Baptism and Baptisteries

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Christian Initiation from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages

On the occasion of this meeting dedicated to baptism and baptisteries, we intend to highlight the spatialization of baptismal rituals and their evolution between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, by comparing different geographical areas within the boundaries of the Roman Empire and its neighbouring regions. Through the dialogue between written sources and archaeology, we would like to investigate whether baptismal practices could assert regional or confessional Christian identities.

This workshop is devoted to the study of the ancient construction techniques in the Near East from the Roman period to the Early Islamic era and on the transmission and diffusion of these techniques in the Mediterranean basin.

The past and its legacy: terms and issues in the societies of the Roman and Late Antiquity

À partir du constat matériel de la pérennité ou de la disparition des espaces, des bâtiments, des images, des formules iconographiques, il s’agira de s’interroger sur les divers modes de transmissions du passé. De l’idéalisation à l’oubli en passant par l’accommodation, il s’agira d’éclairer les manifestations de continuité, d’altération voire de renoncement dans les utilisations de certaines formules iconographiques ou compositions architecturales, pour ne citer que deux exemples. En donnant la parole aux doctorants archéologues et historiens de l’art, cette journée sera l’occasion d’engager la réflexion sur les sens et les enjeux liés aux usages du passé dans les sociétés antiques à partir de recherches en cours.
