Les chrétiens européens face à leurs passés embarrassants (du Moyen Âge à nos jours)
Les mémoires collectives semblent se focaliser avant tout sur des événements perçus de manière positive par les groupes porteurs de mémoire, en particulier dans le cadre des communautés chrétiennes. Témoignant de l’accomplissement d’un plan providentiel ou de la fidélité de croyants envers Dieu en dépit des difficultés, les faits mémorisés sont généralement honorables. Pour autant, certains actes commis par des chrétiens peuvent embarrasser leurs coreligionnaires des années ou des siècles plus tard. Cette journée d’étude, centrée sur le christianisme en Europe (et ses prolongements coloniaux), vise à explorer ces mémoires honteuses dans la longue durée, du Moyen Âge à nos jours.

Advances and challenges of NLP (Natural Language Processing) for african languages
How far have we come?
This workshop will bring together NTeALan’s large community of members living in Cameroon and abroad, invited researchers, partners and other members of the scientific community. This workshop aims at bringing together professionals, researchers and experts in African languages and Natural Language Processing (NLP), whose research work focuses on machine learning techniques and electronic lexicography applied to NLP and language pedagogy/didactics. We will also discuss the main challenges that arise in this context for the constitution of corpora in African languages. We will define possible directions for future progress.

Artistic, Digital, and Political Creation in English-Speaking African Countries
Africa 2020
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 3rd July 2018 in Lagos that a Special Season would be organized in France, from June to December 2020, to mark a renewed partnership with Africa, a “varied, strong and diverse continent that will play a part in our shared future”. Even if this cultural focus cannot be abstracted from a broader geopolitical agenda marred by controversial presidential declarations, it nevertheless has the potential to offer a somewhat different coverage of the continent. One can only hope that it avoids the temptation to officially “curate into being” “exceptional” artists (Dovey), tapping into the all-too-familiar image of Africa as “the supreme receptacle of the West’s obsession with, and circular discourse about, the facts of ‘absence,’ ‘lack,’ and ‘non-being,’ of identity and difference” (Mbembe).

Africa 2020: Artistic, digital, and political creation in english-speaking African countries
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on 3rd July 2018 in Lagos that a Special Season would be organized in France, from June to December 2020, to mark a renewed partnership with Africa, a “varied, strong and diverse continent that will play a part in our shared future”. The peer-reviewed journal of Aix-Marseille Université research centre on Anglophone Studies (LERMA), E-rea, has decided to seize the opportunity of Africa 2020 to dedicate a special issue to contemporary artistic, digital, and political creation in English-speaking African countries. Heeding Kenyan political analyst Nanjala Nyabola’s advice to eschew the too reductive ‘Africa rising’ and ‘Africa failing’ narratives in favour of ‘Africa being’ stories, this special issue wishes to focus on “stories reflecting the ambivalence, complexity, challenges and opportunities of African societ[ies] in an increasingly connected world”.

New technology-based metamorphosis in Japan
In Japan, the kyara-ka phenomenon, ‘transforming into a character’ (Aihara Hiroyuki, 2007) is now giving birth to what Nozawa Shunsuke (2013) calls ‘an emerging art of self–fashioning.’ Based on elaborate disguise techniques, the kyara-ka phenomenon covers a variety of communication strategies and practices: cosplay, kigurumi, Vtubing, utaloid voice banks, use of voice-image filters to upload videos where humans look like characters… Exploring all the aspects of this ‘thingification of humans’, the conference will reflect on how and why a growing number of people market themselves as characters. The conference goal is to address the complexity of issues raised by these voluntary and, perhaps, ironical acts of obliteration. What is the profile of men and women who transform themselves into computer-graphic creatures? How do they deal with being loved only through their digital alter-ego? What little or grand narratives are being produced alongside? Can we still deal with the phenomenon in terms of authenticity (original) versus artificiality (copy)? What negotiations or refusals underly the use of characters as social masks?

Ce séminaire se propose un dialogue interdisciplinaire sur les théories, les pratiques et les savoirs décoloniaux d’Abya Yala (nom donné par le peuple autochtone Kuna au continent américain) en tant qu’idées, cosmogonies, expériences, discours et pratiques. L’idée du séminaire part du constat que les études décoloniales – champ de recherche développé dans les Amériques depuis les années 1990 – est mal connu en France alors même que le qualificatif « décolonial » se diffuse dans les espaces militants ainsi que dans la presse généraliste.

Ce colloque international et interdisciplinaire aimerait s’intéresser à la pluralité des écritures produites autour de l’histoire du conflit israélo-palestinien et à la manière dont la littérature, les arts vivants, le cinéma ont apporté une mise en récit complémentaire et parallèle à celle des recherches en sciences sociales. Sur un terrain hautement conflictuel où chaque parole, chaque mot sont analysés et soupesés, l’écriture littéraire et poétique, le théâtre mais également les productions audio-visuelles sont autant de ressources et d’outils que des acteurs ont mobilisé pour dire, donner à connaître les histoires personnelles et collectives de cet affrontement.

Depuis 2016, la B.N.U. et le réseau national « Connaissance de l’Europe médiane » (« Groupement de recherche » n°3607 du C.N.R.S.), appuyés sur l’équipe de recherche E.A. 3400 (faculté des Sciences historiques de l’université de Strasbourg), contribuent à faire mieux connaître l’Europe médiane en Alsace. Dans cet espace entre Allemagne et Russie (qui comprend des collections de rang mondial), l’art a participé et participe encore à des débats brûlants : rapport entre images et religion, croisement entre l’Orient et l’Occident… En dialogue avec leurs collègues étrangers, les chercheurs de l’université présenteront leurs travaux récents allant de la Bohême médiévale aux rivages de Bulgarie, en passant par l’art islamique à Vienne, dans une manifestation ouverte au public.

Single-author books devoted to any aspect of the visual arts of the United States and published in the three previous calendar years are eligible. To nominate a book, send a one-page letter explaining the work’s significance to the field of American art history and discussing the quality of the author’s scholarship and methodology. Nominations by authors or publishers for their own books will not be considered.

This conference is an opportunity to pay tribute to Maurice Sixto, for his significant lodyans. The year 2019 is indeed the centenary of birth of this master of the spoken word, born in May 1919, and the 35thanniversary of his passing, which occurred in May 1984. The contemporaneous legacy of Maurice Sixto encompasses various categories of lodyanseurs, among whom former cultural colleagues, talented impersonators, original interpreters and contemporaneous storytellers who, directly or indirectly, recognize themselves through the influence of the master. This event will be the occasion to discuss the multidimensional, psycho-sociological, didactic and aesthetic value of Sixto’s work.

First Biennial International Conference on Eugenio Montale
Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1975, Eugenio Montale (1896-1981) spent thirty-three years of his life in Milan (more than a third of his entire existence), from 1948, when at the age of fifty-two he was taken on by “Corriere della Sera”, until his death in a Milanese hospital at the age of eighty-five. During this protracted residency in Milan, Montale published all his major poetic collections except Ossi di seppia and Le occasioni.

IXème journée d’études nord-africaines
Les tribus africaines sont aujourd’hui pensées moins comme un groupe unitaire en opposition aux Romains que comme une réalité complexe, protéiforme, saisissable dans un cadre souple qui tient compte des découpages sociaux-économiques comme du rôle des sociétés provinciales dans l’intégration des élites tribales. Cette journée d'étude s'attachera aux découpages sociaux-économiques, ce qui permettra de réévaluer le rôle des élites tribales dans leur rapport avec les pouvoirs dominants. Il sera aussi intéressant d’étudier, les dynamiques internes des sociétés tribales à partir de leur relation aux systèmes politiques et administratifs ; les interactions avec les communautés politiques et les modalités d’intégration culturelle et religieuse aux cultures dominantes ; les usages linguistiques et onomastiques encore mal appréciés ; les figures politiques porteuses d’affirmations identitaires contemporaines (Jugurtha, Tacfarinas...).

The Eure valley - a river and territories
La position historique et la configuration géographique du bassin versant de l’Eure, à l’ouest du bassin Parisien, offrent un cadre riche et original pour aborder les questionnements sur les logiques d’occupation du sol, les dynamiques de peuplement et la structuration des territoires, sur le temps long et à différentes échelles. Sur le plan géographique, l’Eure forme une sorte de colonne vertébrale d’orientation Sud / Nord, entre la Loire (avec laquelle elle n’a pas de lien hydrographique) et la Seine dans laquelle elle se jette. Cette position la met au cœur de phénomènes pluriels d’évolution des territoires, conséquence directe des évolutions politiques dont elle est témoin, qui rendent complexes, rétrospectivement, notre compréhension et appréhension de l’évolution des cultures matérielles aux influences multiples.
