Rituel et image : textiles et révélation du sacré
Ces journées d’études entendent interroger la participation des textiles – réels ou fictifs, matériels, représentés ou feints – dans la manifestation du sacré, compris dans une acceptation large au-delà de la sphère strictement religieuse. La diversité de leurs formes, la pluralité de leurs fonctions et leur potentiel métaphorique seront au cœur de la réflexion.

Image, Cartography, Knowledge of the City after the Council of Trent ("In_bo" vol. 12, no. 16)
Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

Inscriptions in Italian tridentine decors
La dépréciation du recours aux inscriptions par la théorie artistique du Cinquecento se voit tempérée lors du Concile de Trente par la volonté ecclésiastique d'un encadrement des pratiques de l'image. Pour comprendre les enjeux et explorer les modalités de cette revalorisation momentanée du rôle didactique de l'écrit au sein de l'image, cette journée d'étude sera consacrée à l’importance, à la place, aux types, aux formes et enfin aux fonctions des inscriptions et écritures qui font retour en nombre dans les décors religieux monumentaux d’Italie pendant la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle et au début du XVIIe siècle.

State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces in Europe (14th-16th c.)

From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, European monarchies saw a gradual centralisation of power. This was accompanied by the dissemination of political ideas that contributed to the making of a new image of the prince, which relied on visual instruments to assert and construct the prince’s sovereign power. Royal and princely residences with their designated state-rooms were at the centre of this phenomenon. Their decors, particularly during ceremonies, reflected political interests and ambitions that were essential to the image of the prince. By placing a particular emphasis on the decor of those state-rooms, this workshop aims to increase our insights into the relations between the architecture, decoration, and rituals of monarchical power in state-rooms from the late middle ages to the beginning of the early modern period.

Heraldry in the Medieval City – The Case of Italy in the European Context
A visitor passing through Italy is surprised by the abundance of coats of arms that still decorate the palaces and public monuments of its cities. Relatively undisturbed by the tides of history that destroyed a lot of Europe's heraldic heritage, in the Italian cities this heritage is still alive and well. While the development of heraldic signs occasionally caught the eye of historians and art historians, they have never done justice to the multitude and diversity of the existing sources. Recently, however, research has taken an interest in the subject with renewed vigour and approaches, especially in the case of Italy. The aim of this conference is to establish the current state of research and to advance the subject by linking more closely the history of heraldic communication and the history of cities. To do so, the Italian example shall be put into a European perspective.

Around the body: from idea to intervention (16th-17th centuries)
Depuis la fin des années 1990, la représentation du corps humain a été envisagée sous des approches pluridisciplinaires visant à montrer l’évolution de la perception que l’on a pu lui accorder au fil des siècles. L’exemple le plus significatif est L’histoire du corps (Seuil, 2005) telle que l’ont envisagée Alain Corbin, Jean-Jacques Courtine, Georges Vigarello et leurs collaborateurs. Auparavant, Nadeije Laneyrie-Dagen, dans L’Invention du corps (Flammarion, 1997) avait mis en évidence les enjeux artistiques et culturels liés à la création du corps peint, codifiée par les artistes des XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Tout en tenant compte du contexte historique et culturel, ce colloque se propose de poursuivre les réflexions de ces deux ouvrages. Il s’agira de mettre en évidence la façon dont les artistes ont représenté le corps humain en restant fidèles à la réalité ou, au contraire, en imaginant de nouvelles formes qui vont de l’idéalisation à la caricature.

Between sky and earth, knowledge and cosmography in the Renaissance
Né dans le sillage humaniste, le projet cosmographique a connu son apogée et son déclin en Europe entre le XVIe siècle et la première moitié du XVIIe siècle. Pendant sa courte existence, ce projet a cherché à décrire la totalité et la diversité du monde à partir des cercles de la sphère céleste. Pour ce faire, les cosmographes ont mobilisé différents savoirs, traditions et pratiques. Cette journée d’étude propose d’interroger cette hétérogénéité dans son contexte historique de production à partir de quatre axes thématiques : acteurs et lieux de production ; articulation de savoirs ; enjeux politiques de la représentation du monde ; rayonnements de la cosmographie.

Face au regain d’intérêt manifesté autour du thème de l’ornement depuis quelques années, l’Institut royal du patrimoine artistique (IRPA) et les départements d’histoire de l’art et d’archéologie de l’Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) et des Facultés universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix de Namur (FUNDP) organisent une série de colloques consacrés aux questions d’ornements aux temps modernes. Suite aux deux premières rencontres centrées sur l’architecture et la peinture et les arts graphiques, le dernier colloque de cette série aura lieu ces 16 et 17 février 2012 à l’IRPA à Bruxelles et sera consacré à l’ornement dans son rapport avec les arts du relief. À travers ce champ particulier, il s'agira d’engager une réflexion sur des problématiques d’ordre épistémologique et historiographique, théorique et méthodologique, nourries par des études de cas particuliers.
