Classicamente. Dialoghi Senesi sul Mondo Antico
The junior researchers and PhD students from the Anthropology of the ancient world curriculum of the PhD course in Classics and Archeology are promoting the fourth edition of the seminar cycle Classicamente. Dialoghi Senesi sul Mondo Antico. This year's edition will focus on the varied methodologies and hermeneutical perspectives which represent the scientific guidelines followed by scholars in anthropology of the ancient world ever since its development. It will also focus on those approaches that today contribute to a constant enrichment and renovation of this field of study. Our goal is to offer to all those who take part the chance to present their work, be it the result of long research or elements of a work in progress, in an enviroment open to discussion between different perspectives (anthropological, philological, historical, archeological, semiotic etc.).

Il/elle devra encadrer les travaux des membres de la section et toutesles activités de formation de la section antique et byzantine, favoriser les recherches des chercheurs associés dont les travaux contribuent aux programmes de l’établissement ainsi que la mise en œuvre de projets collectifs impliquant l’EFA et ses partenaires, superviser la Chronique des fouilles en ligne, procéder à des expertises de projets de publications. Il/elle poursuivra également ses recherches personnelles.

Textiles and Gender: Production to wardrobe from the Orient to the Mediterranean in Antiquity
Textiles and gender intertwine on many levels, from the transformation of raw materials into fabric at one end, to dress and garments, and the construction of identity at the other. The conference will examine the gender division of work in the production of textiles, as well as attitudes to dress and gender across the Near East and Mediterranean culture in antiquity (c. 3000 BCE-300CE), tracing both cross-cultural and culturally specific associations.

Iconography in situ: images, supports and contexts in “Magna Graecia”
Les scènes figurées sont nombreuses en Grande Grèce, notamment sur les vases, et leur étude ancienne, étroitement liée à l’histoire du collectionnisme. C’est cependant une approche d’histoire de l’art qui a prévalue depuis le XVIIIe siècle, et prime encore parfois dans le traitement de ces sources, dont le potentiel est pourtant important pour la connaissance des cultures anciennes de l’Italie du Sud. Le développement de l’archéologie contextuelle et les avancées récentes, permises par la reconstitution méticuleuse du parcours de ces objets archéologiques porteurs d’iconographie, sont le moteur d’une réévaluation des images produites en Grande Grèce, en rapport avec leurs supports et leurs contextes. Ces trois données sont rarement disponibles conjointement et encore peu considérées au sein d’une réflexion globale.

Ancient Greek and Roman painting and the Digital Humanities
When in 1921, A. Reinach published the Recueil des textes grecs et latins relatifs à la peinture ancienne (Recueil Milliet), it was mainly to make accessible these texts about painting and aesthetics to a broader audience. Since two years, a team gathered around the Perseus Digital Library and the Perseids Project (Tufts University) seek to revitalize the Recueil Milliet (an essential tool for historians of Greek and Roman Art) implementing it into a digitalized format (http://digmill.perseids.org/commentary). In relation to the work made, the proposed conference seek to question methodologies which combine Digital Humanities and scientific research, especially in the field of history of Greek and Roman art. But also, to put forward the relationship between textual sources and the most recent archaeological findings.

For the 80th anniversary of Paul Perdrizet's death, the University of Lorraine organises an international symposium on the life and work of the renowned archaeologist and art historian.All the different aspects of his biography will be discussed, from his early epigraphical and archaeological research in Greece, Macedonia and Cyprus, in the 1890's, to his Late Medieval Studies on the cult of saints in the 1930's, his works on greco-roman Egypt, but also his notable role in local politics and industry in Nancy and Strasburg.

Rubi Antiqua: from collectionism to archaeology - Ruvo di Puglia and Europe
Rubi antiqua est un programme de recherche qui propose de renouveler le regard porté sur l’archéologie et le collectionnisme franco-italien au XIXe siècle, à partir de l’exemple de Ruvo di Puglia, en Italie méridionale. Marquant l’aboutissement de quatre années de recherche, ayant confirmé le lien entre la petite ville italienne et Paris à travers le commerce d’antiques, cette rencontre conclusive a pour ambition de faire dialoguer chercheurs, universitaires et conservateurs de plusieurs pays. Seront abordés, sous différents angles, le phénomène du collectionnisme partant de Ruvo, la question des provenances archéologiques, celle des méthodes et des critères employés par les fouilles anciennes, à partir d’archives inédites et des nouvelles avancées de l’archéologie moderne.

Methods of interpreting ancient images - comparative perspectives

Si l’image est un document précieux pour l’étude des sociétés antiques, les méthodes déployées pour parvenir à son interprétation sont nombreuses et disparates selon les aires chrono-culturelles. Alors que l’iconographie du monde classique est le sujet de recherches abondantes – quoi qu’inégales quant aux supports envisagés –, d’autres périodes et d’autres régions, telles que l’Orient ancien, semblent dépourvues de tout positionnement méthodologique quant à l’appréhension des images. L’objectif de cette journée d'étude est de permettre une réflexion commune sur les méthodes d’interprétation de l’image dans l’Antiquité. Il s’agit avant tout de motiver des échanges autour des différents protocoles d’étude et cadres théoriques mobilisés pour l’étude de l’image.

Les 3 et 4 novembre 2016 a eu lieu la journée d'étude internationale et pluridisciplinaire « Les ruines résonnent encore de leurs pas : la circulation dans les monuments grecs (VIIe siècle-31 a.C.) ». Elle a réuni historiens, archéologues et historiens de l'art dont les communications ont suscité intérêt et nouveaux questionnements. Afin d'enrichir les thématiques abordées lors de cette rencontre et les compléter par des sujets connexes non traités, la publication des actes sera augmentée de nouveaux articles.

Workshop practices: terracotta and bronze casting
Alors que la question des ateliers devient de nos jours un thème récurrent dans la réflexion sur l’artisanat, le propos de cette journée d’étude s’attachera à questionner la relation entre les différentes pratiques des artisans, afin de décloisonner certaines de leurs activités. Si l’on sait depuis longtemps que sculpteurs et coroplathes devaient avoir partie liée par le biais du prototype et que ces derniers utilisaient des outils communs à ceux des potiers, ne serait-ce que par l’usage de l’argile et des fours, on a moins travaillé sur les rapports qui pouvaient exister entre coroplathes et bronziers : ceux-ci se rejoignaient nécessairement dans leurs pratiques, à certaines étapes d’élaboration de leurs œuvres, quand ils fabriquaient les prototypes, les empreintes, les moules et les modèles intermédiaires.

Water Management in the Mediterranean during the 1st Millennium BC
IIIe symposium international HYDRΩMED
The aim of the meeting is to compare the different modes of adaptation of the Ancient Mediterranean populations to the environmental resources, especially their hydric resources. In a climate marked by unequal distribution of water, the ancient societies, whether Phoenician-Punic, Greek or Etruscan, responded in different ways to the various situations, let alone the hydric crises which may have affected them. The meeting will associate systemic theoretical reflections as well as case studies on ancient sites, to outline the mutations and the permanencies, the possible technological transfers from one society to another. Here, as in other fields of human activity, we shall query the existence of an ancient Mediterranean koine around the knowledge and the technical practices, around the cultural and cultural traditions. The chronology considered runs from the 8th to the 1st century BC, i.e. before the diffusion of the Roman models and techniques.
