  The drudges of the Axis : exploitable persecuted persons and ambivalent persecutors during WWII (Asia, Europe, Latin America)

  This meeting is a continuation of the UFA (French-German University) Montpellier-Weimar Colloquium "Construction of myths of war heroes (Germany, France, Japan) organized by Philippe Wellnitz and Gérard Siary in Berlin in 2014. After having there discussed the ambivalence in the construction of "war-heroe", this new conference is interested this time in two other ambivalences associated with the Second World War: those of the positioning of certain host states and "the ethics of survival" of persecuted persons who fled from Axis-occupied territories to other Axis-allied or to neutral States.

  Jan Valtin retrospective (1941-1951)

  Il n’y a pas beaucoup d’écrivains dont l’œuvre fut aussi fulgurante et la vie aussi pleine de rebondissements que celle de Jan Valtin. Son premier livre, Out of the Night, s’imposa dès sa sortie comme le plus grand succès de l'édition américaine depuis Gone with the wind (Autant en emporte le vent) ; il fut vendu à plus d’un million d’exemplaires aux États-Unis, en moins d’un an, et fut plus tard traduit dans de nombreuses langues. Ce récit à couper le souffle de la vie d’un révolutionnaire allemand sous la République de Weimar et la première période du nazisme avait pour mérite d’éclairer la façon dont l’action des communistes contre la social-démocratie en tant qu’ennemi principal avait conduit à l’alliance objective des totalitarismes pour détruire la démocratie bourgeoise.

  Die Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW) ist eine Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts mit Sitz in Berlin. Ihr wissenschaftliches Profil ist vor allem geprägt durch langfristig orientierte Grundlagenforschung der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften. Die Akademie beschäftigt etwa 350 Mitarbeiter/innen, ihr Jahresbudget beträgt rund 20 Mio. Euro.

  "Civilising" the world, "wilding up" Europe?

  The circulation of knowledge, the transfer of knowledge and "mimicry" in the German-speaking colonial space

  Ce colloque est centré sur la dynamique circulatoire des savoirs, des transferts de connaissance et des représentations, liée à la notion d’autorité et à l’expérience impériale des mondes germanophones et de leur sphère coloniale. Celle-ci ne se limite pas aux territoires officiellement colonisés, mais comprend l’ensemble des territoires à travers le monde où se sont établis des « colonies d’Allemands » (Amériques, etc.). L’on s’intéressera tout particulièrement au phénomène de retour de l’expérience coloniale, sur la mise en scène de soi par rapport à l’autre colonial, dans le cadre d’une « mimicry inversée », aux discours, représentations, productions textuelles et visuelles et aux projections imaginatives engendrées, tant du côté du colonisateur que du colonisé.

  The Wisdom of the Ancients. Jerusalem rediscovers Athens

  The German-Jewish Revaluation of Ancient Philosophy

  Between 1920 and 1930, a group of young, brilliant Jewish researchers studied in Germany under the direction of Cassirer, Husserl and Heidegger. Leo Strauss, Karl Löwith, Hans Jonas, Hannah Arendt, Jacob Klein, Eric Weil, Günther Anders, and others were forced by the advent of Nazism to escape from Germany and to wander around the world. All these thinkers strove to question the historicist assumption, according to which Modernity is to be seen as progress in respect to the Ancient thought. In their studies, they found new ways to listen to the voice of the Ancients, by revaluating them in the context of the crisis of modern thought. Starting from Athens and Jerusalem, the symbolic roots of western culture, these philosophers problematized and revitalized the quarrel between Ancients and Moderns over again.

  Romanistik in Bewegung

  Erstmalig findet in diesem Jahr die literaturwissenschaftliche Sommerschule des Deutschen Romanistenverbandes statt. Sie wird 2014 von RomanistInnen der Universitäten Halle-Wittenberg, Köln und Potsdam in Zusammenarbeit mit dem DRV ausgerichtet. Unter dem Titel „Romanistik in Bewegung“ ist die Potsdamer Sommerschule die Auftaktveranstaltung zu einer Reihe von DRV Sommerschulen, die nach dem Motto „Vom Nachwuchs für den Nachwuchs“ fortan im jährlichen Bewerbungsverfahren zu unterschiedlichen Themen durchgeführt werden können.
