  Rethinking the History of the Rust Belt since 1945

  This region, stretching from western New York to eastern Iowa, was until the middle of the 20th century the country's manufacturing and industrial heartland. From the Great Migrations that radically transformed its demographics to the weakening of its economic model, as well as the massive struggles waged by local workers and protagonists of the Civil Rights movement, the political and social history of the Rust Bel. By bringing into dialogue the ongoing or recently completed research of doctoral students and junior academics with a view to opening up new perspectives on the history of the Rust Belt, from a range of disciplines (history, sociology, political science, geography), we intend to highlight spaces and actors too often relegated to the margins of this region’s history, despite their having decisively contributed to shaping the contemporary Rust Belt

  Alimentation, environnement et santé : l'actualité de l'œuvre et de la pensée de Josué de Castro (1908-1973)

  Colloque international

  Josué de Castro fut une personnalité d’envergure internationale, président de la FAO dont l’ouvrage Géopolitique de la faim eut un retentissement considérable durant les années 50. Médecin et universitaire, il a, sa vie durant écrit et témoigné sur la faim au Brésil puis dans le monde, sur la malnutrition, sur les relations entre environnements, ressources alimentaires et santé. Professeur, il le fut au Brésil, et comme invité à l’étranger. Banni par la dictature en 1964, son exil fut la France, où il devint professeur associé au Centre universitaire expérimental de Vincennes, créée par Edgar Faure à la suite de mai 1968 et devenu l’université de Paris 8 -Vincennes. Ce colloque correspond en même temps au centenaire de la naissance de Josué de Castro, au quarantième anniversaire de mai 1968, et à un moment où la question de l’alimentation dans le monde, y compris dans certaines couches sociales des pays dits « riches » est une question vive, même et surtout parce que ses composantes en sont pour une part différentes de celles qui prévalaient lorsqu’il écrivait.
