Mountains and New Ways of Building Knowledge

Contemporary societies have to tackle “wicked” problems, characterized by their complexity, a diversity of views about these problems, as well as a context of uncertainty. Increasingly, the thinking goes that such problems cannot be properly understood by researchers from a single discipline or even by researchers alone. Therefore, the latter are encouraged to find collaborators across disciplinary and academic boundaries and to find and implement « new » ways of building and spreading knowledge. This call is seeking articles that will allow us to question – through and from the mountains – the forms, processes and effects of those “new” ways of building knowledge. It also aims to encourage the reflexivity of researchers who contribute to this evolution and question the how and the why of a fondness for/reliance on Alpine research.

    Study days - Geography

Searching for places, places of knowledge

Identifying and indexing research grounds in scientific texts

This day focuses on the challenges, methods and research questions associated with the recognition of geographical entities in the texts of scientific publications. The first session looks back at land-related research. Overgrazed lands, remote science, visibility of research sites and the local dimension of some sites will be discussed. The second session will present the methodologies for automatically detecting research fields in scientific texts. The third session will show the interest of these methods and the challenge of applying them to large corpora of scientific texts, taking the example of the ISTEX and OpenEdition corpora. The fourth session will present projects proposing interactive keyword and toponym exploration solutions for archaeology and geography journals.

    Seminar - Geography

    Writing the geographic

    1914-1918. The war in maps

The 1rst World War dramatically affected societies and territories, as well as personal lives and all forms of culture, in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The 1914-1918 conflict had in all respects a foundational nature. On the occasion of the 1rst World War commemorations, and in connection with the exhibition, "Summer of '14: The Last Days of the Old World", which will be held at the French National Library from March 25 to August 3, the French Committee of Cartography organizes a conference specifically dedicated to the role of cartography in the war, according to three main issues : the role of maps during the preparation of the war, the use of maps on the theatre of military operations, the importance of the map in a civil society during the war.

Praxeologies and the ethics of social geography

Experiences and cross perspectives of researchers
