Founding, selecting, defending: how to make democracy survive (1918-1960)?
Ce colloque international s’inscrit dans le projet de formation-recherche « Quelle démocratie ? La réflexion sur la crise, la modernisation et les limites de la démocratie en Allemagne, en France, en Angleterre et en Europe centrale entre 1919 et 1939 ». Ce projet pluridisciplinaire propose de revenir sur les réflexions autour de la démocratie de l’entre-deux-guerres en s’intéressant particulièrement aux discours critiques et aux projets de réformes issus du camp démocratique au sens large. Sa démarche consiste à insérer ces discours dans leurs contextes historique, idéologique et socio-culturel, tout en s’intéressant également à leur impact sur la vie politique et sociale de l’époque. Dans la logique de ce projet, ce colloque portera sur la question de l’enracinement démocratique, c’est-à-dire sur la question des moyens à mettre en œuvre pour faire survivre une démocratie en milieu (potentiellement) hostile.

Final Conference of the ValEUR research project
The conference addresses the role, effects and meanings of values at the crossroads of politics, culture, market and law. It documents the circulation and shaping of values between the different spheres of the European multi-level governance (local, national, supranational, transnational). It investigates the EU as a container of values politics as well as its interactions with external entities (Council of Europe, UN, rest of the world). A secondary purpose is to map the research using values as an exploratory framework of wider transformations of politics, policies and polities in Europe. Leaders of scientific projects having developed such agendas in recent years figure among the contributors.

This conference aims at rethinking the legacy of 1989 in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) through the prism of its ongoing contestations, with a focus on the current trends and deliberate political efforts that challenge the major achievements of Velvet Revolutions as well as the outcomes of the collapse of the Iron Curtain. 1989 launched a process that continues to this day. Three decades of transformations, crises and setbacks have noticeably changed the shape of Central and Eastern European societies.

Cartographies of Southeast Europe
The Association international d’études du sud-est européen is happy to invite you to the 12th Congress of South-East European Studies, taking place in Bucharest, from the 2nd to the 7th of September 2019. One of the conference panels, organized by Robert Born (Leipzig) and Marian Coman (Bucharest), is dedicated to the cartographic history of south-eastern Europe. Proposals for individual papers are welcome on various aspects of the history of south-eastern Europe cartography, from the Ottoman period to the post-communist era. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Renaissance and Early Modern maps of the Ottoman Empire, Enlightenment cartographies of Eastern Europe, the birth of national cartography, war and peace cartographies, historical and propaganda maps, national and local surveys, Cold War cartographies.

Criticisms of democracy, authoritarianism and populism in Europe
Continuities and disruptions from the inter-war period until today
Facing the feeling of »crisis« of democracy arising in recent years and symbolized by the rise of populist movements, there is a recurrent comparison with the inter-war situation in today’s political debate in many European countries. Is this comparison relevant to understand the specific democratic practices during both periods? Building on this question, the workshop serves as kick-off for the research program Which democracy/democracies? Reflections on the crisis, modernization and limits of democracy in Germany, France, England and Central Europe between 1919 and 1939 supported by the Centre interdisciplinaire d’études et de recherches sur l’Allemagne (CIERA).

The European actors of the "People's spring" 1848
170th anniversary international conference
Après le colloque du cent cinquantième anniversaire de 1848 organisé par la Société de 1848 et des révolutions du XIXe siècle qui a marqué un important jalon historiographique, il a paru important, exactement vingt ans plus tard, de porter un nouveau regard sur cet événement majeur du XIXe siècle, et cela en répondant d’abord au souhait maintes fois formulé par Maurice Agulhon d’en mieux connaître les acteurs, au moment précis où le Dictionnaire des dirigeants français de 1848 du Centre d’histoire du XIXe siècle de Sorbonne Université et de Panthéon-Sorbonne, publié sous son patronage, constitue une nouvelle étape qui permet d’aller plus loin ; mais il s’agit aussi d’élargir la focale pour s’intéresser cette fois à l’ensemble du printemps des peuples. La question centrale de ces journées est ainsi : Qu’est-ce qu’être un acteur du printemps des peuples 1848 ?

À l’occasion du centenaire des Révolutions russes de février et d’octobre 1917, cette journée d'études propose de nouveaux regards sur les « événements de Russie » à partir de nouvelles sources et des travaux récents, s’inscrivant dans une double temporalité, celle, très courte, de l’année 1917 et celle, plus longue, de l’immédiat après-guerre, et dans un double espace territorial, celui des territoires nationaux de la France et de la Russie et celui, plus vaste et plus imprécis, de l'ancien espace de l'Empire tsariste et de ses nationalités.

Populism in Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century
Since the 1990s, several political movements qualified as “populist” have emerged in Central and Eastern Europe, drawing the attention of political scientists. If we want to understand why these movements exercise such attraction and why they are so relentless in this space, it is necessary to cross the study of current politics with the analysis of long term developments. Indeed, since the 19th century, Central and Eastern Europe has known several movements and political parties that have called themselves or have been labelled as “populist”. In this sense, the long-term approach allows considering the similarities and the differences, according to different contexts and periods, and identifying the reasons and the mechanisms of action of these movements. At last, this historical approach helps to consider the specificity - if there is any specificity - of these movements in Central and Eastern Europe and to evaluate their impact on political cultures of the region.

An exceptional contribution to the legal protection of human rights
En 2016-2017 l’Autriche et la Hongrie fêtent le 150e anniversaire du compromis constitutionnel de 1866-67. La Constitution adoptée à l’époque a créé un cadre pour un développement rapide de la monarchie constitutionnelle et la construction de l’État de droit. Les premières cours modernes pour la protection des droits fondamentaux (Reichsgericht, Verwaltungsgerichtshof) ont été créées. Vienne et Budapest se sont alors retrouvées dans une situation exceptionnelle. Pour rendre hommage à tous ceux qui ont contribué à cet essor exceptionnel du droit moderne, il est proposé d’organiser un colloque pluridisciplinaire (droit public, histoire du droit, théorie du droit, droit comparé, droits de l’Homme) à Strasbourg.

The Power of non-powers and perspectives on the economic, social and political aspects of European Security Strategy in the early Cold War
What are the historical roots of views of European defense and Europe's role in Western defence? How did the early European Integration movement perceive American involvement in the development of a common security strategy? This conference will investigate these and other related questions by re-examining the early cold war US/European relationship and the role that early Cold War period developments played in the European Integration Movement. In so doing, this conference will also showcase findings which can contribute to the unification of Cold War and European Integration historiographies.

Dans le prolongement des deux années précédentes, dans une approche résolument large, le séminaire portera sur les différents enjeux – sociaux, politiques, économiques – qu'ont représenté la terre, le territoire et l'espace dans le Sud-Est européen. De la question agraire, aux évolutions des représentations et pratiques spatiales, en passant par la construction des maillages territoriaux, on tentera de cerner les diverses facettes de ces enjeux depuis le début du XIXe siècle jusqu'à nos jours.

Ever since its signing 40 years ago, the Helsinki Final Act has been at the heart of political and historical controversies. While at the time some saw it as an instrument designed to preserve the European status quo, today it is widely perceived as a major contribution to the end of the Cold War and the disappearance of the Soviet bloc. Twenty five years after the end of the Cold War, this conference will seek to evaluate the reality of this interaction between diplomacies and societies during and after the Helsinki conference.

Après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et l’effondrement des grands empires coloniaux, la seconde moitié du XXe siècle a vu la multiplication de régimes socialistes-autoritaires fondés sur la domination d’un parti unique se revendiquant du socialisme et administrant une économie largement étatisée ou collectivisée, plus ou moins rapidement suivie de leur disparition. L'école d'été permettra d’interroger dans une perspective comparative et interdisciplinaire des périodes nommées, selon les contextes, « transition », « libéralisation », « démocratisation », « dégel », « déstalinisation » ou « désoviétisation ». Une attention particulière sera accordée aux héritages (in-)visibles, persistances, résistances et formes de réaction qui ont émaillé ces « sorties ». L'école d'été permettra à de jeunes chercheurs spécialistes d’aires géographiques diverses de se familiariser avec les archives soviétiques.

Un programme de trente conférences en histoire, histoire de l'art et débats géopolitiques soutenu par l'Institut de France dans le cadre de la saison « France-Russie 2012, langues et littérature ». Cette manifestation se tiendra les 1er et 2 juin 2012 au centre Malsherbes-Sorbonne. L'Association des historiens organise lors de ces journées le Salon européen du livre d'histoire à l'issu duquel sera remis le Prix du livre d'histoire de l'Europe. -
