Les Cahiers d’études des cultures ibériques et latino-américaines (CECIL)
The problem of representation is central to the disciplinary fields of all the human and social sciences, most often implicitly. This omnipresence sometimes makes us forget that it is a notion whose definition, status and function are subject to the fluctuations of history. What interests us is the discrepancy between what this notion has been able to encompass over time and what it encompasses nowadays, as well as the explanation that can be given to these discrepancies or possible ruptures. The reflection focuses in particular on the link between the notion of representation and the notions of 'heritage' - tangible or intangible objects, but also products of a social construction - and of 'memory', since it is constructed through concrete representations, whether social or discursive practices.

“New Comparative Mythology” Journal, 5
New Comparative Mythology, a peer-reviewed journal of comparative mythology with an international editorial board, issues, for its fifth volume, a call for papers on the topic “conception, birth and childhood”. In many mythologies, these three initial phases of the existence of divine, heroic, monstrous and other figures have given rise to many traditions. In addition, various beliefs and practices, which are lent legendary or mythical precedents, also rhythm this period which goes from the fertilization to the edge of the initiatory phase of the individuals. It is on the comparative study of this vast field of research that the articles submitted to our review will have to relate.

The temporalities of the sacred - rhythms of religious life

Une approche du sacré (comme catégorie de référence pour qualifier le rapport de l’homme à l’invisible et au surnaturel) et du religieux (comme mise en œuvre institutionnalisée de ce rapport et de ses variantes) en termes de « temporalité » est non seulement pertinente mais à plus d’un titre fédératrice et féconde. Les sciences du religieux ont toutes, en effet, mais sous des angles différents, traité des formes, des déclinaisons et des expériences du temps en tant qu’elles sont des expressions du sacré, mais aussi en tant qu’elles produisent du sacré. Les temporalités du religieux et du sacré méritent qu’on s’y intéresse en ces périodes où les rapports sociaux et politiques entre religions se reconfigurent et les pratiques (inter-) religieuses et syncrétiques se renouvellent, questionnant à nouveaux frais le processus de sécularisation.

Si la modernité est incarnée en Occident par la rationalisation de l’État et de la société qui met à bas les mythes de la tradition et fait s’effondrer l’autorité de la religion et du pouvoir absolu, elle s’exprime dans l’Empire du Milieu d’une autre façon et sous une autre forme. Depuis les guerres de l’Opium au milieu du XIXe siècle, la Chine se trouve sous l’influence massive du monde occidental, et prend l’Occident comme modèle à suivre pour se moderniser. Mais le processus de modernisation de la Chine est cependant marqué par le rejet d’une occidentalisation totale. La modernité occidentale semble étrangère aux Chinois, alors que ces derniers l’ont en réalité adaptée aux circonstances propres à leur pays. Cette journée d’étude vise à étudier les divers aspects de la question de la modernité dans la Chine d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, afin de s’interroger sur les différentes formes de la modernisation « à la chinoise », au niveau politique, dans la société, dans la pensée, dans la littérature, dans les arts et dans la religion.

Thinking freely in religion in English-speaking countries
This conference will explore the different ways by which thinking freely in religion has been understood and practiced in English-speaking countries since the Middle Ages. The starting point is the peculiar way by which freethought has been historically associated with hostility to religion. What is, therefore, thinking freely in religion? The conference calls for papers about the free spaces created by religious traditions and institutions in the English-speaking world and about how these spaces relate to freethought and to any way of thinking freely that is hostile to religion. The conference aims for a long-term perspective on the interactions between freethought and thinking freely, and calls for papers on any historical period from the Middle Ages to the present.

Language contact and translation in religious context
Comparative approaches
This conference brings together anthropologists and linguists working on conversion, cultural transmission and translation theory, as well as on various case studies, whose geography comprises Oceania, Amazonia, Yucatan, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, Europe, Alaska and Chukotka (Russia), and whose temporal frame spreads from the Hellenistic era to the Spanish colonization of the Americas and to the present time. The main questions of the conference are the modalities of the ethnolinguistic encounter and translation accompanying religious conversion, whether, and how, the language gets altered as a result of these processes, and what are the broader cognitive and sociocultural consequences that accompany the linguistic transformation.

Christianity, language contact, language change
The present workshop addresses questions of language contact and language change, as well as language standardization in the Christian context both in Europe and in the New World (Americas, Africa) through a study of diachronic and synchronic corpora. Special attention is paid, on the one hand, to the role of translation as a sight of language contact, and on the other hand, to register variation as an indicator of differential propagation of innovations appeared in Christian context.

La revue Sociétés plurielles (PSP) est née du programme interdisciplinaire de recherche Sociétés plurielles qui réunit des enseignants-chercheurs en sciences humaines et sociales comme en littérature, langues et linguistique, de près de vingt laboratoires de l’université Sorbonne-Paris-Cité. Ce programme a pour objet d’analyser les défis de la diversité, les politiques du pluralisme et la gestion des crises dans les sociétés.

Litany in the Arts and Culture
The litany derives from ancient religious rites. Throughout the ages, however, it spread across many countries and became much more than a mere form of prayer. As has been demonstrated by our recent studies on the litanic forms in European poetry it is possible to reconstruct a cultural and literary map of European regions that traces the level of their participation in and contribution to the litanic tradition. The litanic verse is marked by religious semantics, but it also bears the mark of inter-European divisions, such as those experienced between and within various denominations, countries and nations, as well as the original folk cultures. Therefore, the litany may be of interest to scholars specializing in areas such the emergence of national identities and religious minorities, the crossover between art and religion as well as between music and poetry, the history of liturgy and spiritual life, the cultural exchanges between various nations.

Si les fondements historiques, culturels, politiques, environnementaux, tracent un trait d’union entre les îles du Sud-Ouest de l’océan, sont-ils, pour autant, suffisants à définir l’Indianocéanité ? Ces îles se singularisent aussi pard’importantes disparités, de développement, d’économie, d’aménagement, de participation aux réseaux mondiaux. L’aire géographique supposée être concernée pose également question. Ce colloque se propose de réunir, les 4 et 5 octobre 2018, à l’Université de La Réunion, des chercheurs travaillant sur l’océan Indien, afin de tenter de cerner les contours géographiques de l’Indianocéanie, son contenu et son importance géostratégique.

Ce colloque se propose de tenter une théorisation de la notion de spirituel afin d'en faire une catégorie scientifique utilisable dans le champ des sciences humaines. Depuis le poststructuralisme, la théorie, notamment littéraire, est devenue experte en matière d'analyse et de remise en question du soubassement idéologique de tout discours. Toutefois, cette « herméneutique du soupçon » (Ricoeur, 1975) se trouve démunie lorsqu'il s'agit d'élaborer une herméneutique « instauratrice de sens » (Ricoeur, 1965) permettant de penser l'humain au-delà de sa matérialité.

Ce numéro de Essachess examine les perspectives rhétoriques et/ou culturelles critiques sur la paix, la non-violence et le rôle du discours civique dans la société contemporaine. Il vise à couvrir le savoir scientifique qui se concentre principalement sur les 30 dernières années, y compris la période historique d’après 1989, qui a créé une démocratisation du discours à travers le monde, encore plus engagé dans la paix et les conflits dans les perspectives paradigmatiques sur la migration, le terrorisme, le communisme et le changement politique et social.

Masterclass and debate at the Université Lyon 2
L’université Lyon 2 organise une journée autour du site « Raconter la vie » (http://raconterlavie.fr/), lancé par Pierre Rosanvallon, et de la collection qui lui est associée aux éditions du Seuil. Cette journée, centrée sur La Barbe, récit de vie d’Omar Benlaala publié en janvier 2015 au Seuil, est constituée de deux rencontres : une « master class » plutôt destinée à un public d’étudiants formés en lettres appliquées, en édition et traduction, mais ouverte à tous ; un grand débat « Jeunesse et religions aujourd’hui » animé par deux spécialistes de l’ISERL (Institut supérieur d’étude des religions et de la laïcité), co-organisé par l’université Tous Âges. Ce débat est également ouvert à tous.

Call for papers - Ethnology, anthropology
La perspective interdisciplinaire, faisant dialoguer les approches littéraire et artistiques (arts du spectacle et arts visuels) avec les approches historiques et anthropologiques, permet de mettre en lumière la profonde cohérence des concepts, croyances et représentations qui concernent notre rapport à la mort, à l'incoscient et à la surréalité. Il s’agira d’examiner non pas tant l’influence des croyances et des représentations culturelles sur les arts et la littérature que leur profonde cohérence et leur interaction : en matière de fantômes, la littérature, le théâtre et les arts ne cessent d’alimenter et de reconfigurer la culture et les croyances d’une époque, le plus souvent selon des modalités ambiguës, la mise à distance ludique, critique ou ironique de ces représentations alternant avec une gamme très large d’émotions et d’affects. Cohérence et interaction que révèle l’étude conjointe des représentations artistiques et littéraires prises dans leur spécificité (historique, linguistique et esthétique) et des réalités culturelles et religieuses.

“Purity” and “Impurity” establish themselves as structural categories in both Islam and Judaism, embracing dimensions as diverse as the body, food, clothing and even space itself. The 2nd issue of the journal Hamsa will be devoted to this wide-ranging theme, seeking to obtain diachronic historical perspectives. To this effect, we aim to promote the analysis of interfaith relationships, in those instances where purity and impurity are projected in contacts with the Other. Those dimensions concern not only the minorities, but also affect Christianitas itself, through interiorization of these concepts and their application to minority communities (as is the case, for example, with limpeza de sangue - “cleanliness of blood”).

The Complex Influence of Orientalism on Scientific Discourses About Islam
Islamophobia as a form of racism has multiple faces and dimensions. One unexplored dimension is epistemic Islamophobia. Who speaks about and for Muslims is crucial because it shapes the definition of the problems, policies and priorities implemented by states, governments and institutions at both the national and global levels. This conference aims to explore the multiple questions that emerge when we examine knowledge production about Muslims and Islam. This conference will be an opportunity to focus on the influence of orientalism on scientific discourses about Islam and Muslims.
