A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History
PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments. Image, Cartography, Knowledge of the City after the Council of Trent ("In_bo" vol. 12, no. 16)
Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

The Norman worlds in geographical knowledge and travel accounts (9th-16th centuries)
Cet appel à contirbution de la revue Tabularia est dédié à un dossier thématique sur la littérature géographique et aux récits de voyages relatifs aux mondes normands médiévaux. Ce dossier envisage une chronologie large, de la période carolingienne aux « Grandes découvertes (IXe-XVIe siècle) et une gamme étendue de textes : itinéraires, récits ou guides de voyages ou de pèlerinages, descriptions géographiques incluses dans des œuvres narratives (chroniques, hagiographies, sagas…), littérature encyclopédique, récits de croisades, relations d’ambassadeurs et de missionnaires, guide et correspondances des marchands, récits d’explorateurs, voire même de voyageurs imaginaires. L’objectif est de s’interroger sur la part des connaissances nouvelles et celle des emprunts, la circulation des savoirs géographiques, leur mise en œuvre dans les textes, la mise en ordre des connaissances, les intentions qui guident les auteurs ou les commanditaires, les images véhiculées par les textes, les illustrations (cartes, miniatures…) qui les accompagnent éventuellement.

Urgent issue of The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge
This special issue, Tilting, seeks to take up themes that have animated the Blackwood’s program and mandate throughout the last several years: questions of connectivity, the challenges of public and private space, community and/in isolation; imperatives to re-structure modes and methodologies of care, including revaluing care work, confronting collective care responsibilities within colonial and capitalist structures, and engaging with the infrastructures, aesthetics, contestations, and radical possibilities of mutual aid; responses to the precarization of art, labour, and life; interest in what modes of knowledge production, circulation, and re-distribution are vital to us now, and how these networks might take new form. These urgencies continue to drive Blackwood programming (and this forthcoming publication), supporting and activating artists, curators, and writers who incite us to be responsive, critical, and answerable.

Soldiers, prisoners and converts between permeable borders in the Mare Nostrum (16th-18th centuries)
The COST Action “Islamic Legacy: Narratives East, West, South, North of the Mediterranean (1350-1750)” [CA 18129] is launching a call for a conference “Soldiers, prisoners and converts between permeable borders in the Mare Nostrum (16th-18th centuries)”. The event that we are disseminating is being organised within this project, which as the purpose to provide a transnational and interdisciplinary approach capable of overcoming the segmentation that currently characterizes the study of relations between Christianity and Islam in late medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean. We aim to create a network that will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of past relations between Christianity and Islam in the European context through the addressing of three main research problems: otherness, migration and borders.

Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) Summer School 2020
The Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (KISMIF) Conference 2020 will be preceded by a Summer School entitled ‘Not Just Holidays in the Sun’ on 7 July 2020 in Rivoli Municipal Theatre of Porto. The Summer School will offer an opportunity for all interested persons, including those participating in the Conference, to attend workshops directed by specialists in their fields. Our KISMIF Summer School program invites students who are interested in, or currently using, DIY cultures in their research to join us for an exciting and innovative one-day summer school program. The goal of the one-day program will be to encourage discussion and experimentation in the documentation of DIY cultures as much as it will be to encourage a new generation of DIY academics (Punk Ethnographers!) to experiment with digital cinema and performance in their research practices.

Jazz, globalisation and communities
Jazz, globalisation and communities
Now a quasi-universal musical form, present in all five continents, jazz developed as a result of a complex process of cultural exchange, making it a true product of cultural globalisation. Typical of the success of the « glocal », as defined by Robertson in 1994, between the « resilience of the local and global consciousness », jazz has generated new communities of amateur and professional musicians around a strong local musical tradition, thanks first to the presence of foreign musicians, and second to the global nature of jazz itself. The aim of this one-day conference will be to explore the local and global dimensions of these jazz communities from the point of the musicians, the audiences and media, in order to understand how jazz, the quintessentially global musical genre, creates not just local and global communities, but also the links between these very communities.

For a poetics of river-cities of the world, between eco-criticism and geo-criticism
Deux grands courants critiques modernes se partagent aujourd’hui l’étude des lieux, joignant études géographiques et études littéraires : d’une part, la géocritique ainsi que la géopoétique, d’autre part, l’écocritique ainsi que l’écopoétique. Nous souhaitons engager la réflexion sur un espace qui nous paraît éminemment riche de potentialités d’étude : les villes-fleuves du monde. Il s’agit avant tout de choisir une ville-fleuve du monde et d’en exprimer la réalité voire l’essence et même la substance poétique jaillie de son réel ou de notre imaginaire, quel que soit le continent, pour montrer la diversalité que ces villes-fleuves représentent.

Inscription - letters and literature (11th-16th century)
Inscrire n’est pas écrire. Comme en témoignent de récentes publications, les inscriptions médiévales – objets historiques, linguistiques, artistiques – sont à la confluence de plusieurs champs disciplinaires qui rejoignent l’épigraphie. Or, c’est en tant qu’objet littéraire, enrichi de tous ces champs, que nous voudrions les questionner : quelle place les inscriptions occupent-elles dans la littérature médiévale ? Quels rôles y jouent-elles ? Sont-elles représentées dans les manuscrits et les premiers imprimés ? Dans quelle mesure les textes littéraires circulent-ils par leur intermédiaire ?

Korean cinema: construction and deconstruction, 1919-2019
Alors que Bong Joon-ho vient de remporter la Palme d’or du 72e Festival de Cannes, le cinéma coréen fête son centenaire, invitant à s’interroger sur son évolution historique. En effet, que reste-t-il comme patrimoine cinématographique dans ce pays scindé en deux depuis 1948 ? Si l’année France-Corée, en 2015, avait été l’occasion de mener des réflexions sur le cinéma coréen dans ses formes, ses représentations et sa diffusion – notamment à travers le colloque international « Regards croisés sur le cinéma coréen » –, son centenaire incite à se pencher sur son histoire et son actualité. La journée d’études « Cinéma coréen : construction et déconstruction, 1919-2019 » cherche à son tour à explorer le cinéma sud-coréen contemporain en le mettant en regard avec sa propre histoire et celle de son pays. Cette indispensable introspection se double également ici d’une analyse réflexive du cinéma sud-coréen en dehors de ses frontières et des moyens par lesquels il atteint un public international.

Ideas and ideologies in Europe
En cette année d’élections européennes, il semble pertinent de revenir sur les substrats théoriques de l’Europe. En effet, classiquement, l’Europe fait l’objet de propositions, de recommandations et de jugements sur son organisation, que l’on peut regrouper sous le terme d’idées ou d’idéologies. Formulées dans des contextes divers, ces prescriptions renvoient à des modèles normatifs, moraux ou esthétiques, auxquels la réalité européenne serait censée se conformer. Partant du postulat que ces normes jouent un rôle dans la façon dont les acteurs sociaux se projettent et s’engagent vis-à-vis de l’« Europe », cette journée d’étude propose de s’intéresser aux idées et aux idéologies associées à l’Europe, à leur contenu comme aux conditions sociales de leur production et de leur utilisation, ainsi qu’à leur mise en œuvre.

La forêt, à travers les nombreux biens et services qu’elle génère, constitue une ressource renouvelable dotée d’atouts majeurs dans le contexte d’une transition écologique encourageant une « bioéconomie » en substitution de matériaux ou d’énergies utilisant le carbone fossile. Les changements climatiques, environnementaux, sociaux, exposent cette ressource à de nombreuses incertitudes ; la forêt se trouve confrontée à de nouvelles questions et défis à relever. Dans un contexte où les préoccupations sociales, politiques, économiques, environnementales concernant la forêt et la filière-bois sont fortes au niveau national, européen, international, les propositions de textes attendues pour ce numéro thématique sont largement ouvertes aux réflexions inter- et transdisciplinaires, pouvant articuler recherche et action, dès lors qu’elles cherchent à créer un espace de discussion et de rencontre entre des travaux, des angles d’attaque et des pratiques.

It focuses on the polysemous and discussed term ‘border’. For its second issue, the authors are invited to write on the theme “Imagining the Border”.

Urbi and orbi. Reading cities, living literature
Notre rencontre a pour objet la réflexion sur les villes européennes et autres, ces loci memoriae que tant d‘écrivains ont bâtis dans leurs livres (où nous nous promenons avec plaisir ou inquiétude, dans les pas de Baudelaire, de Joyce, de Modiano, de Michel Butor, de Nicolas Bouvier, de Sebald, de Lilar, de Syvie Germain, de Pessoa, de Lobo Antunes, et de combien d’autres), en quête maintenant de nouveaux territoires de lisibilité, où les espaces de mémoire coexistent avec ceux de l’innovation. On peut parler de la ville « en termes de signification »; le numérique, à présent, trace de nouvelles cartographies littéraires urbaines européennes qu’il s’impose de creuser. Cette rencontre, nous l’espérons, nous permettra de mieux mettre en évidence les différentes contributions à l’œuvre, en ce moment, pour l’édification d’une nouvelle histoire littéraire, européenne, et dont la forme et la figure de la « ville univers » serait une des clefs de voûte.

Saigon, an eyewitness of history through archives
À travers une histoire riche en rebondissements au cours du XXe siècle, Saigon présente de nombreuses facettes inédites qu’il convient de mettre à jour et d’analyser. Grâce aux archives, les chercheurs redécouvrent aujourd’hui celle que l’on nommait autrefois « la perle de l’Extrême-Orient » et mesurent à la fois l’évolution et l’expansion de la ville, d’une situation coloniale à la cité-province actuelle. Pour suivre pas à pas ces transformations sociales, politiques, économiques, une très riche documentation est désormais disponible principalement en France, au Viêt-Nam et aux États-Unis. Ces sources constituent en effet le matériau de base pour entreprendre une recherche historique, géographique et plus largementen sciences sociales. Archives administratives, dessins, plans etcartes, photothèque, images fixes ou animées, institutionnelles ou privées, elles sont nombreuses et souvent dispersées. Elles constitueront le coeur de cette journée d’étude sur Saigon.

In the premodern world, geographical knowledge was heavily influenced by religious ideas and beliefs. The conference seeks to analyse, how the religious character of geographic knowledge in the period from ca. 1150 to 1550 lingered on in classical as well as new forms of (re)presenting geography.

Cultural encounters in the nineteenth century
The exhibition The Dutch in Paris, which was on show in the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and in the Petit Palais, Paris during the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 respectively, aimed to visualize the artistic exchange between Dutch and French artists between 1789 and 1914. As part of a larger research project, set up by the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History, the exhibition generated so much response that ESNA, in collaboration with the RKD and NWO, decided to organize an international conference on the subject, focusing specifically on international as well as national and local points of encounter and how they facilitated artistic exchange.

Cartographies of Southeast Europe
The Association international d’études du sud-est européen is happy to invite you to the 12th Congress of South-East European Studies, taking place in Bucharest, from the 2nd to the 7th of September 2019. One of the conference panels, organized by Robert Born (Leipzig) and Marian Coman (Bucharest), is dedicated to the cartographic history of south-eastern Europe. Proposals for individual papers are welcome on various aspects of the history of south-eastern Europe cartography, from the Ottoman period to the post-communist era. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Renaissance and Early Modern maps of the Ottoman Empire, Enlightenment cartographies of Eastern Europe, the birth of national cartography, war and peace cartographies, historical and propaganda maps, national and local surveys, Cold War cartographies.

"Sciences du jeu" journal issue 13
La revue Sciences du jeu consacrera un numéro spécial au jeu de société, intitulé « Le jeu de société : pratiques, produits et industries ». Elle sollicite des articles de sciences sociales éclairant les enjeux sociaux, économiques et historiques des industries, des intermédiaires et des publics de ces jeux. Les contributions peuvent s’intéresser tout autant aux jeux traditionnels qu’aux jeux contemporains, issus du secteur « de masse » ou « de niche », qu’il s’agisse de pratiques enfantines, familiales ou exclusivement entre adultes, occasionnelles ou fréquentes. Cinq axes seront privilégiés : le secteur du jeu de société ; les transformations éditoriales du jeu de société ; les intermédiaires du jeu de société ; évolution des jeux et des joueurs ; pratiques et usages du jeu de société.

Envisioning Latin America: Power and Representation in audiovisual (re)productions
This issue seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources.
