Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents
The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 5: Who named the gods? Utterers, addressers, ritual agents” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. This year, it focuses on the human agents in the process of naming the divine, whether they are producers of a discourse on the deities, addressers in a communication with the deities, or even experts in charge of a ritual knowledge. What agency do men and women exercise in the production of a specific denomination of the divine? How can we question their choices, their anchoring in a tradition or their innovation strategies?

Actions, objects, relations: an interdisciplinary perspective
Cet atelier doctoral vise à dégager des pistes pour repenser la citoyenneté en Méditerranée, en désincrustant celle-ci des essentialisations culturelles, des épistémès disciplinaires, et des traditions historiographiques nationales. Il part d’une définition large de la citoyenneté, qui ne se restreint pas à l’obtention d’un statut conditionnant l’exercice de droits politiques, mais qui prend en compte les processus de construction des droits d’accès aux ressources locales (telles que le travail, le logement, l’assistance etc.). En adoptant une perspective interdisciplinaire, ce projet veut faire dialoguer, à partir de terrains géographiques et d’époques différentes, des conditions d’affirmation citoyenne formalisées par l’inégal droit d’accès aux ressources locales.

The Ottoman Empire is one of the multi-ethnic, multi-confessional and transcontinental empires that, for centuries, shaped the history of Europe and the world. Despite their collapses, their effects can be felt up to the present day. The Ottoman Empire’s history is usually divided into two phases: its construction and consolidation from the 14th to the 17th century, and its decay and collapse from the 18th to the 20th century.

Durant cette semaine, les étudiants suivront et discuteront en matinée des conférences données par des professeurs (des universités partenaires, mais aussi des professeurs invités). L’après-midi, les étudiants travailleront par groupes en ateliers théâtre et/ou écriture.

The Vulnerability and Marginality of Youth in the Mediterranean Basin (19th-20th centuries)
French Journal for the History of “Unconventional” Childhood
The Revue d’histoire de l’enfance “irrégulière” (the French Journal for the History of “Unconventional” Childhood) will devote its next issue to the different perceptions and management policies focused on irregular or marginal youth in the countries of the Mediterranean basin (i.e. the northern coast of the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Mashriq and the Maghreb) throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Specifically, we expect that the study of the public policies adopted by the countries of the region to deal with their youth will put the hypothesis of the unity and singularity of the Mediterranean to the test: either it will allow some sort of shared approach to emerge or, on the contrary, it will expose the Mediterranean as a cultural and ideological construct.

Crisis and growth in the economies of the Ancient world
Table ronde organisée par l’Institut universitaire de France, l’université de Lyon 2, l’UMR 5189 HISOMA et la Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée, l’université de Lille 3 et l’UMR 8164 HALMA-IPEL. La question est d’abord méthodologique : à quoi reconnaît-on une crise, ou inversement des indices de croissance, dans nos sources ? Comment peut-on analyser, en contexte, une amélioration des conditions de vie des populations ? Comment interpréter les moments d’échec dans les économies antiques ? Il s’agit également de s’interroger sur la formulation et la perception par les Anciens de ces notions de crise, de croissance et de progrès.

La Revue des mondes musulmans et de la Méditerranée lance un appel à propositions pour un numéro thématique consacré aux calendriers, aux mesures et rythmes du temps. Ce numéro voudrait être l’occasion de donner un premier inventaire des techniques de mesure du temps, et des rythmes qu’elles induisent, replacés dans leur contexte social et historique. La réflexion s'articule autour de trois axes principaux : La mesure du temps ; les circulations, emprunts et conflits ; les rythmes du quotidien. -

7th International Colloquium Compostela
The 7th International Colloquium Compostela aims at analysing the myth of the "translatio" of the body of Saint James from Palestina to Santiago de Compostela and its impact in the historical construction of the Jacobean pilgrimages. As in the former editions, focusing on an interdisciplinary approach, the Colloquium analyzes the state of the art in the archeological research of Palestinian and Compostela in the early centuries, the studies about the traditions of the translatio, the iconography and the literary and social impact of the "translatio" and the current reality of pilgrimages to Compostella. -

L'équipe EMAM de l'UMR CNRS 6173 CITERES de Tours organise une table ronde qui aura lieu le 8 avril à l'Université François Rabelais, site Tanneurs, Amphi 2 Extension, de 9h30 à 18h00. L'argument est de stricte actualité : « les mouvements sociaux de l'Afrique du Nord et du Proche Orient : l'heure des révolutions ? » La table ronde sera structurée en deux sessions: « témoignages » le matin et « analyses » l'après-midi, avec la participation de chercheurs qui sont en train de vivre dans leurs propres pays les bouleversements en cours dans la rive sud de la Méditerranée, provenant de Tunisie, Egypte, Mauritanie, Albanie ; et des spécialistes de ces questions français et internationaux. -

Religions and Politics in Europe's Orients (14th-20th c.)
The goal of this conference is to explore a number of aspects of the relationship between the religious phenomenon and politics through the historical framework of political developments in what progressively will become, through interaction, the Orients of Europe, i.e. Eastern and Southeastern Europe as well as the Eastern Mediterranean, an area so unorthodox and difficult to examine in terms of essentialist definitions. It is no accident that Samuel Huntington believed that what we call the ‘Orthodox East’ does not form a part of the West, but rather a sui generis encounter between Christianity and Islam at the borders of Europe. This theoretical scheme is not overturned by drawing the borders of Europe a little further to the East, as many believe, but by historicizing the issue of the relationship between religion and politics in the given geographical region through the comparative prism of what was occurring during the same period in Western Europe. -

What is the historical experience of cities in the former territories of the Ottoman Empire - in the Balkans, Anatolia, the Middle East, and North Africa - in dealing with the impact of global changes and the transformation from Empire to nation States? How did people of different cultural, social and religious backgrounds live together? How are such examples of conviviality, conflict, migration, and urban regimes of governance and stratification conceptualized? And how have urban traditions been reinterpreted, and what bearing does this have on modern conceptions of civil society, multicultural societies, migration, or cosmopolitanism. These and other questions will be addressed in this year’s Seminar in Ottoman Urban Studies. Séminaire organisé par Ulrike Freitag et Nora Lafi.
