Frontier(s) and Frontier-zone(s) in the English-speaking world

It may be argued that any frontier is the expression of what is discontinuous, of the existence of an ‘inside’ and of an ‘outside’, in short, that a frontier is an attempt to keep the ‘other’ at bay, whatever the meaning of the term – a given geographical territory, or a specific political entity, or a different culture, or else all of these put together. These considerations are in tune with the etymological origin of the word ‘frontier’ itself, i.e. anything that helps a group of people ‘develop a united front’. Examples abound, from the so-called ‘natural’ frontier of this or that country to Brexit, to the wall that President Trump has set out to build between his own country and Mexico.

Si l’origine exacte de l’expression « good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere! » est incertaine, tantôt attribuée à l’actrice et scénariste américaine Mae West tantôt à la rédactrice en chef du magazine Cosmopolitan, Helen Gurvey Brown, elle a été reprise comme slogan par les féministes qui dénoncent la double norme sexuelle imposée aux femmes par les religions. Aujourd’hui quels que soient les intégrismes religieux (catholique, protestant, islamique, juif, hindouiste, bouddhiste, orthodoxe, etc.) ils partagent tous la volonté de maîtriser le corps et la sexualité des femmes dont l’existence aurait, selon eux, pour but unique la maternité.

L'ouvrage portera sur l'héritage des villes nouvelles en France et au Royaume-Uni sous l'angle comparatif. Les thématiques couvertes sont détaillées plus bas et peuvent inclure entre autres la gouvernance des villes nouvelles, leur patrimoine, leur économie ou encore leur développement spatial.

Medieval Conceptions and Practices of Space

Though space is by no means a medieval concept (in 14th century use, the word referred primarily to time, or to an interval between two objects, rather than to the abstract idea of an extended area that can be filled or crossed), the concept in its complexity has over the last decades gained considerable critical importance in medieval studies. Medievalists have always paid attention to spatial questions, namely in the shape of inquiries into the location of national or religious communities, into medieval practices of pilgrimages, processions and travels, or into the symbolic associations of various places (the forest, the garden, the castle…).

How can one assess the adhesion of individuals and social groups to the multi-ethnic and multicultural British nation of our times? The French Journal of Medieval English Studies BAM is seeking submissions for a special issue focusing on the notion of “revolution”. The word “revolution” does not appear in English before the 14th century. The word is borrowed from French revolucion, derived from the Latin revolvere. In medieval Latin the meaning of revolutio becomes both scientific and religious as it describes the movement of celestial bodies and the transmigration of souls (metempsychosis). The first known occurrence of the word “revolution” to describe an abrupt change in social order dates from 1450. However, that use does not become common until the end of the 17th century.

Great Britain, Ireland, Empire and Commonwealth
“The Angel in the House” is the image most commonly retained of British women in the nineteenth century. This reductive and repressive ideal, emerging from values propagated by the literary, religious, medical political discourses of the time, still persists today in the collective unconscious. Although this model has increasingly been questioned by researchers in the humanities, the focus has tended to be on the beginning of the 20th century. This one-day conference aims to pursue this still neglected area, bringing the Victorian and Edwardian woman further out of her “cloister” or “sphere”, and exploring the destinies of those women who occupied the public space in Great Britain, Ireland and, by extension, the Empire: activists, explorers, artists, writers and sportswomen to name but a few.

Le Royaume-Uni offre depuis longtemps un terreau fertile pour les utopies et expérimentations urbaines. De Utopia de Thomas More en 1516 aux New Towns des années 1950 et 1960 en passant par News from Nowhere de William Morris en 1890, la société britannique a fourni l’inspiration à nombre de visionnaires critiques de la société contemporaine afin de formuler des projets sociétaux autres. Cette journée d'études s’intéressera aux projets mis en œuvre en milieu urbain depuis le XIXe siècle pour transformer celui-ci et parfois, au-delà, la société britannique dans son ensemble.

Rencontre annuelle régulière le Festival international de géographie se veut un évènement à la fois scientifiquement très rigoureux et accessible au plus large public possible. Au cours de ses trois journées, plus de 10.000 personnes assistent aux conférences, tables-rondes, expositions, démonstrations, etc. Les contributions émanant de tous les champs des sciences sociales sont les bienvenues. Elles peuvent traiter soit du thème de l'année (Habiter la terre) soit du pays invité (les Îles britanniques) et prendre diverses formes : conférence personnelle, présentation d'un ouvrage, d'un film documentaire, de posters scientifiques, d'un programme informatique, d'une dégustation commentée au salon de la gastronomie. Le FIG se déroulera du 3 au 5 octobre 2014.

Rails and urban development. A Comparative Approach between France and the United Kingdom
In France as in the United Kingdom, the issue of sustainable development along with preoccupations about energy costs are leading developers and urban planners to put rail transport at the centre of their concerns. Despite this similar context and though development in both countries has in general been strongly linked to rail, the relationships between urban development and rail transport seem to be quite different. France has seen a strong development of its tram networks since the beginning of the 1980s, whereas in Britain the revival of light rail systems has been more modest. On the other hand, the emergence of urban ‘railway star’ networks to service the peripheries of large cities has been more pronounced in Britain. Yet the role of major transport projects is a crucial issue in both countries in the metropolitan strategies of large urban areas like London and Paris.To comparatively explore the issue of railway transport and urban development the universities of Paris 1 Sorbonne and Liverpool are organising two linked seminars. The first of these will take place in Paris in May 2012, and consider the (re)development of LRT and tramway systems. The second seminar will be held in Liverpool in Autumn 2012 and address the issue of links between territorial development and railways. -

Cadres et modes de vie dans l’espace maritime Manche-Mer du Nord du IIIe au Xe siècle
Les cultures des espaces maritimes et littoraux sont le thème de la table ronde de clôture des trois premières années d’activité d'un projet collectif de recherche. Son éclairage thématique transversal permettra de réexaminer la problématique des occupations côtières sur les quatre plans de la fréquentation, de l’exploitation, de la maîtrise et de l’aménagement des espaces littoraux, intégrant la question des échanges et des relations qu’ils conditionnent, sur le plan strictement humain, des idées, de l’économie et des techniques notamment. Nous souhaitons placer les apports des recherches récentes en Nord-Pas-de-Calais dans une perspective qui s’émancipe de sphères géographiques étroitement contingentées ou de périodes trop précisément définies, en considérant la bande côtière Manche-Mer du nord de la Normandie au delta rhéno-mosan, de la fin du IIIe siècle à la fin du Xe siècle. -
