Practices, know-how and movements from Protohistory to the 21st century
Numerous hemp kilns abandoned in the countryside, particularly in western France, remind us of the importance of hemp canvas production during modern and contemporary times. Today, our society is re-discovering this plant which appears to be of interest to make agriculture more environment-friendly. Despite this glorious economic past, the history of hemp as a textile crop has yet to be written. To remedy this limitation, an interdisciplinary approach try to write the intertwined history of men and hemp.

Geoarchaeology and archaeology of the city of Cádiz, Spain
This workshop-seminar organised in Strasbourg will be focusing on the archaeology and geoarchaeology of Cádiz. New sedimentary cores drilled in a marine palaeochannel crossing the city in Antiquity will be discussed. Researchers from the University of Cádiz, the CNRS, the ENGEES, and the University of Strasbourg will be present.

Occupying Space during Bronze and Iron Ages: From site to landscape
6th Doctoral Meetings of the European School of Protohistory of Bibracte
Archaeology and Space have always been intrinsically connected. On one hand, different attributes of the environment affected human beings forcing them to adapt their behaviour in order to succeed, while on the other, in doing so, communities have influenced their surrounding spaces by transforming them, in some cases irreversibly. As all human actions are by definition immersed in space, for this year’s meeting we have decided to approach the questions of understanding and interpreting these complex processes looking through the prism of scale on which they happen. The extent of these ranges from the processes that occur on the small levels in the spaces of archaeological sites extending to the larger levels when dealing with the narrative of cultural landscapes. Sessions will provide reflection on the social and spatial aspects of archaeological sites and landscapes and will incorporate themes related to subsistence, economy, social behaviour and ideology within the timespan of the European Bronze and Iron Ages.

Watertraces interdisciplinary conference
Ce colloque interdisciplinaire est organisé dans le cadre du programme Watertraces, soutenu par la fondation Amidex d’Aix-Marseille Université. Il a pour objectif principal d’encourager un dialogue étroit entre les disciplines archéologiques et environnementales, en présentant et en interprétant des études de cas datées de l’Antiquité méditerranéenne, et plus précisément du 4e s. av. J.-C. au 1er s. apr. J.-C. Il s’agit de présenter des études novatrices sur des sites en partie sélectionnés sur la base de critères géologiques et hydrogéologiques.

Dynamiques environnementales journal
La revue Dynamiques Environnementales souhaite réaliser un numéro centré sur la thématique de l’interaction entre les sociétés humaines du passé avec les phénomènes littoraux. Ce volume a pour ambition de croiser les approches archéologiques, géoarchéologiques et géomorphologiques afin de comprendre les dynamiques milieu/société, tout en dressant les paléo-environnements historiques. Cette thématique ne prévoit ni limites géographiques, ni cadre chronologique précis.

Selon une approche multi-disciplinaire et comparative, le sujet de la thèse se propose d’étudier les récits de l’Antiquité classique et les traditions orales des sociétés aborigènes d’Australie et / ou des îles du Pacifique des périodes plus ou moins récentes de l’histoire.

Climate and Societies in the Mediterranean during the Last Two Millennia
Current State Of Knowledge and Research Perspectives
This two-day international conference aims to highlight recent and challenging interdisciplinary studies dealing with complex historical climate/society interactions in Mediterranean during the last two millennia. The study of these existing connections can help in better understanding the role played by past climatic events in the eruption of regional conflicts, in forced migration and displacement of people, in periodically appearing infectious disease outbreaks or in subsistence crises like food shortages and famines Similarly, it seems necessary to identify and analyze socio-economic and technological responses (e.g. water supply systems) together with mitigation and general adaptation strategies, insofar as they existed, to cope with climate change.

From the recent Bronze Age to Romanisation
En réunissant les doctorants et jeunes docteurs – rattachés, ou ayant été rattachés, à une institution française – dont les travaux portent sur l’Italie préromaine (la péninsule et ses îles), entre l’âge du Bronze récent et le début de la romanisation, l’objectif principal des rencontres est de dresser un état des lieux de la jeune recherche en France, tout en favorisant la création de liens et en stimulant les échanges avec les chercheurs plus confirmés invités à modérer ces deux journées. Afin de mettre en évidence les passerelles transdisciplinaires qui caractérisent les travaux sur l’Italie préromaine, les présentations pourront relever des différents champs disciplinaires qui contribuent à enrichir ce domaine des études : archéologie, histoire, géosciences, épigraphie, philologie, numismatique ou encore histoire des collections.

The current state of research in the national par of the Morvan
Depuis plusieurs années, se développent sur le Parc naturel régional du Morvan, et autour du Grand site de France Bibracte-Mont Beuvray, des travaux de recherche, croisant différentes approches, méthodologies, et échelles de temps et d'espace. Ce séminaire pluridisciplinaire semestriel a pour objectif de constituer un lieu d'interface entre recherche fondamentale et recherche appliquée, entre chercheurs, gestionnaires et acteurs de l'environnement (espaces protégés, Parcs, etc...), un lieu de dialogue facilitant le croisement des regards et des résultats des travaux des étudiants, où les protocoles respectifs pourront être affinés collectivement dans un esprit de complémentarité dans la recherche; un lieu d'échanges ouvert à tous ceux intéressés par la démarche partagée et le sujet.

Geoarchaeological and palaeoenvironmental approaches to water resources management in Antiquity
Ce symposium géoarchéologique a pour ambition de réunir des chercheurs spécialistes des géosciences mettant en œuvre des approches géoarchéologiques et environnementales sur la thématique de la gestion des ressources hydriques dans l’espace méditerranéen par les sociétés humaines de l’Antiquité. Il s’agira de croiser différentes approches qui permettent de caractériser d’une part les variations hydroclimatiques à différentes échelles de temps et d’espace, et de discuter du potentiel en ressources hydriques de sites exemplaires, et d’autre part de mettre en évidence les différentes ingénieries mises en œuvre dans l’exploitation et la gestion de la ressource, et de percevoir les interactions entre les dynamiques environnementales et les sociétés humaines (risques sociétaux face aux épisodes de sécheresse, impacts climatique et environnementale sur l’évolution des sociétés).

Paysages d'Orient et de Méditerranée
Une étude comparée de la description des lieux dans le discours géographique antique
Ce projet d’étude « Paysages d’Orient et de Méditerranée » est organisé sur cinq ateliers de travail. Il cherche à s’intéresser aux descriptions des lieux dans les discours géographiques de la littérature antique, en se proposant de mettre en parallèle monde méditerranéen et extra-méditerranéen. Nous voudrions, avec ces ateliers, mieux comprendre les principes et la finalité de la description des lieux dans la « géographie » antique. Chaque journée comprendra la présentation de quatre dossiers documentaires (deux pour le monde méditerranée, deux pour l’Orient), complétée par le regard d’un géographe. Les cinq journées nous permettront d’approcher différents types de paysages : fluviaux, côtiers, urbains, montagnes et confins. La première partie portera sur les littoraux.

From the Caucasus to the Arabian Peninsula: studying domestic spaces in the Neolithic
Under neolithisation scholars understand multiple processes of social and economic transformation which begin at different times and follow regional trends in the Near and Middle East. It is within the complex relational and spatial framework of the household that these shifts in the structure and activities of Neolithic communities are easiest to apprehend and study. The conference will therefore focus on the domestic sphere in order to highlight and understand the polymorphous nature of what we call neolithisation. Various thematic sessions will be held to shed new light on current data: “Impacts of the shift to a sedentary/semi-sedentary lifestyle”; “Organising the house and the household”; “Private space/public space”; “Acquisition, production, transformation and use”; “Eating-Moving”; “Symbolic manifestations”;“The living and the dead”.

Geoarchaeological research in the Black Sea and the Azov Sea
Since the first studies undertaken in 1783 by Gablitz on the chora of Chersonesos, the Black Sea comprises an important area to look at the rural and coastal development of the Greek colonial world. Systematic surveying of ditches and walls that line the western coast of Crimea, initiated within the framework of Catherine II’s Greek project, began several decades before the earliest excavations of the urban spaces in 1832. A decisive new step was made during the 1960s, when archaeological surveys provided fresh insights into the internal organization of several kleroi close to Chersonesos, Kerkinitis and Kalos Limen. Around the same time, in the western Black Sea, the first research on the territory of Istros began, complemented by numerous geomorphological studies of the neighbouring Danube Delta. The foundations of geoarchaeological inquiry had been laid, and these have since been added to thanks to recent research undertaken throughout the Pontic area.

The first International Multidisciplinary Conference in Wādī Rum took place from November 11th to 13th 2011 in Wādī Rum Visitor Center and was the opportunity to review scientific advances about the region. The second edition of the International Multidisciplinary Conference in Wādī Rum will be held in Wādī Rum Visitor Center on November 12th, 13th and 14th 2013. The International Multidisciplinary Conference 2ndedition will be dedicated to the study of the Nabatean territories and economy. The water issue that is particularly at stake in the region, is at the core of this International Multidisciplinary Conference 2nd edition. It will encourage the comparison between what has been done through history in Wādī Rum region and beyond.
