Going beyond the limits: experiment with timbre in vocal and instrumental practice in modal music
This title, inspired by a Christopher Page article, points out a key question about the reenactment of medieval music: how to put in sound the vast repertoire that we have inherited. This question links the instruments and their music, as they immediately imply issues related to performance and organological knowledge. From the vocal point of view, it is even more of a burning issue as it requires for imagination and representation. Can experiment, practice and trial go beyond the limits imposed on us by the few material traces available ?

Sounds and voices in the Middle Ages

L’oralité, la performance, l’émotion, le paysage sonore, la vocalité permettent d’aborder l’homme d’une autre façon, peut-être plus anthropologique et plus sensorielle. Depuis quelques années, les travaux se multiplient pour toutes les époques mais l’époque médiévale n’est pas en reste et les projets de reconstitution sonore émergent pour Amiens, Avignon, Constantinople, Beowulf… La voix est centrale dans les sociétés médiévales où l’oralité permet aussi bien l’expression de soi, le négoce, le plaidoyer que le spectacle. D’une façon plus globale, tous les sons, quels qu’ils soient, construisent le paysage sonore de chaque société, à chaque instant. Cependant, leur caractère individuel, sensoriel et éphémère et l’absence d’enregistrement ont largement retardé leur étude. Il convient à présent d’étudier les traces de ce monde sonore disparu, au fil des trois séances de séminaire.

Transationalism at Court
Le projet de recherche MALMECC vise à questionner les principaux modèles historiographiques relatifs à la période médiévale, en se concentrant plus particulièrement sur le rôle de la musique dans la politique, la religion et les arts en milieu curial. Un de ces modèles est celui de la création de l’Etat-nation, ce qui conduit à considérer comme périphériques de larges aires géographiques qui jouèrent pourtant à l’époque un rôle culturel et identitaire de premier plan mais qui ont depuis disparu au sein de nations modernes, à l’image de l’ancienne principauté de Liège, aujourd’hui « divisée » entre Belgique et Pays-Bas, ou les régions gouvernées par la dynastie de Luxembourg au cours des années 1250-1450, qui incluaient des parties des actuelles France, Pologne, République tchèque, Allemagne, Belgique et Luxembourg.

Music and Late Medieval European Court Cultures
Late medieval European court cultures have traditionally been studied from a mono-disciplinary and national(ist) perspective. This has obscured much of the interplay of cultural performances that informed “courtly life”. Recent work by medievalists has routinely challenged this, but disciplinary boundaries remain strong. The MALMECC project therefore has been exploring late medieval court cultures and the role of sounds and music in courtly life across Europe in a transdisciplinary, team-based approach that brings together art history, general history, literary history, and music history. Team members explore the potential of transdisciplinary work by focusing on discrete subprojects within the chronological boundaries 1280-1450 linked to each other through shared research axes, e.g., the social condition of ecclesiastic(s at) courts, the transgenerational and transdynastic networks generated by genetic lineage and marriage, the performativity of courtly artefacts and physical as well as social spaces, and the social, linguistic and geographic mobility of court(ier)s.

Phenomena, practices and constructions in cultural history
Ce séminaire interdisciplinaire se propose de rassembler des jeunes chercheur·e·s et des chercheur·e.·s confirmé·e·s en histoire médiévale qui font du genre leur objet d’étude, ou qui l’utilisent comme un outil dans leurs recherches. Le but du séminaire est de se focaliser sur la réflexion identitaire et genrée au Moyen Âge. C’est pourquoi les approches d’histoire intellectuelle et culturelle ont été privilégiées. Néanmoins, les autres disciplines et les objets d’études mis en discussions seront également mobilisés.

The symposium aims to bring together researchers working on aspects of mendicant orders traditionally considered as “marginal”, be it in geographical, topographical, gendered or historical terms, in order to go beyond the artificial construct of centrality and marginality, and get a fuller understanding of the impact of the mendicants on all levels of medieval society across Europe.

L’objectif de ce colloque est de porter la réflexion sur les dynamiques à l’œuvre dans les phases transitoires où des diocèses sont créés, redécoupés, absorbés ou disloqués. Nous serons particulièrement attentifs aux modalités de construction et de reconfiguration territoriales, ainsi qu’aux pratiques socio-spatiales qui nourrissent une identité. Dioceses in interim - the age of episcopal vacation (France-Germany, 10th-13th centuries)
Le temps de la vacance épiscopale (France et Allemagne, Xe‒XIIIe siècle)
La mort de l’évêque laisse sa fonction vacante, pour quelques jours ou quelques semaines, parfois même pour des années. D’autres causes ‒ expulsion, suspension ou démission ‒ ont le même effet. La recherche accorde trop peu d’attention à cette période, appelée « intérim » dans le droit canonique, tout comme aux étapes qui mènent à l’installation du nouvel évêque, de son élection à son investiture. L’objectif du colloque est de combler cette lacune en étudiant ce temps particulier dans une perspective d’ensemble. Son intérêt n’est pas concentré sur la personne de l’évêque ayant cessé ses fonctions ou sur son successeur, mais plutôt sur le diocèse et les groupes qui pèsent sur sa destinée.

Venetian Commodities, 13th-16th centuries
What are "Venetian" commodities? More than any other medieval or early modern city, Venice lived off of the trade of portable goods. In addition to trading foreign imports, the city also engaged in intense local production, manufacturing high quality glass, crystal, cloth, metal, enamel, leather, and ceramic objects, characterized by their exceedingly rich forms and complex production processes. Today, these objects are scattered in collections throughout the world, but little remains in Venice itself. In individual instances, it is often difficult to tell whether the objects in question were actually made in Venice or if they originated in Byzantine, Islamic, or other European contexts.

Heraldry in the Medieval City – The Case of Italy in the European Context
A visitor passing through Italy is surprised by the abundance of coats of arms that still decorate the palaces and public monuments of its cities. Relatively undisturbed by the tides of history that destroyed a lot of Europe's heraldic heritage, in the Italian cities this heritage is still alive and well. While the development of heraldic signs occasionally caught the eye of historians and art historians, they have never done justice to the multitude and diversity of the existing sources. Recently, however, research has taken an interest in the subject with renewed vigour and approaches, especially in the case of Italy. The aim of this conference is to establish the current state of research and to advance the subject by linking more closely the history of heraldic communication and the history of cities. To do so, the Italian example shall be put into a European perspective.

Images and Liturgy in Portugal in the Middle Age
The seminar Images and Liturgy in Portugal in the Middle Age, organized by the CEAACP Multidisciplinary Group Study in Arts (University of Coimbra), in partnership with the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists / Carmo Archaeological Museum, is part of the set of project initiatives of Carla Varela Fernandes’ Postdoc (Sculptures of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries in collections of Portuguese museums. An imperative approach to a broader knowledge of the scientific reality). It aims the presentation and discussion of recent studies and reflections on works of Romanic and Gothic art existing in Portugal. It is intended to address the medieval images as part of the liturgical rituals and the buildings they were designed for. On the other hand, we’ll try to provide advances in the knowledge on the means as an iconographic innovation or aesthetic generated at a given location "moves" and appears in other geographies, serving similar purposes.

Nordic and Germanic Space
The Kiel Treaty, signed on 14 January 1814, marks a milestone in European and Scandinavian history as it ended armed conflicts between the realms of Sweden and Denmark. In order to celebrate its 200th anniversary, this conference will focus on national propaganda and representations of power through the representation of the people. The period under study spans from the 14th century to 1814. It includes the Scandinavian realms’ stabilization as well as the emergence of a national sentiment centered on the homeland, the ruler or the reigning power and ends with the emergence of nationalism in Europe.

Il se propose de relancer la réflexion sur la question des appartenances et identités sur le long terme (Moyen Âge et Temps modernes), avant les grandes recompositions produites par les révolutions de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, et dans un territoire correspondant à la France septentrionale, la Belgique, les Pays-Bas et le Luxembourg actuels. Comment les identités se forment-elles et se transforment-elles ? Comment survivent-elles ou disparaissent-elles, par voie de radicalisation ou d'adaptation ? -

L'essentiel des chercheurs de Jacov travaillent sur le crédit et le petit crédit rural. La nouveauté est l'étude de la documentation hébraïque jusque là inconnue (projets Geniza européenne et Jacov). Notre but est de « désenclaver » l'histoire des juifs à travers l'histoire économique, d'éclairer la question du « crédit juif rural », véritable lieu commun. Cette année, les travaux portent sur l'étude des carnets personnels et comptabilités des marchands du XIVe siècle. -

Les frontières politiques en Europe au bas Moyen Âge : naissance et intensification – représentations symboliques – réflexions théoriques
Pour la plupart du temps, les frontières sont invisibles. Et pourtant, ces frontières invisibles représentent, à l’époque médiévale comme à la nôtre, des facteurs d’influence sur les actions des différents acteurs politiques. Lors d'un colloque organisé par l'université de Münster (RFA) et l'Institut historique allemand à Paris, nous discuterons dans une perspective comparative le rôle des frontières au bas Moyen Âge. Au centre du débat se trouvent les identités politiques de l'Europe centrale et occidentale.
