Figures and Perspectives on the Mass and the Individual in Capitalist Modernity (19th-21st century)
How is it possible to use the notion of mass without making it collapse into a complete condemnation of collective action or into an acritical celebration of the crowd? From there on, the relationship between mass and individual can be addressed in many fashions: Are there any specific ways for the mass to organize itself as a political subject? What are means whereby artworks represent and transform the linkage between mass and individual? What are the mutations undergone by the mass qua object of the social sciences? How does capitalist modernity affect the moral and psychic autonomy of individuals?

LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism
In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists. The « LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism » online conference is jointly organised by the Université de Lorraine and its research centres (2L2S and CREM), with the support of the French ministry of culture (DRAC Grand-Est), and the LGBTIQ centre Couleurs Gaies.

Socialisation: reinvesting in an over-familiar concept
Masters study day: "Enquiry and analysis of political processes"
La journée d'études portera sur le concept de « socialisation », un concept (trop ?) ordinaire en sciences sociales que nous essayerons de réinvestir via des terrains actuels. Elle s'adresse aux jeunes chercheur-e-s, doctorant-e-s et étudiant-e-s en master de toutes les disciplines de sciences sociales. Le programme est articulé autour de trois axes. Le premier axe sera consacré aux différentes manières par lesquelles s'opère la socialisation et aux concepts scientifiques permettant de les appréhender. Le second aura pour objectif de revenir sur certaines dimensions moins investies du processus de socialisation comme le rapport dynamique à l'espace et au temps. Enfin, un troisième axe nous permettra de mettre en débat les frontières de la « socialisation politique », en effet ce qui est (ou non) politique dans le processus de socialisation ne semble pas faire consensus.

Resistance to Order and Authority (ROAR)

Religion has served to legitimize political power, but it has also been a basis for resistance against order and authority. Be it the Maccabean revolt, Gandhi's practice of non-violence resistance, contemporary neo-pagan religions, or the counter-system movements portrayed by Mark Juergensmeyer in his 2001 book Terror in the Mind of God, religious beliefs have motivated people to reject social order that they deem as unjust, and possibly rise against it. Even in today’s secularized societies, religion has served as the ground for social movements and manifestations addressing pressing socioeconomic threats such as climate change, social inequality, authoritarian governments and minority discrimination. These observations have encouraged new trends in scholarly debate, especially regarding the emergence of alternative religious ideas and rituals in modern societies. old and new religious convictions legitimized various resistance movements among different communities? Which causes have influenced violent mobilizations against established social order, non-violent struggle, or the establishment of alternative community frameworks? What can these movements and ideas tell us about the role that religion plays today both in secularized and non-secularized societies?

The Public Sphere and the Politics of Space
With the gradual rise of socio-economic and political challenges facing the Middle East and North African (MENA) and the Sub-Saharan regions, the “public space” and the “public sphere” have come to the forefront of scholarly debates and research by scholars in various fields of studies. The concept of the “public sphere” was conceived as part of the interplay of first a physical locale that imply constant social relationships in a concrete public domain (public space) and second the constellations of socio-economic factors contributing to the rise of political debates (public sphere). The aim of this conference is to probe social, economic, political problems via the theoretical lenses of the public sphere, the different aspects of spatial configurations, the politics of space, as well as the counter-public or parallel discursive arenas as conceived by Nancy Fraser.

Migration: between cultural diversity, plurilingualism and sustainable development
La problématique de la migration des hommes et des peuples a toujours existé en Afrique et partout dans le monde. De tout temps, l’humain a senti le besoin de migrer vers des ailleurs plus propices à la sécurité, au commerce, à l’extension du patrimoine, au tourisme, au confort, etc. C’est pourquoi Ban Ki-Moon (secrétaire général de l’ONU de 2006 à 2017) estime que la migration est l’expression de l’aspiration humaine à la dignité, la sécurité et un futur meilleur. Elle fait partie du tissu social, de notre construction en tant que famille humaine. Revenant sur les raisons de la migration, Denis Drechsler et Jason Gagnon (2008, p.74) affirment que les individus migrent pour différentes raisons. Leur déplacement peut être forcé, pour cause de conflit, de politique migratoire, de dangers environnementaux ou technologiques, de maladie ou de déportation politique. Mais l’émigration est dans la majorité des cas une décision personnelle ou familiale prise pour un motif économique.

Jazz, globalisation and communities
Now a quasi-universal musical form, present in all five continents, jazz developed as a result of a complex process of cultural exchange, making it a true product of cultural globalisation. Typical of the success of the « glocal », as defined by Robertson in 1994, between the « resilience of the local and global consciousness », jazz has generated new communities of amateur and professional musicians around a strong local musical tradition, thanks first to the presence of foreign musicians, and second to the global nature of jazz itself. The aim of this one-day conference will be to explore the local and global dimensions of these jazz communities from the point of the musicians, the audiences and media, in order to understand how jazz, the quintessentially global musical genre, creates not just local and global communities, but also the links between these very communities.

This conference explores the theory, practices, paradigms and circulation of artistic activism in international perspective. It aims at examining the resurgence and development of artistic productions which revive agitational practices. Artistic activism or "artivism" questions consensual discourses on the neutrality of art and aesthetics. Taking into account the need for a global approach to the phenomenon, and the exploration of its most diverse forms and concepts, this conference aims to contribute to the study of arts activism since the 1990s.

L’UNESCO nous rappelle que la diversité linguistique et le multilinguisme sont essentiels pour le développement durable, mais l’attention se porte essentiellement sur les langues menacées et place la sauvegarde de la diversité linguistique sur le même plan que la biodiversité. La question des langues en danger est en effet essentielle, et quelques études suggèrent que la disparition des langues présente des risques importants pour la conservation de la biodiversité. Ce que nous voulons faire apparaître, c’est que les langues entrent en jeu dans tous les processus économiques, sociaux et culturels qui sont à la base du développement. La culture, l’éducation et la santé sont des facteurs de développement majeurs dont l’accumulation du capital est plus une conséquence qu’une cause et, où que l’on se place dans le monde, on peut en faire le constat, le rôle de la langue est omniprésent.

Le réseau thématique « Sociologie des arts et de la culture » de l’Association française de sociologie (RT14) s’associe au réseau thématique 24 « Sexe, classe, race : rapports sociaux et construction de l’altérité » à l'occasion d’un colloque articulant leur objets thématiques respectifs. Cette manifestation entend offrir un espace de discussion à des chercheur·e·s attaché·e·s à interroger l’articulation des rapports de pouvoir de classe, de sexe et de race (notamment) au sein des mondes de l’art et des industries culturelles. Ce colloque vise à faire émerger de nouvelles pistes de réflexions pour saisir les transformations en cours au sein de l’univers de production des biens symboliques.

1959-1985, through the prism of the Paris Biennial
Cette session vise à discuter la valeur symbolique, culturelle et politique de la Biennale de Paris, des années 1950 aux années 1970, et sa réception dans deux contextes totalitaires de part et d'autre du rideau de fer. D'une part, une analyse critique de la Biennale de Paris par la presse polonaise du tournant des années 1950-1960 permettra de positionner cet événement par rapport au climat politique fluctuant de la période et aux débats locaux sur le statut de l'art moderne. D'autre part, l'étude de l'interaction entre les institutions franquistes, les artistes et la Biennale aidera à comprendre la position de cet événement (et son instrumentalisation) dans le contexte des politiques culturelles du régime aussi bien que dans celui de la montée des mouvements hostiles à la dictature et des luttes pour la construction de l'art moderne en Espagne.

15 May 1968: the Odeon theatre in Paris is occupied by students and becomes the insurgent headquarters where every night militants recount the days' action in occupied factories to an audience of people camping in the auditorium. Youth rebellion was never as mythologised as that of the French students’ fight against institutional oppression. The effects were felt across the Channel, too – but the nature of those effects was, and remains, disputed. 50 years on… where are we? What remains of autogestion and emancipatory education? What remains of theatre inventiveness and sedition? What remains of a need for participatory audiences? What remains of utopia and dissent?

Global '68 - Solidarity in Alliance and Global History
1968 was a year of offensives, uprisings, and demonstrations against capitalism and imperialism, for liberation and emancipation and the war in Vietnam was its epicenter. The events claimed many victories for democracy, equality, and emancipation, but also provoked deep, abiding repression. A counterfeit history has subsequently erased police violence and the deaths of participants, removed workers, women, students, and indigenous peoples from the picture, and eliminated anti-Americanism, anti-imperialism, anti-capitalism, as well as the profound influences of the wars and interventions in Algeria, Latin America, and Vietnam. “Global 68” will retrieve the aspirations, energies, memories, and histories of this worldwide movement and offer hope to a new generation of activists.

Que signifient les expressions : intervention, pratique, intervention individuelle, communautaire, engagement social, changement social ? Tout d’abord, comment définir « intervention » et « art » ? Une simple recherche Google recense au moins 29 synonymes d’intervention. Ici, nous explorerons les interventions visant le changement social. Donc, comment ceci s’articule-t-il ? Comment l’art intervient-il sur le social ? Comment le social peut-il être appréhendé par l’art ? Comment l’art et la culture conjugués à une approche de changement social peuvent-ils transformer des institutions, des pratiques ou à tout le moins en atténuer les conséquences difficiles ? Comment éviter l’instrumentalisation de l’art ? Comment parler de résistances et de résiliences ? Que veut dire Art, avec un grand A ?
