Gnwt (Genout) est une revue annuelle publiée au mois de septembre. Elle est éditée par le Réseau des enseignants-chercheurs en égyptologie et civilisations d’Afrique noire (RECECAN). Elle publie les articles des domaines des langues, des lettres, des sciences de l’homme et de la société, qui portent de préférence sur l’histoire ancienne de l’Afrique noire. Une rubrique varia peut cependant être consacrée à la diffusion des articles inédits en rapport avec d’autres périodes de l’histoire africaine. Tous ces savoirs doivent néanmoins avoir pour grille de lecture et fil conducteur les sources essentiellement endogènes de première main pouvant contribuer à une meilleure lecture et compréhension du passé séculaire de l’Afrique noire.

XVIII International ARYS Conference
This conference aims to deconstruct the ideas of rural religion as mechanically reproducing urban rituals and religious hierarchies and of the rural world as a space of cultural and religious resilience against urbanity. Rural areas represented an arena for very situational processes of negotiation between, on the one hand, administrative patterns and related social configurations, and, on the other hand, processes of social conformance to the very characteristics of a local specific rural environment, of adaptation to its peculiar habitus and religious customs, possibly involving gods whose competences directly mirrored a geophysical environment made of mountains, rivers, woods, etc.

The Department of Historical Science at the University of Málaga and the Institute of Historiography “Julio Caro Baroja” at the University of Carlos III of Madrid are organizing an international conference titled “Calling upon gods, offering bodies. Strategies of human-divine communication in the Roman Empire from individual experience to social reproduction”. Researchers of Ancient History, History of Religion, Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and other related fields are invited to present their research on this topic. The conference aims at analysing how self-experience of religious communication becomes a reflexive phenomenon reproduced in time and space to constitute a collectively shared narrative.

L’expérience érotique en Grèce ancienne
Au moment où Michel Foucault distinguait les aphrodisia grecs de la chair chrétienne et de la « bonne sexualité » contemporaine, plusieurs spécialistes de l’Antiquité, aux États-Unis et en France, se réunissaient pour mettre au jour l’ampleur des relations, des espaces et des pratiques poétiques et iconographiques placées sous le signe d’erôs. Presque trente ans plus tard, la traduction de l'ouvrage Before Sexuality. The Construction of Erotic Experience in the Ancient Greek World nous offre la réédition de ce dialogue transatlantique. Les tables rondes de la journée du 25 mai accueilleront les auteur-e-s, les éditeurs, des psychanalystes et des chercheur-e-s qui ont trouvé dans cet ouvrage des pistes pour leurs propres travaux, maintenant. Que nous réserve, au XXIe siècle, ce nouveau voyage en terre d’erôs ?

The singular nature of Egyptian images
3rd day of Egyptology studies devoted to the reading of images
Après avoir étudié la relation entre image et écriture puis les dénominations et modes de représentation, nous nous pencherons cette année sur les particularités de l'image égyptienne. De nombreuses représentations ainsi que leurs éléments constitutifs – scènes, personnages, animaux, objets, etc. – ne sont en effet pas reproduits selon les conventions qui régissent habituellement l'art égyptien. L'objectif de cette journée est non seulement d'apprendre à repérer ces particularités et à les définir mais aussi et surtout de comprendre leurs fonctions au sein du vocabulaire iconographique égyptien.

Quatrième colloque dans le cadre du Programme Le problème de la réappropriation par la philosophie des discours de savoir antérieurs (Colloque 1 : « La poésie archaïque comme discours de savoir », 28-29 novembre 2014 ; Colloque 2 : « La poésie dramatique comme discours de savoir », 21-22 mai 2015; Colloque 3: « Platon citateur : un exemple de réappropriation par la philosophie des discours de savoir antérieurs », 29-31 mars 2017). Faisant fond sur les résultats obtenus lors des trois colloques précédents (en cours de publication chez les Classiques Garnier), nous aurons à examiner les citations (directes ou indirectes) de Aristote non seulement aux poètes archaïques et classiques, mais également aux autres discours de savoir non philosophiques.

A multidisciplinary conference and exhibition examining the symbolism of the colour red across disciplines in the past and present
Le projet « Rouge : études diachroniques » (RED) ambitionne de documenter l’attachement à la couleur rouge dans les productions symboliques du passé à l’actuel. Le projet vise à rassembler différents spécialistes autour de cette question et d’engager le dialogue avec des spécialistes de la couleur: scientifiques (sciences humaines et sciences dures), artistes contemporains, conservateurs et producteurs de couleur. Pour cette table-ronde, la mobilisation croisée des compétences, des recherches et des créations des spécialistes de champs largement différents constitue l’un des principaux horizons susceptibles de faire progresser une réflexion autour de la couleur rouge et d’apporter une dynamique nouvelle dans la compréhension des productions symboliques artistiques du passé.

Nous souhaiterions réunir des contributions autour de nouvelles interrogations apportées par les études sur les sexualités, les regards portés dans les images et sur les images. L’idée qui nous anime n’est pas de publier des catalogues d’images autour d’une thématique, mais bien d’interroger la manière dont les images contribuent à la définition des sexualités. Le numéro s’adresse à toutes les périodes historiques s’ouvre à l’histoire de l’art, à l’anthropologie visuelle, et aux historien·ne·s des images. Une attention particulière sera portée aux propositions concernant sur l’art ancien, sur lequel les lacunes historiographiques sont plus importantes.

Dressing Divinely: clothed or naked deities an devotees
The XVII International Colloquium of the Association ARYS (Antiquity, Religions and Societies) is dedicated to the study of the links between religious identity and clothing within the framework of ancient societies and religions, from the perspective of the images either of the gods or of their devotees. Within the topic of religious clothing will be included the religious use of clothes and attributes, accesories, ornaments, body modifications such as mutilations or tattoos, hairstyles, nudity and, of course, the action itself of dressing or undressing, its conception and positive, neutral or negative consideration, or the act of assuming any of those human or divine complements, adornments, attributes or modifications of the body. We welcome the participation of consolidated as well as early-career specialists in the field of ancient history, archaeology, religious sciences, art history and historiography of religions.

Any proposal concerning one of the “recensions” of the Physiologus (in Greek as well as in the other ancient or medieval languages of diffusion – Latin, Armenian, Georgian, Arabic, Slavonic, Romanian ...) is welcome. The papers (in any European language) may relate to the medieval tradition and the avatars of this text / genre, and relate to philological, literary, cultural, naturalist, or iconographic aspects.

The spectacle of religion - individual commitment and community constructions
Les historiens de l’Antiquité ont admis le caractère profondément pluriel des pratiques religieuses qui sont articulées, en particulier, au politique, au culturel ou encore aux modèles éducatifs. Or le lien entre religion et spectacle, souvent évoqué dans les études sur les religions anciennes, n’a suscité à ce jour que peu d’études approfondies. Il s’agira pour le colloque de s’interroger sur les modalités de participation des acteurs du rituel en prenant en compte ce que nous pourrions appeler le caractère « spectaculaire » des célébrations religieuses.

Incense and religion in ancient societies
Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.

Le recrutement des ensembles funéraires antiques
Grâce aux efforts conjoints d’archéologues, d’anthropologues, d’historiens et d’épigraphistes, les avancées récentes de la recherche en archéologie funéraire permettent aujourd’hui une bien meilleure connaissance du recrutement des ensembles funéraires antiques, c’est-à-dire de leur composition en termes de sexe et d’âge, mais aussi de statut social et juridique des individus.A partir de différentes études de cas, l’objectif de cette journée d’étude est de proposer quelques pistes de réflexion sur les critères et les motivations de la sélection des individus dans les ensembles funéraires de la Méditerranée antique, à la fois d’un point de vueméthodologique et interprétatif.

According to ancient biological theories, nutrition is, along with reproduction, one of the functions of the soul shared by men, animals and plants. At the same time, however, eating habits are among the starting points on which differences between humans, animals and plants are culturally built. This means that a transversal biological praxis can be used as an anthropological device, in order to to fix and identify specific boundaries and thresholds, either symbolic or theoretical, between both animality and vegetality on the one hand, and zoosphere and anthroposphere on the other hand.
