  Copyright and the Circulation of Knowledge

  Industry Practices and Public Interests in Great Britain from the 18th Century to the Present

  New combinations of technology, culture, and business practice are transforming relationships among authors, publishers, and audiences in many fields of knowledge, including journalism, science research, and academia. Self-publishing, open-access, open source, creative commons, crowd sourcing and copy left: these are a few of the key words associated with recent changes in how knowledge is produced and circulated. While being celebrated for their potential to democratize knowledge, many of these changes have been accompanied by heated debates on such questions as the appropriate role of experts and ‘gatekeepers’; how to ensure that such projects are both trustworthy and economically viable; and how best to balance the interests of authors, publishers, and the general public. Copyright is often at the centre of these discussions.

  British Philanthropies 1750-1914

  Reforming and Redeeming the World and the Metropolis

  This one-day conference wishes to explore those concurring and complementing aspects and the evolutions that philanthropy underwent between 1750 and 1914 in the British Empire and the metropolis. PhD and postgrad students whose researches focus on philanthropic endeavours and societies, missionary organizations and/or philanthropic literature from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century are more than welcome to speak on this occasion. Speakers are also invited to reflect on the historiographical perspectives of those issues and discuss their representations and treatment in school curricula, commemoration events and ceremonies, such as the 2007 Bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in the UK.

  Configurations

  Ce colloque a pour dessein de se pencher sur la contribution de l’informatique aux sciences humaines sous l’angle des configurations des divers éléments constitutifs de la recherche (objet, outil, production). On s’attachera par exemple à mettre en évidence les répercussions du recours à l’instrumentation électronique sur la configuration des savoirs (la définition des champs disciplinaires au sein des sciences humaines et le rapport de ces dernières aux sciences dites dures) et sur la configuration de la recherche individuelle dans le cadre d’une communicabilité toujours accrue qui facilite la participation à des projets collectifs d’envergure.

  Faisant suite à une première journée d'étude en octobre 2011, qui a interrogé plus spécifiquement les rapports complexes entre nature et temporalité depuis le XVIIIe siècle, une deuxième journée d'étude aura lieu le 8 juin 2012, au cours de laquelle nous nous interrogerons sur les interactions entre nature et milieu urbain.

  La deuxième journée d'étude de l'association One Piece at A Time sur les arts britanniques est réalisée en partenariat avec l'université Paris-Diderot et aura lieu le 5 juin 2010. Elle sera consacrée aux échos des sociétés géorgiennes et victoriennes dans les arts contemporains britanniques. Comment se manifestent ses résurgences et que disent-elles du moment postmoderne dans lequel elles s'inscrivent ? Comment les différentes disciplines, d'histoire de l'art, de littérature et de civilisations anglophones ou encore d'esthétique ou d'histoire répondent ces cette problématique commune ?
