Peripheries, Minorities and Taboos in the films of Marcel Łoziński, Pál Schiffer and Želimir Žilnik
The international conference bears a transdisciplinary outlook as it cross-references a variety of scientific fields (history of cinema, aesthetics, philosophy, history, political science, anthropology, sociology, etc.). A film retrospective of documentary films will be held at the Cinémathèque du documentaire (Centre Pompidou, Paris), as well as screenings followed by debates and panel discussions at Inalco in the presence of the filmmakers Marcel Łoziński and Želimir Žilnik.

"All Alone" in East-Central Europe: Reinventing the Orphan from the Fascist to the Socialist Era
International PhD Contract 2020-2023
Full-time, 36-month-long international PhD contract at Sorbonne University (PhD program IV) within the research centre Eur'ORBEM and in partnership with the French Research Centre in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, from 1 October 2020, under the supervision of Clara Royer. The PhD thesis may be written in French or in English. PhD propositions should focus on the discourses and practices surrounding the orphan condition in literature and/or visual arts (cinema, photography, graphic arts and so forth) in the wake of the violence and demographic upheavals that characterized 20th century East-Central Europe. Because of its interdisciplinary scope, applicants with a background in social history, literary studies and/or visual arts specialized in one or several countries of East-Central Europe may apply.

Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

Border Textures: Interwoven Practices and Discursive Fabrics of Borders
2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel
In view of the current political developments in Europe, the scientific study of borders has increasingly gained importance. Cultural Studies has reacted to these developments by generating complex and more and more detailed theories and tools for describing and analyzing border phenomena. Cultural border studies champion approaches which do not examine spatial, material, temporal or cultural aspects in isolation but investigate their intersectional and performative interactions. This panel provides a space for explorative investigation of potential approaches for cultural border studies, focusing on interactions between material and immaterial manifestations of the border.

2nd World Conference of the Association for Borderlands Studies - Panel
The societal events of the last decade have challenged Border Studies more than ever before. This can be seen not only in the field’s growing institutionalisation but also in its developments in research: these include the relativization of geopolitical perspectives by cultural studies approaches, the spatialisation of the border concept (e.g. zone, third space, exter/internalisation etc.), the decentralisation of the border in favour of processes (e.g. b/ordering, othering etc.), the pluralisation of the border concept (e.g. walls, differences, (dis)continuities, demarcations) or the complexification of the border (e.g. scapes, textures). The panel is treating these developments and other turns as an opportunity for a long-overdue self-examination, which in the light of the resurgence of borders seems necessary from both a societal and scientific perspective.

Quantification / approximation and nominal groups: trees and forests
La journée se propose de réunir des linguistes intéressés par les différents aspects de la quantification et de l’approximation, si ce n’est par l’interface entre les deux problématiques, tant dans la sphère du groupe nominal (GN), que par l’intermédiaire de GN (intégrés à des syntagmes adverbiaux à portée émargeant éventuellement le domaine du GN : adverbiaux qui quantifient sur le temps ou sur les événements, approximateurs en tous genres, à portée y compris nominale). Nous employons à bon escient le terme de groupe nominal pour ce qu’il a de vague, en référence à l’analyse en constituants immédiats (syntagme déterminant (SD) à tête fonctionnelle D vs syntagme nominal SN à spécificateur SD).

Translations et reconfigurations russes entre Orient et Occident (XVIe-XXe siècle)
Bien avant l'occidentalisation imposée par Pierre le Grand, la Russie a accueilli une abondante littérature occidentale en privilégiant les œuvres médiévales. Nous nous interrogerons sur le rôle joué au XVIIe siècle par leы Jésuites, le bureau des Ambassadeurs et des aristocrates et prélats dans ce large mouvement d'acculturation. Au travers de divers types de textes (exempla, romans de chevalerie, nouvelles, ouvrages de pastorale), nous suivrons les diverses modalités de translation et reconfiguration russes de des matériaux narratifs ainsi que leurs mises en images dans les peintures murales des églises de l'Anneau d'Or, les manuscrits enluminés et les loubki.

Appropriations, disparities, redefinitions
Les reconfigurations des normes du patrimoine de ces vingt dernières années ont profondément bouleversé le paysage de la culture à l’échelle mondiale, notamment au travers de l’apparition de la catégorie du patrimoine immatériel et de nouvelles frontières entre les patrimoines naturel et culturel. Dorénavant tout est potentiellement patrimoine. À des échelles diverses, les enjeux et tensions contribuent à la mise en place d'une géopolitique du patrimoine dans laquelle celui-ci devient instrument de soft power et élément de politique locale. Que provoquent ces nouvelles configurations ? Comment les « détenteurs de patrimoine » doivent ou peuvent-ils se positionner face aux institutions ? Comment se réapproprient-ils ce qui est considéré comme une identité culturelle et qui leur échappe ? Quels en sont les enjeux pour ce qui n'est pas spontanément considéré comme du patrimoine et qui tendrait à le devenir ?

Ce cycle de rencontres scientifiques vise à approcher la question des acteurs du patrimoine urbain (au sens large et au-delà des monuments classés ou historiques) et celle des conflits de mémoire que la patrimonialisation engendre. Dans une perspective assez généraliste et introductive, cette première journée sera l’occasion de revenir sur la question de la gouvernance dans les trois contextes aux histoires, cultures, et gestions patrimoniales différentes, mais soumis à des injonctions (Europe, Unesco) de « bonne gouvernance » et de « participation ». -

Tourism and Memory in Central and Eastern Europe: returning to the places of trauma
Remembering violence in Central and Eastern Europe
Depuis 1989 est apparu un « tourisme du retour » sur les lieux des violences commises envers les populations par ou dans le sillage des régimes totalitaires du XXe siècle. Ce tourisme mémoriel, variante du « tourisme noir », se dirige d’une part vers les lieux de la destruction (Auschwitz, Treblinka) ou de la répression, mais aussi vers lieux où ces persécutions ont eu lieu et où l’histoire familiale s’est cassée. Les « touristes du souvenir » cherchent les traces d’une brisure, d’un traumatisme, d’une mémoire qui hante leur présent et qu’ils cherchent à exorciser. Ils cherchent à reconstituer une partie d’une histoire familiale ou individuelle inconnue ou perdue, parfois sur plusieurs générations. La quête de cette mémoire meurtrie est devenue un élément de la construction identitaire et de pratiques sociales en Europe centrale et orientale.
