Religion of the Ancient Near East: New Developments (RANEND)
Among the Near Eastern research programs of interest to Ghent, ULille and UCLouvain universities, the study of religion in the Near East has been chosen as a central theme of a new cooperation project, as several teachers-researchers, doctoral and post-doctoral students are already involved in this field. in 2018, we will start with a masterclass on Hittite religion with Dr Alice Mouton (CNRS - UMR 8167), a well-known scholar of the Hittite world and a specialist of religion in ancient Anatolia, first step to renew the approaches and to develop a reflection of the importance of this subject in ancien Near Eastern societies. Other conferences on the theme of religion in the Ancient Near East and Egypt will be delivered on the same day by other scholars from England, France and Belgium.

2nd Egyptology study day devoted to the reading of images
Après avoir étudié la relation qui, dans l'art égyptien, unit l'image et l'écriture, la deuxième journée d'études consacrée à la lecture de l'image égyptienne portera cette année sur les dénominations et les modes de représentation, autant d'éléments qui permettent, entre autres, de déterminer la nature et la fonction des images reproduites dans les contextes sacrés que sont la tombe et le temple.

Le projet ERC MAP (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms) embrasse l'ensemble des épithètes divines attestées dans les inscriptions et les textes littéraires grecs et ouest-sémitiques entre 1000 av. et 400 de n. è. Grâce aux épithètes, les dieux se déclinent en une multitude d'aspects et dessinent des configurations qui demandent à être analysées. L’objectif de ce premier séminaire semestriel est d’élargir notre réflexion collective sur les noms des dieux et les stratégies de dénominations dans la fabrique du divin, en accueillant toutes les deux semaines, à Toulouse, deux invités venus de divers horizons thématiques – études grecques et sémitiques, mais aussi monde biblique, égyptologie, anthropologie – dans un atelier de travail au cours duquel les intervenants apporteront des idées issues de leurs domaines de recherche, des pistes de documentation, des questionnements méthodologiques à explorer, des cas d’étude stimulants.

Textos das pirâmides. Textos dos sarcófagos
A produção de literatura funerária teve lugar em todos os períodos da história do antigo Egipto, sendo constituída sobretudo por textos inscritos nas paredes dos túmulos ou gravados em objectos tumulares, como sarcófagos e papiros. Estes textos, que representam o género de corpus mais amplo de todos os géneros do antigo Egipto, funcionariam como auxiliares para o morto atingir o Além na companhia dos deuses.

Ritual practices in Ancient Sudan: gestures, words and furnishings
In the continuity of two workshops set at University Paris-Sorbonne - Paris in 2011 and at University Charles-de-Gaulle - Lille 3 in 2013, this colloquium will gather the young French-speaking actors of archaeology in Sudan, as well as senior researchers, for two days of discussion around a common theme. In this case, the participants are invited to exchange on the "Ritual practices in Ancient Sudan".

Meet the New Gods, Same as the Old Gods? Formulary, Ritual and Status in Hellenistic Ruler Cult
Panel to be held at the Eighth Celtic Conference in Classics
Despite recent and widespread interest in Greek hero and ruler cult, evaluating the processes that lead to the bestowal of cultic honours on Hellenistic sovereigns still remains a controversial matter. Political readings of such honours within the framework of contemporary international diplomacy and euergetic discourse have picked up on polarities widely discussed by previous bibliography, such as "dynastic vs. civic", "living vs. posthumous", etc. Yet the main focus is still limited to a "top-down" perspective, which leaves aside the fascinating dialectics between "private" and "public", or to perhaps phrase this more accurately, between "institutional" and "non-institutional" actors.

L’homme confronté à des catastrophes (naturelles, militaires, individuelles, etc.) se pose la question de la raison de celles-ci. Dans l’Antiquité (et dans certains contextes encore aujourd’hui) on expliquait les différents cataclysmes par la colère d’un ou de plusieurs dieux. On imaginait que Marduk avait quitté sa ville ou que Yhwh avait livré Jérusalem aux mains des babyloniens pour punir son peuple. Le mythe du Déluge largement répandu dans le Proche-Orient ancien contient également une réflexion sur la fragilité de la création et le caractère imprévisible des dieux. Mais aussi dans le monde gréco-romain et égyptien on s’interroge sur les colères divines et les moyens de les calmer. Si les dieux se mettent fréquemment en colère, peuvent-ils aussi se repentir de leur irritation. Sur cette question, les systèmes religieux du monde méditerranéen et du Proche-Orient ancien n’ont pas tous la même vision.

Individual Rites of Passage in the Ancient Near East
Le colloque international « Vivre, grandir et mourir dans l'Antiquité » réunira, les 23, 24, et 25 novembre 2011 à la MISHA de Strasbourg de nombreux spécialistes des rites de passage du Proche-Orient (monde cunéiforme et Egypte) et du monde gréco-romain. Au croisement de la philologie, de l'archéologie, de l'histoire des religions et de l'anthropologie sociale, il cherchera à définir certaines des modalités de la « fabrication » de l'humain.
