Language and Performance: Moving across Discourses and Practices in a Globalized World
European Journal of Theatre and Performance
The European Journal of Theatre and Performance is inviting submissions for its next issue. Against the backdrop of a deeply diversified and often divided global stage, this issue wants to reconsider the fairly strenuous debate on the relationship between language and performance, which has surfaced repeatedly yet in various guises in the field of the performing arts. The editors more specifically invite contributions that critically inquire into how language either enables or impedes the creation and development of performance works, the dissemination of scholarly research, or the reconciliation of local traditions with international tendencies in both the arts and academia. The overarching aim is to shed new light on the intricate connections between language and performance by focusing on the various ways in which performance always operates on the microlevel of concrete practices as well as in dialogue with the macrolevel of larger sociopolitical and cultural contexts.

L'appel à communications pour la journée d'étude « Corps en mouvement(s) », organisée par l'Association des doctorants de l'Ouest en confluences (AIDOC), est ouvert aux masterant·e·s, doctorant·e·s et jeunes chercheur·e·s. La thématique est comprise au sens large, et questionne à la fois les relations entre l'évolution des corps et les identités individuelles, ou les performances, qu'elles soient artistiques, sportives, etc. Une approche davantage géographique et sociale permet d'envisager le sujet sous l'angle des déplacements et migrations ou des mouvements sociaux.

Crossing French Metropolises: Exiled Artists and Intellectuals during the 20th century
Following “Arrival Cities: Migrating Artists and New Metropolitan Topographies”, the first conference of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD) held at the LMU Munich in November/December 2018, a workshop will be organized at the German Center for Art History (DFK Paris), on 4 July 2019. Building on common interests of the DFK Paris and METROMOD—such as movements of artists, ideas and productions—this workshop will focus on the temporary exile of artists and intellectuals in French cities throughout the twentieth century, which was marked by (e)migration waves. Located at the crossroads of disciplines such as Art History, Exile Studies, History of Sociology, Architecture and Urban Studies, this topic calls for a transdisciplinary approach.

Dance and geography: mobilities, circulations and imaginary worlds
L’Atelier des doctorants en danse propose de rassembler des réflexions menées par de jeunes chercheurs dont l’objet d’étude porte sur les arts chorégraphiques, la danse ou, plus largement, l’objet corps, et dont les approches s’inscrivent dans le champ de la géographie. Les échanges nourris par ces réflexions mettront en avant un questionnement concernant la fabrication d’un imaginaire conféré par des éléments spatiaux sur un territoire donné. Dans cette perspective, comment les études en danse et en géographie peuvent-elles dialoguer ? Si la danse est devenue assez tardivement un objet d’étude pour les géographes, on remarque que le mouvement et l’espace sont quant à eux des enjeux fondamentaux dans bon nombre d’études en danse.

Part of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD), it addresses metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20th century.

Rethinking the Worlds of Music and Dance through contemporary (Im)mobility
This conference proposes to provide transversal and transdisciplinary reflections on the various modalities of mobility and migration that are created through the arts, as well as the remaking of the worlds of music and dance in the transnational field. It will question the modalities of movement or of impediments to circulate that are revealed by music and dance’s analysis; the way in which the worlds of art and contemporary creations are shaped by different forms of (im)mobility; and how, in this wake, individuals act on their social environments and on the power relations in which they evolve.

Le processus migratoire de la dernière décennie que le nouveau paradigme nommera « exil de masse contemporain » échappe à une approche monodisciplinaire par sa critériologie complexe. La variété des causes de la migration actuelle et leur convergence appellent l’élaboration d’une épistémologie conçue au carrefour des méthodologies. À cette fin, les études exiliques mobilisent dans une volonté transdisciplinaire l’ensemble des sciences humaines et sociales, voire même d’autres disciplines telles que la médecine (« la santé et la migration ») ou l’ingénierie (« les transports et la migration »). Travailler sur l’exil et la migration trouve sa légitimité renforcée par la résonnance des thèmes traités avec les prémisses de débats majeurs des sociétés occidentales : citoyenneté, ethnicité, laïcité, xénophobie, droits de l’homme.

Itinerant arts trades - migrating artisans (Europe 17th-19th centuries)
Il s'agit d'étudier, dans un contexte de migration, la nature des dynamiques sociales à l’œuvre avec l’arrivée de populations émigrées d’artisans des métiers d'art, en milieu urbain et/ou rural, du XVIIe au XIXe siècle. Si une partie du dossier portera sur la présence des Italiens en France, d'autres cas peuvent être abordés en Europe et pour diverses spécialités (peintre-décorateur, maître-verrier, stucateur, mosaïste, figuriste, etc.). Une approche par les réseaux et les transferts culturels est souhaitée. Envisager la question des circulations invite également à conduire une réflexion sur l’identification d’une « identité artistique » de ces artisans émigrés.

Czech and Slovak Journal of Humanities, special musicological issue
For the upcoming issue of the peer-reviewed journal Czech and Slovak Journal of Humanities (August 2017) we are looking for studies focused on various aspects related to the phenomena of “music” and “popularity”. We invite articles anchored in classical music as well as popular music. Papers which directly or indirectly problematize the traditional polarisation of the aforementioned musical spheres are especially welcome. The issue provides space for specific historical investigations and case studies, but also for wider theoretical considerations which would reflect the construction of the phenomena of the so-called classical and popular music from social, political / ideological, economic, philosophical and other perspectives. In this respect, approaches of ethnomusicology and cultural geography, which would touch on the topic with regard to the specifics of particular localities, regions, nations and ethnic groups, are most desirable.

Travelling Narratives and Images in Times of Migration
Migrant narratives and aesthetic practices influenced by experiences of migration constitute a growing field in contemporary art and literature. Current patterns of migration and issues related to the protection of refugees and asylum seekers contribute to the strong societal impact of migrant aesthetics and narrratives, but also serve to explain the need for them as such, as well as the need to reexamine them. More than ever, we need to understand the experiences of exiles, migrants and refugees. The objective of this interdisciplinary seminar is to examine textual, material and visual expressions that represent, discuss and problematize migration.

3rd annual seminar of the Migrations network
Le séminaire annuel abordera la double thématique : « La migration, au miroir des arts, et des questions d’éthique ». Cette journée sera en partie dédiée à la vie du réseau et à la création d’un espace informel de discussion pour les chercheurs dans les études migratoires, dans la continuité des premiers événements scientifiques organisés par le réseau depuis juin 2014. L'idée est de créer un cadre informel d'échanges et de discussions où tous les participants pourront évoquer leurs travaux et leurs réflexions, parallèlement et au-delà de la thématique fixée pour l’événement.

The notions of network and artistic transmission
Cette journée d'études veut examiner la place des artisans italiens itinérants en France, durant la période charnière de la fin du XVIIIe et la première moitié du XIXe siècle. Les provinces françaises ont gardé le souvenir de l’activité de peintres italiens que la littérature a désignés péjorativement par l’expression « barbouilleurs d’églises ». D'autres métiers d'art (mosaïstes, figuristes, stucateurs, etc.) sont également concernés par ette enquête qui a pour objectif d’analyser le milieu des migrants, de documenter leur arrivée en France, leur intégration professionnelle dans les paroisses rurales et les petites villes, les réseaux qu’ils ont constitués.

The role of foreigners in the production and distribution of the arts in Europe (16th-20th century)
Le séminaire entend interroger la notion d’échange artistique, si fréquemment utilisée dans les recherches actuelles. Il s’agit de restaurer la question du point de vue, en mettant en évidence l’importance du lieu depuis lequel on observe ces phénomènes. Le métissage de cultures et d’expériences dont témoignent les arts visuels et l’architecture peut être observé selon deux modalités opposées : une première, suivant un mouvement linéaire, souligne les continuités et les similitudes des influences formelles ; l’autre, centrée sur le lieu et les conditions de production, décline un contexte multipolaire et composite. On dessine alors deux géographies de l’art distinctes.

South-South Axes of Global Art
The decentered internationalism espoused by the Havana, Dakar, and Gwangju biennials invites art historians to depart from an exclusively North Atlantic focus. Such a shift in purview seriously considers cities and regions that have been marginalized by previous academic emphases, more so than by their historical circulations of art and culture with the rest of the world. Historicizing and measuring the circulation of art on the former margins is now a decisive task if we want to evidence, nuance, or contest the “provincialization” of Europe and North America in recent art history. Artl@s’ upcoming conference aims to gather an international and transdisciplinary group of researchers to collectively investigate the formation and impediments of what we call “South-South” axes from decolonization to the present day.

Singapour mon amour : The emergence and vicissitudes of an art scene
This colloquium proposes a theoretical perspective on the visual art, film, performance and literature modules of the project Singapour mon amour curated by Lowave. Thematic sessions according to these art genres will draw a bigger picture of the artistic creation in Singapore and will inscribe it into an international art discourse. As a young country, Singapore's art history is still the process of being written and the colloquium aims to collect as many direct sources and witnesses as possible.
