual temporalities in Mesoamerica - interdisciplinary approaches
Approches interdisciplinaires
Le rituel est entendu au sens d’une série d’actions spécifiques et formalisées qui, en introduisant un scénario différent des activités quotidiennes, produisent des modifications, éventuellement transitoires, au sein d’un contexte initial. Ainsi en est-il, notamment, des rituels liés à la fabrication des artéfacts, aux cycles de la vie, à la résolution de conflits, à l’intronisation de gouvernants ou de responsables, ou encore aux pratiques d’installation et d’abandon, de réutilisation ou de reconversion d’espaces socialisés. Trois types principaux d’action — créer, détruire, transformer — ont été spécialement explorés, qui permettent de saisir les processus de transition dans leurs dimensions temporelles. Dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, ils présentent l’avantage d’inviter à aborder conjointement la multiplicité des modalités d’action mises en œuvre dans les rites et la performativité des gestes et des discours.

Incense and religion in ancient societies
Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.

Ce colloque souhaite aborder la « figure martinienne » dans toute son ampleur et tout son rayonnement. Plusieurs disciplines scientifiques, histoire, archéologie, histoire de l’art, études littéraires, ethnologie et anthropologie, théologie, économie politique, sont conviées à converger sur quelques thèmes fondamentaux.

The Face of the Dead and the Early Christian World
The theme chosen for this meeting is the study of funerary images in the transition between late antiquity and the Middle Ages. The central question will a reflection on the function of the funerary images in a broad sense, but also their impact on the early christian world. The choice of the chronological time also shows the second intention of the colloquium: this is an attempt to explain why the ancient funerary tradition of the image will eventually disappear, replaced by other figures of the representative functions. Through various media - from the mosaic and painting, through sculpture and ending with gilded glasses - there will be presented one of the nodal representation of the self: the human face on the border between life and death. -
