Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Christian Initiation from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages
On the occasion of this meeting dedicated to baptism and baptisteries, we intend to highlight the spatialization of baptismal rituals and their evolution between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, by comparing different geographical areas within the boundaries of the Roman Empire and its neighbouring regions. Through the dialogue between written sources and archaeology, we would like to investigate whether baptismal practices could assert regional or confessional Christian identities.

Arboresences and exegesis of the Bible from Antiquity to the present day
Né en 2015, le projet « Trames arborescentes » a pour vocation de favoriser, à travers des groupes de travail et des journées d’étude, la rencontre de chercheurs dont l’arbre et l’arborescence sont au centre ou en périphérie des travaux. Une journée d’étude spécialisée, consacrée à l’usage des trames arborescentes dans l’exégèse biblique, aura lieu le 6 février 2018.

Incense and religion in ancient societies
Although several studies have drawn attention to the role of incense as an ingredient in ritual and a means of communication between men and gods, there remains no comprehensive examination of the practical functions and cultural semantics of incense in the ancient world, whether as a purifying agent, a performative sign of a transcendent world, an olfactory signal to summon the deity, a placatory libation, or food for the gods. Moreover, recent archaeological research has provided evidence (alongside literary, epigraphic and iconographic evidence) that the physical origins and chemical constituents of incense are complex and diverse, as are their properties : resins, vegetable gums, spices, and a welter of aromatic products that could be exhibited and burned before ancient eyes and noses. These were components of a multi-sensory religious experience in which music, colourful costumes, lavish banquets and tactile encounters defined the ritualsensibilities of the community.

The Hungarian Historical Review
Hagiography and the material cult of the saints inform today a wide variety of historical research from philology and theology through historical anthropology and cultural history to narratology and art history. Approaches vary from the local and national (dynastic saints, state religion, patron saints of cities and countries) to the universal (saints as healers, helpers and intercessors). We invite papers to this special issue on saints related to Pannonia and Hungary who crossed the frontiers and either “worked abroad”, or their relics, cults, texts and images scattered all over Europe.

Religion and alimentary prohibitions: arche-zoology and literary sources
International conference as part of LABEX RESMED Religions in the Mediterranean
La confrontation des sources littéraires et des données archéologiques s'avère importante pour essayer de comprendre tout à la fois la mise en place des interdits alimentaires particuliers à une religion, les limites de la mise en pratique des interdits alimentaires et leur évolution dans le temps. Les interdits alimentaires et les restrictions sur la commensalité permettent à différents groupes religieux d’établir une frontière entre « eux » et « nous ». Il existe donc un corpus de textes normatifs appartenant aux droits religieux et civils interdisant la consommation d’aliments particuliers. Cet aspect a été souvent étudié pour le judaïsme ou l’islam, moins souvent pour les polythéismes, le zoroastrisme ou le christianisme. Nous espérons présenter la littérature normative et faire réfléchir sur les limites de sa mise en application, tout en s'appuyant sur l’archéozoologie qui peut fournir des données sur le décalage entre norme et pratique.

Ecclesiology and ancient theories of society
Ce séminaire organisé sous forme de six rencontres voudrait être un carrefour de réflexion sur l’ecclésiologie comme science ancienne de la société. Dans les pays occidentaux de culture chrétienne, le fait communautaire a d’abord relevé de la « communion » par laquelle les fidèles faisaient corps dans une unité considérée comme l’« économie » de Dieu : l’Église. Cette façon ancienne de faire société s’enrichit à partir du XIIIe siècle de la science politique tirée de l’enseignement d’Aristote, mais d’un Aristote christianisé par les théologiens scolastiques. C’est ce lourd héritage, objet de tensions multiples à la fin du Moyen Âge et à l’âge des Réformes, qui forme le socle de la pensée politique des modernes, aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, époque à laquelle commence à s’écrire la première histoire de la tradition sociologique.

La Casa de Velázquez et l’Institut archéologique allemand de Madrid organisent la septième édition de leur atelier de formation pour jeunes chercheurs du 17 au 21 juin 2013, à Madrid, coordonnée cette année par Bertrand Goffaux, Dirce Marzoli et Fedor Schlimbach. Les travaux porteront cette année sur le paysage religieux urbain et suburbain en Occident, entre le Ie et le VIe siècle ap. J.-C.
