In the Shadow of the Petrochemical Smokestack. Chemical Corridors and Environmental Health
This conference endeavours to study chemical industries that use fossil fuel derivatives. It will focus on these industrial activities’ environmental and health effects on surrounding areas and local populations. In the 20th century, petrochemical activities shaped their surrounding areas. Not just because such facilities required massive ancillary infrastructure networks to be built, but also because they enabled the production of new substances requiring coal and oil derivatives. As soon as petrochemical facilities were brought on stream, their harmful effects on local communities were perceptible. These industrial activities were rapidly accused of causing health problems for workers and neighbouring populations alike. Conflictuality was generally latent but sometimes broke out in overt violence, especially when highly visible “industrial spillovers” occurred, abruptly putting the spotlight on previously-unnoticed chronic pollution. Up to the present day, this conflictuality can also be vehemently expressed when deindustrialisation breaks the unspoken agreement that may have existed between workers and the companies that paid their wages. When an industrial activity ends, its ecological and health effects may become apparent, fuelling the resentment of the affected local populations and giving rise to activist movements that sometimes draw on revived memories of past disasters.

Call for papers - Epistemology and methodology
Thinking and conducting the transformation of work
The contribution of the ergological approach and the works of Yves Schwartz
The ergological approach intends to the co-production of knowledge with the aim of transforming work and more generally the social life. As stated by the scientific project of the Workshop, “the ergological approach, in its history and in its issues, is a priori a subject of interest for everyone, each exploring in its own way the intricacies of human life, but also anyone who wants to think about its own activity and that of others, to reconsider the ways of doing and taking action, of opening new perspectives in ways of working, acting and living”. Yet this approach, which is particularly needed nowadays, is insufficiently known and sometimes considered complex. This is the state of play at the origin of this international workshop for which this call for papers is published.

Conference, symposium - Sociology
Engineers and society in India
From c. 1850 to present times
More than any other, the profession of engineer appears to encapsulate many of the transformations affecting contemporary India today. Engineers symbolise the rise of the so-called middle classes, and the manner in which India has positioned itself as an emerging power in the international labour market, as it has become one of the favourite destinations for major technology firms.

Time - a contemporary history of a political and scientific issue

Accidents and the role of the State in the 20th century
In the workshop on "Accidents and the role of the state" we want to discuss, from a historical perspective, the changing relationship between accidents and the modern state during the 20th century. Strasbourg)-FRIAS (Freiburg) joint research project on military accidents in France and Germany in the twentieth century. We are therefore especially interested in proposals that deal with the role of the military. However, relevant topics for the workshop could, of course, also come from the realm of the histories of technology, of environment, of medicine, or of the rise of the modern state. We are interested both in presentations of case studies as well as in more conceptual approaches on the topic. Contributions that deal with accidents in German and French history are highly welcome. However, the call is by no means limited to historians of France or Germany.

Mikhail Bakunin e a Associação Internacional dos Trabalhadores

Worker's environments in the 20th century
Between work environment and lived environment: what common ground for environmental history and the history of work?

Engineer or engineers? Between expansion and fragmentation
New insights and comparative perspectives
