Founding, selecting, defending: how to make democracy survive (1918-1960)?

Ce colloque international s’inscrit dans le projet de formation-recherche « Quelle démocratie ? La réflexion sur la crise, la modernisation et les limites de la démocratie en Allemagne, en France, en Angleterre et en Europe centrale entre 1919 et 1939 ». Ce projet pluridisciplinaire propose de revenir sur les réflexions autour de la démocratie de l’entre-deux-guerres en s’intéressant particulièrement aux discours critiques et aux projets de réformes issus du camp démocratique au sens large. Sa démarche consiste à insérer ces discours dans leurs contextes historique, idéologique et socio-culturel, tout en s’intéressant également à leur impact sur la vie politique et sociale de l’époque. Dans la logique de ce projet, ce colloque portera sur la question de l’enracinement démocratique, c’est-à-dire sur la question des moyens à mettre en œuvre pour faire survivre une démocratie en milieu (potentiellement) hostile.

The week: partitioning and uses of social time, 19th-20th centuries

La semaine est évidemment une veille affaire puisqu’elle présida à l’invention du monde. Mais il se trouve que beaucoup l’oublièrent. Si ses usages, notamment religieux, ont longtemps ordonné l’organisation du temps collectif, ils tendirent à s’affaiblir dans le cours ordinaire des choses qui lui préféra d’autres scansions, quotidiennes, agricoles, saisonnières, etc. Une inflexion est cependant sensible à compter de la fin du XIX^e siècle. Le déclin (relatif) de la semaine religieuse s’accompagne en effet, et paradoxalement, d’usages de plus en plus nombreux de découpes hebdomadaires. Au théâtre, puis au cinéma, la « semaine culturelle » a le vent en poupe. Le monde des affaires ou celui de la politique tendent également à réordonner le temps sur un mode hebdomadaire. Ce sont les usages renouvelés du temps par la découpe hebdomadaire que cette livraison entend explorer, à partir d’une série d’essais empiriques centrés sur des pratiques ou des activités caractéristiques de la modernité occidentale.

The 11th annual international conference on Nordic and Baltic Studies

Brexit has just happened and its consequences are not yet fully comprehended. Would the outcome be a return to a status quo ante the Brentry of 1 January 1973 in British-EU relations? Would Britain become a sort of bigger Norway tightly connected to the EU, but yet not fully a member of the united organization? Would Britain really continue to exist as such? Would Scotland, not to mention other territories, emulate London and decide on their own Brexit, this time from the United Kingdom, in order to rejoin the EU? Would actually Brexit become a pathway for other skeptical EU nations? Would Brexit rocket exclusive forms of nationalisms? Would the whole of united Europe collapse, on the long run, as a result of Brexit as the League of Nations had become toothless after the US Senate had vetoed the Pact of League of Nations? But what effect is going to have Brexit on Scandinavian countries which historically have been closely connected to Britain? How is it reflected in Scandinavian intellectual milieus, in mass-media, in public discourses? What about the Baltic states which received a strong support from Britain in key moments of their history, for instance when Royal Navy came at the rescue of Estonian and Latvian independence following World War I or in the process of re-enactment of Baltic sovereignty after the collapse of the Soviet Union? The IV^th International Congress Thinking the Latin American right wings follows the three previous ones held in France (2014), Argentina (2016) and Brazil (2018), which have permitted the constitution of a community of researchers working on Latin American right-wings. Several specialists from different countries and disciplines have joined in this network, in order to promote projects and studies on this theme, and stimulated the development of new issues related to this political family. The use of various methodologies such as the analysis of political traditions and cultures, representations and imaginaries, identities, networks, sensitivities and memories have made it possible to consolidate a field of study that has become relevant to understand current Latin American political scene.

European and global responses to the concept of “literary engagement” between 1945 and 1968

ACLA 2020 panel

The question of “engagement” (or commitment) became one of the defining elements of post-WWII literature and was, for a long period, at the center of the discussions about the relationship between aesthetics and politics in several European countries. Commonly associated with the name of Jean-Paul Sartre, the success of the notion of “committed literature,” however, went well beyond the French national space. This panel focuses on the transnational circulation of the concept of “committed literature” and, more broadly, on the circulation of related notions, such as writers’ “responsibility,” as well as on any type of counter-discourse or counter-theory targeting “committed literature.” We would like to explore the different degrees of transnational propagation and dissemination of these debates both in regions that absorbed the intellectual debates taking place in France and in the case of countries which remained more impermeable to them.

L’objectif de cette journée d’étude est de prolonger les discussions en France, d’une part autour d’interventions des spécialistes français, d’autre part à partir de l’ouvrage de Christoph Gusy, professeur de droit public à l’Université de Bielefeld, précisément paru à l’occasion de ce centenaire.

Political fiction

En 2004, Ralph Keyes publie son essai, The post-truth era, Dishonesty and Deception in Contemporary Life, popularisant le terme post-truth, élu mot de l’année 2016 par le Dictionnaire d’Oxford. Dans cette ère « post-vérité », ne peut-on au moins juger du discours politique à l’aune de la vérité des faits réels. Il ne faut pourtant pas oublier que le pouvoir politique a toujours eu partie liée à la fiction, et constitue ce que Patrick Boucheron, dans son enseignement au Collège de France, nomme une « fiction politique », soit « la forme narrative de la théorie politique », qui dédouble sur le plan symbolique l’agir politique. Quels écarts entre le discours politique et la réalité que nous vivons ? Sommes-nous les dupes plus ou moins consentantes de la fiction politique ?

Mixed arbitral tribunals, 1919–1930

An experiment in the international adjudication of private rights

The creation of a system of Mixed Arbitral Tribunals (MATs) was a major contribution of the post-WWI peace treaties to the development of international adjudication. Numerically speaking, the 36 MATs were undoubtedly the busiest international courts of the interwar period. Taken together, they decided on more than 70,000 cases, mostly covering private rights. The MATs are similarly remarkable from a procedural point of view. First, their respective rules of procedure were so detailed that contemporaries described them as 'miniature civil procedure codes'. Second, in a departure from most other international courts and tribunals, they also allowed individuals whose rights were at stake to become involved in the proceedings before them.

Enhancing human in Europe: dream and nightmare of the interwar period

Number of historians and philosophers consider in general that transhumanism and its aim at enhancing the human through applied science and technology have their roots in the inter-war period: Julian Huxley, Jean Coutrot, John B.S. Haldane or John D. Bernal are indeed massively considered as the precursors of such ideas. But are they the sole references to mention when considering the inter-war origins of transhumanism, or are they just the tip of the iceberg of a broader current of thought emerging at that time? Such question immediately raises another one, which requires clarification : can current transhumanism(s) really be linked to the ideas emerging in the inter-war period ? The aim of the workshop will be first to check whether and how the idea of an enhanced human through technology intervention may have circulated in Europe during that time. Secondly, space will be given to look for pertinent criteria for the identification of a « transhumanism » of the inter-war period, by evaluating the nature of the indices which may be studied: mobilizing ideas, currents of thoughts, schools of thoughts, sociotechnical imaginaries, etc. Within these perspectives, the workshop will make possible comparisons between the different European contexts (England, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, etc.), and the several papers will help us to better understand the circulation of ideas, networks and human exchanges which contributed to forge the cradle of transhumanist ideas. Communications will be in French or in English.

La rencontre avec la pensée de Rosa Luxemburg a marqué en profondeur les travaux de recherche de Claudie Weill, historienne du socialisme et de la social-démocratie. Rosa Luxemburg a construit son œuvre en appliquant la méthode d’analyse de Marx aux problèmes d’un capitalisme en mutation, et notamment à l’étude des phénomènes récurrents de crise et des moyens employés par le capital pour restaurer sa rentabilité et garantir sa survie. Les problèmes qu’elle a soulevés, et dont Claudie Weill s’est fait l’interprète, s’imposent aujourd’hui à la réflexion critique, par-delà les évidentes différences de contexte. Ce numéro thématique de la revue L’homme et la société entend stimuler une réflexion afin de prolonger d’un point de vue théorique autant que pratique la pensée ainsi mise en valeur.

La révolution allemande de 1918-1919 : une histoire d'en bas

Cette journée d’étude organisée à la date anniversaire de la double proclamation de la République à Berlin (9 novembre 1918) s’intéressera à la relation subjective de l’épisode révolutionnaire, que cette relation émane de souvenirs personnels, ou de constructions littéraires et artistiques. À partir de textes littéraires, d’œuvres artistiques, d’articles de presse, et d’égo-documents (relations, témoignages), elle interrogera le vécu personnel depuis le cœur même des événements mais également les reconstructions a posteriori au sein de cadres idéologiques différents, ainsi que les processus de sémantisation par la philosophie ou la littérature. Ainsi, à travers l’étude des différents récits et des modalités de (re-)configuration du vécu, nous tenterons d’écrire l’histoire d’en bas, de rendre visible le kaléidoscope des différentes expériences et d’en tirer une image de la révolution nécessairement lacunaire, contradictoire et multiple.

Dictatorship and images absent from non-fiction cinema

Ce numéro de la revue Savoirs en Prisme s’intéresse spécifiquement à l’absence d’image d’archive originelle dans les documentaires réalisés au XXI^e siècle sur les dictatures ibéro-américaines. Il entend interroger la façon dont le cinéma des deux premières décennies utilise diverses stratégies pour évoquer cette absence, ce vide, dans le cadre d’une production qui est principalement centrée sur la construction d’une mémoire des dictatures et dont la plupart des films inscrivent dans le présent un passé de violences dissimulées puis refoulées par l’État et la société. Le recours à différentes stratégies permet de raconter l’indicible, de prendre de la distance avec le sujet et d’éviter la fascination qu’exerce l’horreur sur les spectateurs.
