Ces journées d’études entendent interroger la participation des textiles – réels ou fictifs, matériels, représentés ou feints – dans la manifestation du sacré, compris dans une acceptation large au-delà de la sphère strictement religieuse. La diversité de leurs formes, la pluralité de leurs fonctions et leur potentiel métaphorique seront au cœur de la réflexion.

Call for papers - Representation
The essential locus of the workshop has to be enquired into. How is a workshop organized? Which role is given to each of its members? From preparing colours to realising some parts of the painting, from building a mould to pouring liquid bronze into this casting mould, or from drawing a project to managing a work site, which evolution and which autonomy can students benefit from regarding their masters? Vasari has revealed a progressive vision of Art History, which still prevails in the discipline: students are inevitably ending up overstepping their master (Michelangelo and Ghirlandaio) or outshining their father (Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Pietro Bernini in the 17th century). But what about those who were not taken on and those who remained unskilled workers in their lifetime? Was their role really secondary? The ways and means of these artists’ dependence and emancipation regarding their masters, their model, or their technique has to be addressed.

Ce congrès a pour objectif d’analyser la production textile médiévale à travers une approche transversale, en se concentrant sur la Méditerranée en tant qu’espace de confluences qui ont donné lieu à une production variée avec des liens communs. La rencontre propose de revoir les hypothèses sur la production, la fonctionnalité et la circulation de ces objets de luxe, le collectionnisme et les enjeux de la conservation de ces œuvres.

State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces in Europe (14th-16th c.)

From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, European monarchies saw a gradual centralisation of power. This was accompanied by the dissemination of political ideas that contributed to the making of a new image of the prince, which relied on visual instruments to assert and construct the prince’s sovereign power. Royal and princely residences with their designated state-rooms were at the centre of this phenomenon. Their decors, particularly during ceremonies, reflected political interests and ambitions that were essential to the image of the prince. By placing a particular emphasis on the decor of those state-rooms, this workshop aims to increase our insights into the relations between the architecture, decoration, and rituals of monarchical power in state-rooms from the late middle ages to the beginning of the early modern period.

Funerary sculpture: from creation to Musealization
The Instituto de Estudos Medievais (IEM) and the Instituto de História da Arte (IHA) of the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCSH/NOVA), along with the Centro de Investigação e Estudos em Belas Artes (CIEBA) of the Faculdade de Belas Artes of the Universidade de Lisboa, and in collaboration with the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon, are organizing the International Congress “Souls of Stone. Funerary Sculpture: from the Creation to the Musealization”. Historians, museologists, restorers and all the researchers in general working on the topic are invited to submit proposals

Meta-figurative thought - Setting images in Antiquity and the Middle Ages
La question de la « pensée méta-figurative » explore la capacité réflexive des objets visuels : elle se fonde d’abord sur le repérage de la multiplicité des procédés d’enchâssements à l’œuvre dans les images, puis sur leur interprétation dans ce qu’ils révèlent à la fois du processus de création chez l’artiste, du pouvoir et de l’efficacité qu’ils activent dans les œuvres elles-mêmes, suivant une démarche soucieuse de rendre compte tout à la fois des enjeux esthétiques, historiques et anthropologiques dont elles sont porteuses.

La voix, composante omniprésente et pourtant si difficile à saisir de la réalité médiévale, a été retenue comme thématique pour la vingt-sixième édition du colloque d’Issoire qui se déroulera les 21 et 22 octobre 2016. Longtemps réservée aux musicologues, l’étude de la voix concerne en réalité tous les champs de la médiévistique. Si elle reste inaccessible dans son expérience, la voix des hommes et des femmes du Moyen Âge résonne encore dans les sources iconographiques, épigraphiques, littéraires et liturgiques, mais aussi dans la documentation diplomatique et les textes narratifs. Il s’agit d’aborder les empreintes de l’oralité dans les productions – textuelles et matérielles, quotidiennes et artistiques – de l’époque romane.

The novel beyond lines. Narrative and intermediality in Italian culture

Que devient un récit quand il quitte le livre pour vivre dans d’autres pratiques médiatiques ? Si l’intertextualité permet d’analyser des phénomènes touchant des textes écrits, de façon complémentaire, l'intermédialité concerne l'ensemble des recherches sur toutes les formes de communication entre les arts. Cette journée consacrée au romanesque et à l’intermédialité portera donc sur les cas où le récit s’échappe des lignes, et va investir d’autres médias. Quelles sont les modalités de ces circulations intermédiatiques ? Des travaux portant sur la relation entre romanesque et théâtre, arts visuels, musique, cinéma, chanson ou encore bande-dessinée seront présentés, avec un accent sur l’hybridation des formes et des langages. On s’intéressera bien sûr aux adaptations, mais aussi aux réécritures et aux détournements.

Heraldry in the Medieval City – The Case of Italy in the European Context
A visitor passing through Italy is surprised by the abundance of coats of arms that still decorate the palaces and public monuments of its cities. Relatively undisturbed by the tides of history that destroyed a lot of Europe's heraldic heritage, in the Italian cities this heritage is still alive and well. While the development of heraldic signs occasionally caught the eye of historians and art historians, they have never done justice to the multitude and diversity of the existing sources. Recently, however, research has taken an interest in the subject with renewed vigour and approaches, especially in the case of Italy. The aim of this conference is to establish the current state of research and to advance the subject by linking more closely the history of heraldic communication and the history of cities. To do so, the Italian example shall be put into a European perspective.

Images and Liturgy in Portugal in the Middle Age
The seminar Images and Liturgy in Portugal in the Middle Age, organized by the CEAACP Multidisciplinary Group Study in Arts (University of Coimbra), in partnership with the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists / Carmo Archaeological Museum, is part of the set of project initiatives of Carla Varela Fernandes’ Postdoc (Sculptures of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in collections of Portuguese museums. An imperative approach to a broader knowledge of the scientific reality). It aims the presentation and discussion of recent studies and reflections on works of Romanic and Gothic art existing in Portugal. It is intended to address the medieval images as part of the liturgical rituals and the buildings they were designed for. On the other hand, we’ll try to provide advances in the knowledge on the means as an iconographic innovation or aesthetic generated at a given location "moves" and appears in other geographies, serving similar purposes.

Courts and Courtly Cultures in Early Modern Italy and Europe
Models and Languages
The conference will focus on the topic of court culture in Lombardy and North Italy, within the conceptual framework of the SNF Sinergia project: Constructing identity: visual, spatial, and literary cultures in Lombardy, 14th to 16th centuries. This interdisciplinary project, which includes five research unities in the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, and EPFL at Lausanne, works on Visconti and Sforza ages, when Lombardy, one of the most important European regions, established itself as a distinct political and cultural entity. It has been an exemplary case of the construction of a cultural identity, whose repercussions still resonate in present-day Italy. As a part of a potent political project, it has been sustained by complex mechanisms of self-representation and the imposition of a prestige taste. The conference will conclude the research of the Sinergia project discussing its results in a wider historical, literary, architectural and artistic context and verifying its methodological approaches at the light of multiple points of view.

Ces septièmes journées mettront l’accent sur les arts somptuaires du Moyen Âge hispanique en considérant plusieurs perspectives : le rôle des productions somptuaires dans la culture médiévale et leur contribution à l’imaginaire symbolique ; l’usage des objets dans le rituel et dans l’expression du pouvoir ; la valeur des matériaux et de la diversité technique dans la création artistique ; la circulation des œuvres et le phénomène du collectionnisme ; la contribution de muséologie à la mise en valeur des objets dans des nouveaux cadres d’exposition et à la création de nouveaux discours.

In Spring 2014, Art-Hist will organize two sessions at Kalamazoo International Congress on Medieval Studies (8-11 May). Art-Hist sessions this year will deal with "White, Empty, Silent in Medieval Artistic Creation". The committee offered us two sessions: "I. Paleographical Aspects"; "II. From Sonorous White to Visual White: Silence and Its Representation". We are expecting proposals dealing with representation of silence in Medieval art and graphic practices. The deadline for the paper proposal is September 15th.
