Image, Cartography, Knowledge of the City after the Council of Trent ("In_bo" vol. 12, no. 16)
Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

Imaginary places, real territories
Territorial imagery and the creation of a Dutch identity (1579-1702)
This two-day symposium aims to shed light on the ways in which Dutch depictions of national and transnational territories participated in the formulation of a shared identity. Multidisciplinary discussions will allow us to examine the terms of territorial imagery in Dutch visual culture, and their links with the formation of a national myth in the Early Modern Dutch Republic.

Construction Techniques and Writings on Architecture in Renaissance and Early Modern Europe
Thematic issue of the journal Opus Incertum (Florence University Press)
The 2020 issue of the open access journal Opus Incertum (Florence University Press) aims to examine, through selected case studies, the complex relationship between construction practices and architectural writings in Renaissance and early modern Europe. Situated at the crossroads of several disciplines (architectural history, history of science and technology, history of literature), the subject can be approached from different perspectives. To begin with, confrontations of texts on construction techniques with the material realities of extant buildings may reveal, for specific contexts, to what extent these texts operated as vehicles for the transmission of technical know-how, and how much weight they gave to topoi borrowed from ancient authors.

France and Italy (17th-18th centuries)
L’appel à communication a pour objectif de réunir des études portant sur des édifices parlants, c’est-à-dire documentés par des textes et des images évoquant directement ou indirectement les discussions dont ils ont fait l’objet lors de leur construction, leur entretien ou même leur démolition. Le contexte administratif de ces discussions et le profil des acteurs qui y participent sera restitué afin de comprendre sur quoi se fonde l’expertise de ceux qui, architectes ou non, parlent d’architecture. Une présentation générale du thème de l’expertise en architecture, centrée sur Paris et sur Venise, sera assurée par les organisateurs du colloque. Nous recherchons des études de cas localisées dans les principales provinces du royaume de France et les différents états italiens au cours des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.

Decor and architecture - between the union and separation of the arts (16th-17th centuries)
Le décor à la période moderne est considéré comme l’une des parties constitutives de l’architecture. Grâce à lui, celle-ci se distingue de la simple maçonnerie et peut revendiquer une forme d’excellence. Dans une telle perspective, le décor est une condition essentielle à l’architecture et non pas un élément marginal. Or dans l’historiographie, décor et architecture sont souvent étudiés de manière séparée, ce qui institue de fait une rupture entre ces deux champs, susceptible de biaiser notre compréhension de la production artistique. Le présent colloque ambitionne d’interroger la manière dont les rapports entre décor et architecture ont été pensés et pratiqués dans l’Europe des XVIe et XVIIe siècles.

Décor and Architecture (17th-18th centuries): Between Adherence and Autonomy
During the Early Modern Period, décor was considered to be one of the most fundamental elements of architecture. Thanks to décor, architecture could elevate itself beyond simple masonry and claim a superior status. Décor was thus defined as a necessary prerequisite for architecture, rather than a marginal component. However, despite its privileged status, many authors mistrusted it, fearing the harmful effect which an uncontrollable proliferation of ornament would surely have on architecture. This conference aims to question how the relations between décor and architecture were defined and implemented in Europe in the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries.

The life and survival of decorative motifs (1550-1789)
Cette journée d'études doctorales est l'occasion d'interroger la survivance de certains motifs dans l'œuvre d'art de la période moderne, de 1550 à 1789. En effet, un certain nombre de motifs iconographiques récurrents dans l’œuvre posent question. Il s'agit de définir le motif, quelque soit sa nature, de son origine jusqu'à ses usages les plus tardifs, afin de proposer une réflexion sur le statut et la fonction du motif ainsi que sur ses modalités de réception et les modifications d'interprétation au cours du temps.

Ce statut privilégié n’empêche cependant pas les commentateurs de s’en méfier : ils craignent la prolifération incontrôlée de l’ornement, qu’ils jugent nuisible à l’architecture. Le présent colloque ambitionne d’interroger la manière dont les rapports entre décor et architecture ont été pensés et pratiqués dans l’Europe des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.

Heraldry in Medieval and Early Modern State-Rooms
Towards a Typology of Heraldic Programmes in Spaces of Self-Representation
Heraldry was an ubiquitous element of state-rooms. Whether in palaces of kings and princes, castles of noblemen, residences of patricians, city halls or in cathedral chapters, heraldic display was a crucial element in the visual programme of these spaces. Despite its omnipresence, however, heraldic display in state-rooms remains largely understudied so far. This workshop aims to explore these heraldic programmes in state-rooms in medieval and early modern Europe and to suggest an initial typology of this phenomenon.

Building techniques in writings on architecture between Italy, France and the Low Countries
Les techniques constructives dans les écrits d’architecture entre Italie, France et anciens Pays-Bas
This conference focuses on the connection between architectural theory and construction techniques. The first part deals with the analysis of technical descriptions, their relationship with building practice, their rhetorical value, and their international circulation and adaptation. It comprises case studies from Italy, France, and the Low Countries. The second part approaches the same problem in a comparative perspective and takes the form of round-table discussions structured around three themes: the relationship between technical writings and construction practices, the literary aspects of technical digressions, and the translation and adaptation of Italian treatises.

The current state of research in castel archaeology in the Poitou-Charentes and Loire regions
L'équipe de castellologie du CESCM de Poitiers (UMR 7302 du CNRS) organise deux séminaires annuels depuis près de quinze ans, l'un thématique, l'autre dédié aux actualités de la recherche et travaux en cours. Le jeudi 27 mars prochain, un séminaire sur l'actualité de la recherche en archéologie castrale en région Poitou-Charentes et Pays de la Loire est organisé à l'université de Poitiers sous la direction de Nicolas Prouteau (membre associé CESCM) et Didier Delhoume (SRA Poitou-Charentes).

Appel à contributions pour une journée d’étude organisée par le Centre d’histoire des Techniques et de l’Environnement (CDHTE, CNAM) et l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA) : traduire l’architecture (XVIIe-XIXe siècle). Cette journée d’étude organisée le 15 décembre 2011 par le CDHTE et l’INHA fait suite à une première journée sur le même thème qui s’est tenue le 13 novembre 2010. Une troisième journée est prévue en septembre 2012. Ce cycle donnera lieu à une publication. Call for Papers: Translating Architecture (XVIIth-XIXth centuries). A conference organised by the Centre for the History of Techniques and the Environment (CDHTE, CNAM) and the National Institute of Art History (INHA). This conference, organised for December 15 2011 by the CDHTE and the INHA, follows an initial conference on the same theme that took place on November 13 2010. A third conference is planned for September 2012. The conference series will lead to a publication. -

Architecture et décor monumental des monastères bénédictins de la fin du Moyen Âge au début de l'époque moderne en Europe, XIIIe-XVIIe siècles
Le CERCOR (CNRS, UMR 8584) et le Centre André Chastel (UMR 8150) s'associent pour organiser une journée d'études consacrée à la production artistique monumentale des monastères bénédictins de la fin du Moyen Âge au début de l'époque moderne (XIIIe-XVIIe siècles). Durant cette période qui a jusqu'à présent peu retenu l'intérêt des chercheurs de nombreux chantiers furent pourtant lancés dans les monastères bénédictins tant en France qu'en Europe. Ce sont ces chantiers qui feront l'objet des communications de la journée. -

Philippe de la Hire: between architecture and sciences
Philippe de la Hire (1640-1718) fut membre de l'Académie royale des sciences et s'intéressa aux sciences les plus variées (géomètrie, hydraulique, gnomonique, mécanique, astronomie...). Il fut aussi un peintre reconnu, inscrit à l'Académie de Saint-Luc et devint professeur à l'Académie royale d'architecture. Un colloque pluridisciplinaire réunissant historiens des sciences, historiens de l'art et historiens de l'architecture permettra de mieux mesurer l'importance de cet homme aux savoirs multiples tant en étudiant les aspects de sa carrière qu'en le confrontant à ses contemporains.
