Postdoc position ERC "Mapping Ancient Polytheisms"
The ERC Advanced Grant Project 741182 MAP (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Inteface between Religious Systems and Human Agency), led by Corinne Bonnet, is now accepting applications for a postdoctoral position (100%) from the 01/03/2021 at the Université Toulouse – Jean Jaurès. This call for applications is addressed, in particular, to researchers in the history of the religions of antiquity, with an excellent knowledge of ancient Greek and a good familiarity with epigraphical corpora.

These stays can be from 2 to 4 months per researcher, with the exclusion of the months of July and August (due to the fact that the university is closed for a large part of the summer). Guest researchers will work within the team, exchanging therein and participating in the improvement of the databases. Guest researchers will equally be requested to take part in MAP scientific activities (seminars, workshops, conferences…). The position of guest researcher and this call for applications is open to everybody, of French or foreign nationality, whose competences and project are deemed to be of interest to the MAP project.

The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the conception of conflict and violence within Plato’s philosophy. Conflict and violence are often regarded as two of Plato’s main interests in his political thought, especially when he discusses the dread and danger they bring to the city. However, is it possible to understand conflict and violence in Plato’s work only from this political and rather pejorative standpoint? It is possible to see conflict and violence in Plato’s philosophy as something else, rather than a threat to the harmony of the community?

Exploring the potentials of the name in images, in narratives
The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 4: Exploring the potentials of the name in images, in narratives” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. By focusing on names, images and narratives, we will look for connections but also discrepancies, in order to highlight, from duly selected cases or files, the specifications of the different languages used to unfold the potentials of the divine names. In the spirit of the MAP project, we will pay special attention to the links that the names, the images and the narratives convey.

“Guest researchers” - Project ERC Mapping Ancient Polytheisms
Over the next three years, the ERC Advanced Grant MAP 741182 project has budgetary support available in order to invite researchers. These stays can be from 2 to 4 months per researcher, with the exclusion of the months of July and August (due to the fact that the university is closed for a large part of the summer). Guest researchers will work within the team, exchanging therein and participating in the improvement of the databases. Guest researchers will equally be requested to take part in MAP scientific activities (seminars, workshops, conferences…). The position of guest researcher and this call for applications is open to everyone, of French or foreign nationality, with a Doctorate Degree (or an equivalent degree) wherein the competence and project are deemed to be of interest for the MAP project.

ERC Advanced Grant MAP project (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency)
The ERC Advanced Grant MAP project (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Interface between Religious Systems and Human Agency; 741182; http://map-polytheisms.huma-num.fr1) works on the naming systems for the divine in the Greek and Western Semitic worlds, from 1000 BCE to 400 CE and views them as testimonies to the way in which divine powers are constructed, arranged and involved within ritual. The analysis deals both with the structural aspects of the religious systems and with their contextual appropriation by social participants. Considered to be elements of a complex language, the onomastic channels are related to the gods, therefore providing access to a mapping process of the divine, to its ways of representation and to the communication strategies between men and gods.Within this framework, the MAP Team proposes a Summer School in collaboration with the French Research Centre in Jerusalem (http://www.crfj.org) which covers the project’s themes and tools.

In gods' name! Gods at the border
L’objectif du séminaire est de poursuivre notre réflexion collective sur les noms des dieux et les stratégies de dénominations dans la fabrique du divin, en considérant des dossiers qui sont aux frontières – géographiques etchronologiques – de notre projet, en particulier : les textes ougaritiques, les mondes hittites et mésopotamiens, ainsi que l’Iran (achéménide), la Gaule, Rome et l’Arabie pré-islamique.

Taking in divine epithets and their circulation
Homer's gods II - EURYOPA
Le troisième atelier consacré aux dieux d'Homère portera sur l'articulation des épithètes dites littéraires et les épiclèses relevant de contextes rituels ou cultuels. Il s'agira, dans l'esprit du projet ERC-MAP d'aborder les attributs onomastiques comme un véritable langage, susceptible de faire système et d’évoluer au gré des contextes d’énonciation. L’objectif de la réunion sera de faire ressortir la complexité et la polysémie des outils onomastiques, ainsi que la multiplicité des enjeux qui y sont liés. Ce sera aussi l’occasion d’interroger les contours des catégories sans doute trop figées de « théonymes » et d’« épithètes », mais aussi d’« épiclèses (cultuelles) » et d’« épithètes (littéraires) ». Loin d’être un simple ornement ou ingrédient technique, l’épithète participe pleinement à la fabrique du divin en pays polythéiste et à la représentation des puissances invisibles.

Artémidore et l'interprétation des rêves
Cinquième journée d'études
Le seul traité antique d’onirocritique préservé dans sa totalité est celui d’Artémidore de Daldis, auteur grec de la fin du IIe siècle de notre ère. Depuis septembre 2007, le groupe Artémidore en a entrepris une nouvelle édition et traduction annotée. En mars 2009, il a organisé une première journée d’études autour de cette œuvre et de l’interprétation des rêves en général. Celle-ci sera la cinquième.

Notre colloque réunira une vingtaine d’intervenants, français, allemands et italiens, philologues, historiens, codicologues, tous spécialistes des traités de Théophile Protospathaire (VIIe-IXe siècle) ou des productions médicales strictement liées à ce médecin. Cette rencontre scientifique nous donnera l'occasion de débattre autour du corpus d'une dizaine de traités médicaux qui lui sont attribués et des interrogations qu'il suscite, notamment au sujet des sources, techniques et finalités de la réécriture chrétienne dans le cadre du milieu intellectuel et social de Théophile et des lecteurs / utilisateurs de son œuvre. Nous espérons éclairer également la question de l'unité d'auteur, de la datation des divers traités, du lexique et de la réception de ce corpus.

Katábasis in the Ancient Greek Literary Tradition and Religious Thought
Les croyances sur l'au-delà sont universellement répandues, ainsi que l'idée de pouvoir se rendre aux enfers, grâce à un « voyage vers le bas » (katábasis). La première catabase connue remonte aux premiers textes grecs conservés (l'Odyssée d’Homère), et l’omniprésence du thème dans les mentalités anciennes est telle qu’elle rend impérieuse un approfondissement de la recherche. Au-delà de la définition superficielle, « une descente aux enfers », il faut comprendre que ce voyage met en action toutes les tensions entre vie et mort, entre humanité et divinité, entre ici-bas et au-delà. Si la catégorie générale de catabase est logique, elle est plurielle et cache tout un système de représentations de la mort et de l'au-delà, des possibilités de s'y rendre dès son vivant et d'en revenir, de ses chemins et des puissances divines qu’on y croise. La représentation du phénomène emprunte des voies très variées : narratives, plastiques, symboliques ou encore conceptuelles, sans oublier les relectures et les recouvrements sur un millénaire d’histoire. Le thème enfin est à la croisée de multiples chemins : religion grecque et histoire comparée des religions, philosophie ancienne, mythologie et littérature, philologie, histoire, archéologie, iconographie et anthropologie culturelle.

Invitation to an interdisciplinary dialogue around the Homeric corpus
Readings of Homer at the Center For Hellenic Studies
N’a t-on pas tout dit sur Homère et les épopées monumentales « qui ont éduqué la Grèce » et qui continuent à nous éduquer ? Malgré l’étude continue de ces poèmes fabuleux, les grandes questions demeurent ouvertes : datation, lieu de composition, auteur, diffusion, formation des épopées monumentales, modes de composition et de transmission… Les travaux menées au CHS par Douglas Frame, Leonard Muellner et Gregory Nagy adoptent une approche résolument interdisciplinaire, tout en partant de l’étude philologique minutieuse des textes, considérée comme le cadre indispensable et le fondement de toute recherche et interrogation sur l’épopée.

Symposium CorHaLi XXI. Les Trois Électre
Les auteurs tragiques grecs qui ont composé les pièces où sont mis en scène leurs héros malheureux n’ont pas inventé les histoires, les mythes, pourtant associés à leur nom. Le public savait avant la pièce de Sophocle, qu’Œdipe avait tué son père en ignorant que c’était son père et couché avec sa mère sans savoir que c’était sa mère. Le théâtre de ces auteurs du Ve siècle était inscrit dans la vie politique et religieuse de la cité. On attendait la mise en scène des mêmes mythes, et avec un appareil dramaturgique qui, sans être totalement absent, ne disposait bien évidemment pas des effets spéciaux qui corsent le spectacle de nos jours. Et pourtant le public venait voir ces pièces avec un plaisir toujours renouvelé. L’intérêt du drame résidait entièrement en ces mises en formes singulières, qui menaient l’intrigue vers la catastrophe attendue, mais sans que cette dernière fût le clou du spectacle. -

Lois des dieux, lois des hommes
Partant de la thématique générale « Les dieux et les hommes » (programme de culture antique des classes préparatoires littéraires pour 2010-2012), les deux journées d'études porteront en priorité sur « les lois des dieux et les lois des hommes ». Le cadre principal sera celui de l’antiquité gréco-romaine, d’Homère au Vè siècle ap. J.-C., sans exclure pour autant les autres cultures issues du monde indo-européen et antérieures au monde grec, ou encore le monde punique, dans une approche pluridisciplinaire : historique, littéraire, philosophique, sociologique, anthropologique ou philologique.
