A global history of Trieste in the 18th century
Sources, methods and scales of analysis
À l’occasion de la célébration du tricentenaire de la fondation du port franc de Trieste, cette journée d’étude a pour objectif de rassembler des chercheurs confirmés et doctorants travaillant sur les sources de l’histoire de Trieste. Elle vise à faire à la fois un état des lieux des fonds publics et privés disponibles à Trieste et à Vienne, ainsi qu’en Europe et en Amérique du Nord, et de confronter des approches propres à des champs historiographiques nationaux et disciplinaires variés. Par le croisement de ces fonds et la démarche interdisciplinaire qui l’accompagne, nous souhaitons interroger les concepts d’histoire globale et d’histoire connectée et proposer une nouvelle histoire collective de Trieste interrogeant ses sources et ses échelles d’analyse.

Black presence in Early Modern France
Lumières is a journal published by the Presses Universitaires de Bordeaux for the University Bordeaux Montaigne. Its 34th issue, scheduled for June 2020, will focus on Black minorities in France during the Early Modern period. Black studies are far from being a novelty in France, with several in-depth studies already published over the past ten years. Nevertheless, these researches tend to focus always on the same period (the pre-revolutionary years)and the same cities (Paris or Bordeaux). The 34th issue of the Lumières journal aims to provide other points of view and open up research opportunities: therefore, it will put forward new studies in order to show how diverse the experiences of Black people living in France during the Early Modern period were.

Construction Techniques and Writings on Architecture in Renaissance and Early Modern Europe
Thematic issue of the journal Opus Incertum (Florence University Press)
The 2020 issue of the open access journal Opus Incertum (Florence University Press) aims to examine, through selected case studies, the complex relationship between construction practices and architectural writings in Renaissance and early modern Europe. Situated at the crossroads of several disciplines (architectural history, history of science and technology, history of literature), the subject can be approached from different perspectives. To begin with, confrontations of texts on construction techniques with the material realities of extant buildings may reveal, for specific contexts, to what extent these texts operated as vehicles for the transmission of technical know-how, and how much weight they gave to topoi borrowed from ancient authors.

Architecture and society - from the Ancien Régime to the Restoration
François Joseph Bélanger colloquium
Construire une maison de plaisance en trois mois : ce pari fou – et réussi – entre la reine Marie-Antoinette et son beau-frère le comte d’Artois a marqué la carrière de François Joseph Bélanger. Avec ce coup d’éclat se dessine le portrait d’un architecte à la mode, chef d’orchestre des plaisirs de l’Ancien Régime, qui intéresse depuis longtemps les historiens. Dès 1930, Bélanger bénéficie d’une monographie grâce au travail documentaire minutieux de Jean Stern. Depuis les années 1970, les recherches se poursuivent avec des études plus spécifiques consacrées à son activité au service du prince, à ses demeures privées, à son rôle de paysagiste et à ses bâtiments publics. Cette riche historiographie n’épuise pas pour autant le sujet. Parmi les perspectives fructueuses, il convient notamment d’approfondir le travail de l’architecte au quotidien, ses relations avec les dessinateurs et les artisans, ses réseaux et les mécanismes de la commande, ses stratégies de carrière, son éclectisme, sa maîtrise technique ou encore ses écrits sur ses confrères et le soin apporté à la diffusion de son œuvre.

À travers la problématique de la sortie en ville, ce colloque vise à questionner, de manière interdisciplinaire, la contribution des pratiques et activités récréatives au façonnement des espaces urbains depuis le XVIIIe siècle.

Urban sociability and cosmopolitanism in the Enlightenment
Ce colloque international voudrait explorer Paris au XVIIIe siècle en interrogeant les populations qui l’ont faite, dans ses murs et au-delà, au croisement des espaces, des institutions et des savoirs qu’elles ont traversés. Au fondement de cette réflexion – le titre de l’événement ne s’en cache pas – se trouve Le peuple de Paris (1981) de Daniel Roche, qui fut l’une des contributions les plus importantes sur l’histoire sociale et culturelle de la capitale au siècle des Lumières. La pluralité des cultures et des identités sociales des peuples de Paris conférait à la ville, et au livre qui la parcourait d’une toute nouvelle manière, un caractère spécifique et distinctif appelant, entre autres choses, à une nouvelle interprétation des origines de la Révolution.

La contribution décisive de La Font de Saint-Yenne à la naissance et à l’affirmation d’un nouveau type de discours sur l’art au milieu du XVIIIe siècle n’est certainement plus à prouver. Même s’il participe à sa manière au jeu des Salons en investissant lui aussi des supports et des genres, lettres, dialogues d’idées, favorisant l’expression et l’échange d’opinions, l’auteur des Réflexions se démarque pourtant rapidement par son ambition de faire œuvre.

Receptions, reinterpretations, rewriting (1789-1804)
Cette journée d'études a pour but d’explorer un champ encore trop peu étudié par les historiens : l’exécution de la loi. En effet, les actes du pouvoir exécutif, entre 1789 et 1804, n’ont jamais été de simples reproductions neutres de la loi : toute reformulation de la loi est de fait une interprétation, dès lors qu’il s’agit de l’expliquer aux fonctionnaires ou aux citoyens. C’est cette latitude dans l’interprétation de la loi qu’il conviendra d’examiner afin de mesurer la manière dont l’exécutif s’emploie à « refaire » la loi, dès lors qu’il la met en mots et en actes. Il s’agira plus particulièrement de s’intéresser aux mots employés par le pouvoir exécutif pour faire appliquer la loi, afin de mettre en évidence les éventuelles discordances par rapport à ceux utilisés par le pouvoir législatif dans le texte même de la loi.

Urban spaces, mobility and "citadinité" in the Mediterranean cities (14th to 18th century)
The panel focuses on mobility and insertion in the cities of the Mediterranean area, during the early modern age. Since the Ancient times, Mediterranean cities are centers for commercial and cultural exchanges, and crossroads of migratory streams. These "sedimented" cities have a long tradition of multi-cultural society and reception of foreigners while remaining, to this day pivotal centers for international circulation and migration, and gateways to Europe.

"Unsocial sociability" and socio-cultural tensions in Enlightenment Britain
Dans le cadre du projet international HIDISOC (History and Dictionary of Sociability in Britain (1660-1832)), ce colloque interdisciplinaire a pour objectif de comprendre les mécanismes qui mettent à l’épreuve la sociabilité et de chercher les manifestations de « l’insociable sociabilité » des hommes (Kant). Il s’agira d’identifier les tensions culturelles et sociales et les formes de résistance qui définissent la sociabilité britannique au cours du long XVIIIe siècle.

À travers la problématique de l’arrivée en ville, de ses modalités, des impressions et des représentations qui en découlent, le colloque questionnera les rapports entre mobilité, culture et identité métropolitaine qui sont au cœur de ce projet de recherche. Nous chercherons à interroger les modalités d’entrée en ville, en fonction de l’évolution des limites urbaines et des moyens de transport, tant sur le plan de l’aménagement des espaces traversés qu’au prisme du regard de celui / celle qui se déplace.

Workers and Mobility in the Early Modern Cities: Actors and Strategies
The important changes that are currently taking place in the job market have prompted historical consideration of the issues of job insecurity and flexibility. Far from being exclusive to modern day societies, a mobile workforce - above all between sectors - was also a feature of the early modern world of work. The work of charitable organisations and confraternities, individual and family strategies, career paths, contracts and work agreements are all fields in which traces of this mobility are visible and it was seen not so much, or not solely, as a chance for social betterment but also and above all as a unstable state. The goal of this workshop is to contribute to an analysis of certain more specific labour mobility issues in the light of the historical debate which has taken place over recent years.

1660-1688: A Landmark Period in the History of British Sociability
1660-1688: un tournant dans l’histoire de la sociabilité britannique ?
Dans le cadre du projet interdisciplinaire « History and Dictionary of Sociability in Britain (1660-1832) », la journée d’étude du 14 novembre 2014, organisée par PLEIADE (université Paris 13) et HCTI (UBO Brest) vise à étudier la période de la Restauration à la Glorieuse Révolution (1660-1688) comme une période charnière dans l’histoire de la sociabilité britannique, portant en elle les germes d’une sociabilité nouvelle. Il s’agira d’identifier les facteurs politiques, sociaux, économiques et culturels propices à l’essor de la sociabilité britannique et d’interroger le caractère novateur des formes, des pratiques et des vecteurs de cette sociabilité.

Opening libraries up to the public
La Bibliothèque municipale d’Orléans célèbre cette année le trois-centième anniversaire de son ouverture au public grâce au don du juriste Guillaume Prousteau. L’une des premières en France destinée au public, cette bibliothèque a connu tous les développements de la lecture publique, du lectorat lettré à la fréquentation démocratique, des livres d’étude aux supports électroniques. Pour célébrer ce tricentenaire, nous désirons établir un bilan d’étape des nombreux travaux consacrés depuis une vingtaine d’années aux divers aspects de l’ouverture des bibliothèques au public qu’il s’agisse de ses instruments, des relations avec les cadres urbains, ou encore de l’attente des publics. Le colloque international que nous organisons à l’université d’Orléans du 16 au 18 octobre 2014 en collaboration avec la médiathèque d’Orléans et avec le soutien des autorités locales et régionales vise à réunir des études de cas divers, français et étrangers, qui développeront les problématiques de cette « publicité » particulière de la lecture.

Politics, aesthetics and topography in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century city
This two-day conference brings together young researchers to explore the city and its ideologies from a fully interdisciplinary perspective. Persistent Spaces combines approaches from various fields in order to create a dialogue between disciplines and methodologies. This conference also seeks to establish a dialogue between the 18th and the 19th centuries, in turns highlighting the individual specificities of these two periods, and accounting for the echoes, continuities and breaks between them.

Persistent Spaces: politics, aesthetics and topography in the XVIIIth and XIXth-century City
Our two-day postgraduate conference will explore the evolving configurations of the urban space from the Enlightenment to the late 19th-century. We will consider the accumulating and interpenetrating layers that make up the 18th- and 19th-century city. London and Paris will be our main focus, but this palimpsestic model may be extended elsewhere, and we will welcome abstracts centring on other cities. Interdisciplinarity will be key to our conference. We hope to attract researchers from various fields, including literature and the arts, sociology, philosophy, law, science and engineering, etc. Through this ‘decompartmentalized’ approach, we will attempt to shed light on the myriad facets of the 18th- and 19th-century city.

The international conference "Nature(s)" which will be held on June 6-8th, 2013 and will coincide with other cultural and scientific events in Nantes as a "European Green Capital", will question what is really at stake when human beings consciously deal with nature and natural spaces, especially in an urban context. Over the centuries, how have writers, artists, painters or landscape planners been grappling with nature in a rapidly growing urban world, and how did they question the way in which human beings lived but also dreamt their future?

Industrial hazards and accidents (late 17th – late 19th century)
Technological accidents question our industrial society; they are an inherent part of the “risk society” concept that scientists, sociologists, geographers and anthropologists have popularised since the eighties. However, in order to step back and take a longer term view, historicization of the concept is necessary. Although historians have also begun to examine this question, they have focused primarily on the most contemporary period during which spectacular accidents have occurred and have sometimes led to disasters. But industrial (or artisanal or mining) accidents occurred throughout the earlier economic development process in Europe. They went hand in hand with the emergence of the industrial society that they helped to create.
