  Cosmopolitanism revisited

  Comparative Perspectives on Urban Diversity from the Gulf and Beyond

  This conference aims to revisit the notion of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities and other regional areas from a comparative perspective. It will be a unique opportunity for scholars of the Gulf and other world regions to engage with cosmopolitanism or otherwise probe the intersection of global studies, urban studies and migration studies from a range of disciplines. More specifically, panels will be organized around the following research themes:“cosmopolitan canopy”, cosmopolitanism in theoretical and comparative perspectives, new geographies of cosmopolitanism in Gulf cities.

  Refugees in the City

  The Urban Studies Seminar is a joint activity of the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) and 'Europe in the Middle East - The Middle East in Europe' (EUME), a research program at the Forum Transregionale Studien, Berlin. It is part of the EUME research field, «Cities Compared». The seminar aims at presenting and discussing ongoing research of scholars working on cities in regions with Muslim societies with an emphasis on Urban Studies in a comparative perspective.

  Gender, migration and citizenship

  Revisiting Southeast Asian international marriages

  In the current context of economic crisis, international marriages and family-related migrations are becoming increasingly restricted in many developed countries in the Global North, whereas countries in the Global South are adopting measures to protect local women from the trafficking and sexual exploitation that may arise from international marriages. These regulations of the “marriage market” pose challenges to single men and women looking for partners of a different nationality and for bi-national couples pursuing a family-formation project. For those who successfully immigrated in the country of their partner, social incorporation and cohesive family life are the next challenges in line. To shed light on the multi-faceted life of marriage migrants in the current age of economic crisis and increased border controls, this edited volume will take a closer look at Southeast Asian international marriages. It will also attempt to capture the dynamics of the interaction among macro-, meso- and microsociological factors that shape migrants’ trajectories, while taking into account their subjectivities and agency.

  Révoltes et transitions dans le monde arabe : vers un nouvel agenda urbain ?

  Ce colloque international vise à débattre de la dimension urbaine des grands changements qui touchent actuellement le monde arabe, depuis les origines des épisodes révolutionnaires de 2011 jusqu’aux expériences actuelles de démocratisation, en passant par les phases de transition politique et de crise économique et sociale plus ou moins longues dans lesquelles les États sont encore pris. L’objectif est de (re)considérer les processus d’urbanisation et les pratiques urbaines à l’aune de l’actualité politique, économique et sociale particulièrement brûlante dans la région depuis le début de la décennie. Organisé par le pôle « Ville et développement durable » du CEDEJ, ce colloque s’inscrit également dans deux programmes de recherche en cours : ville durable au sud de la Méditerranée (projet MeRsi), cofinancé par l’Agence universitaire de la francophonie-Bureau Moyen-Orient et le CEDEJ ; géographies de la mondialisation, émergence d’un système régional Moyen-Orient (SYSREMO), financé par l'Agence nationale de la recherche, France (ESO-Rennes).

  La capitale syrienne se transforme : impact de la mondialisation et des migrations, mutations spatiales et sociales, extension urbaine rapide, évolution des marchés fonciers et immobiliers,nouveaux projets urbains et plans d’urbanisme, apparition de quartiers neufs, progression de l’informel, renouvellement des centralités commerciales… Ce séminaire propose d’interrogerles nouveaux visages de Damas. Comment la ville se fabrique-t-elle aujourd’hui ? Par quels mécanismes les évolutions économiques, démographiques et sociales ont-elle un effet surl’espace et inversement? Assiste-t-on à l’émergence d’une métropole régionale, avec ses atouts et ses difficultés ?
