The current state of moralisation in capitalism

L’Homme et la Société journal

Dans un contexte global où les inégalités économiques atteignent de nouveaux sommets et engendrent des perceptions d’injustices cruelles et insolubles pour les acteurs individuels et collectifs quel que soit leur pays, le capitalisme semble, aux yeux d’une grande majorité, entaché d’une immoralité croissante. Dans le même moment, les déclarations visant la moralisation du marché et de la finance se développent et s’intensifient dans une perspective qui viserait à atténuer les maux présents, sans être suivies d’effets concrets. Par cet appel à articles, L’Homme et la Société souhaite engager le débat sur les transformations présentes qui, sous couvert de moralisation du capitalisme, découragent, démobilisent et en fin de compte démoralisent les possibles vers une autre société.

Pontmain, the Marian apparition on January 17, 1871: texts, contexts, interpretations

After being defeated by Prussian troops at the Battle of Le Mans, elements of the French Army retreat to the east of the department of Mayenne on January 13, 1871. Scuffles ensue in many spots, to the gate outside Laval. The advance of Prussian troops on the territory, while Paris has been under siege for four months, preoccupies the inhabitants of Mayenne.On January 17, the Virgin Mary appears to children of Pontmain, and only to them. The villagers pray and move from anguish to joy and hope.January 2021 marks the 150th anniversary of these military events and this apparition.

Intersectional Challenges in Afroeuropean Communities

8th Biennial Afroeuropeans Network Conference

The conference aims to consider how Afroeuropean communities are shaped by the intersections of ‘race’ and ethnicity with other markers of identification such as gender, class, sexuality, ability, age, citizenship status, language… Informed by intersectional thinking and its rejection of unidimensional perspectives in activism, policy and research, the conference explores how diverse processes of privileging and discrimination interact, making for complex and dynamic experiences of what it means to be Afroeuropean. It acknowledges that the racial and ethnic alterity of Afroeuropeans intersects with other identities (e.g. male, female, queer, working class, religious, disabled, aged…) and specifically seeks to examine to what extent these intersections create new alignments and opportunities.

Resistance to Order and Authority (ROAR)

CEU/ELTE/Masaryk PhD Conference 2020

Religion has served to legitimize political power, but it has also been a basis for resistance against order and authority. Be it the Maccabean revolt, Gandhi's practice of non-violence resistance, contemporary neo-pagan religions, or the counter-system movements portrayed by Mark Juergensmeyer in his 2001 book Terror in the Mind of God, religious beliefs have motivated people to reject social order that they deem as unjust, and possibly rise against it. Even in today’s secularized societies, religion has served as the ground for social movements and manifestations addressing pressing socioeconomic threats such as climate change, social inequality, authoritarian governments and minority discrimination. These observations have encouraged new trends in scholarly debate, especially regarding the emergence of alternative religious ideas and rituals in modern societies. old and new religious convictions legitimized various resistance movements among different communities? Which causes have influenced violent mobilizations against established social order, non-violent struggle, or the establishment of alternative community frameworks? What can these movements and ideas tell us about the role that religion plays today both in secularized and non-secularized societies?

Migration: between cultural diversity, plurilingualism and sustainable development

La problématique de la migration des hommes et des peuples a toujours existé en Afrique et partout dans le monde. De tout temps, l’humain a senti le besoin de migrer vers des ailleurs plus propices à la sécurité, au commerce, à l’extension du patrimoine, au tourisme, au confort, etc. C’est pourquoi Ban Ki-Moon (secrétaire général de l’ONU de 2006 à 2017) estime que la migration est l’expression de l’aspiration humaine à la dignité, la sécurité et un futur meilleur. Elle fait partie du tissu social, de notre construction en tant que famille humaine. Revenant sur les raisons de la migration, Denis Drechsler et Jason Gagnon (2008, p.74) affirment que les individus migrent pour différentes raisons. Leur déplacement peut être forcé, pour cause de conflit, de politique migratoire, de dangers environnementaux ou technologiques, de maladie ou de déportation politique. Mais l’émigration est dans la majorité des cas une décision personnelle ou familiale prise pour un motif économique.

Jazz, globalisation and communities

Now a quasi-universal musical form, present in all five continents, jazz developed as a result of a complex process of cultural exchange, making it a true product of cultural globalisation. Typical of the success of the « glocal », as defined by Robertson in 1994, between the « resilience of the local and global consciousness », jazz has generated new communities of amateur and professional musicians around a strong local musical tradition, thanks first to the presence of foreign musicians, and second to the global nature of jazz itself. The aim of this one-day conference will be to explore the local and global dimensions of these jazz communities from the point of the musicians, the audiences and media, in order to understand how jazz, the quintessentially global musical genre, creates not just local and global communities, but also the links between these very communities.

Il y a cinquante ans paraissait le mensuel Actuel, lancé par Jean-François Bizot et de nombreux journalistes soucieux d’inventer une presse d’un nouveau genre. Ce support inédit, dans le droit-fil de la contre-culture américaine et de sa free press, voulait être une caisse de résonance pour tout objet culturel auquel pouvait être prêté l’étiquette underground. De 1970 jusqu’à nos jours, cette étiquette est restée vivace mais sa définition – malgré les efforts de Bizot et ses collaborateurs pour résoudre l’équation – est restée relativement floue, faisant osciller l’objet culturel underground entre la construction refusant les codes académiques de sa discipline et le projet intensément subversif, volontairement abrasif.

Nous avons voulu décliner notre réflexion à partir de plusieurs moments distincts, dans le fond et dans la forme, associant experts, praticiens et échanges avec le public. À la suite d’une table ronde introductive sur l’actualité renouvelée des colères politiques, nous reviendrons sur les colères populaires passées et présentes, sur l’interprétation mythologique et philosophique de la colère dans la pensée antique, mais aussi sur l’apport psychologique de la colère à la construction du soi, pour conclure sur la présentation des représentations artistiques de la colère des colères, celle de Dieu ou des dieux.

Associative Worlds : Grasping Politics by doing Ethnography on Associations

Special issue 2021, vol. 47(3) of the Swiss Journal of Sociology

This special issue aims to discuss ethnographic approaches that allow to shed light on the plurality of associations, societies and clubs. The aim is to examine the plurality of associational practices and meanings of associations, in order to contribute to a new scrutiny of the political dimension of associations. On the one hand, the papers will allow, by relying on ethnographic enquiries, to grasp the large variety of situations and worldviews that the world of associations entails, and through this, to open the way for underlying sociological questions. On the other hand, they shall question the contribution of ethnography to an exploration of the political potential of associational action - without limiting themselves to an organizational or motivational approach of the origins of an association.

The imaginary world surrounding digital communication seems to impose a vision that crushes cultural diversity. The Symposium aims to jointly explore the heterogeneity of uses, productions and issues raised by the meeting of globalised technology that is often Western-centred, with various cultures. The first edition will focus on Francophone sub-Saharan Africa, a multicultural territory where contemporary geopolitical contexts pose particularly vital issues for communications research. These issues are of interest mainly to the information and communication sciences community, but the contributions of researchers from various cultural and disciplinary horizons will make it possible to tackle this very broad problem of communication, especially digital, in sensitive areas, according to different complementary approaches.

Revolts, revolutions and performance in the Middle East in the 21th century

Le cycle de recherches « Révoltes, révolutions et performance au Proche et Moyen Orient au XXI^e siècle » a pour objectif d’étudier la trajectoire politique et sociale des pays des régions du Proche et du Moyen-Orient par le biais de la création artistique, en particulier les arts de la scène et de la performance. Dans ces sociétés en profonde mutation, il s’agit donc de s’interroger sur le lien entre création, révolte et révolution au cours d’une série de séances de travail, et sur la manière dont la création s’est fait l’écho des tensions à l’œuvre dans la société, comment celles-ci sont restituées à la scène. Cette troisième journée sera consacrée à l'étude de productions théâtrales dans le contexte des révolutions qui ont traversé les pays de la région en 2011, en envisageant ces créations d'un point de vue esthétique (formes, dispositifs) et politique.

Outre l’étude des manifestations identitaires hippies dans le monde hispanophone et ses spécificités, il convient d’analyser comment s’est opérée cette transposition d’un mouvement particulier dans d’autres contextes socio-culturels, quels sont les éléments qui ont favorisé cette mobilité ainsi que les échanges et les interactions entre les deux espaces.

Conformément à ses trois éditions précédentes, l’objectif du colloque « Agir dans la ville. Art et politique dans l'espace urbain 4 : De la destruction » est de réunir des chercheurs issus de différents champs disciplinaires tels que l’architecture, l’histoire de l’art, la sociologie, l’anthropologie, la philosophie, les arts et sciences de la communication, les langues et lettres, la géographie, le droit ou les sciences historiques autour d’une analyse critique de la dimension politique des interventions dans les espaces urbains. Afin de faire du colloque une véritable plateforme d’échanges et de débats scientifiques, chaque intervenant disposera d’un temps de parole de 40 minutes suivi d’un échange avec l’assistance de 20 minutes. Dans cette perspective, il est attendu des participants qu’ils assistent à l’entièreté du colloque.

They will be granted seed funding to develop their initiatives and advice from a mentor chosen with them within the AFIELD network, for a period of 18 months. Initiated in 2014 by Council and supported by Tsadik Foundation, AFIELD is a network, a fellowship and an advocacy program for social initiatives from arts and culture. Each year the program supports artists, researchers or activists committed to a long-term social initiative by identifying 2 fellows and 3 mentees.

Penser les sociétés coloniales africaines, les indépendances et les constructions nationales à travers la scolarisation enrichira une perspective comparatiste à l’échelle du continent car les questions liées à l'instruction et à la scolarisation ont occupé une place importante dans la constitution des empires coloniaux, des réseaux sociaux et intellectuels qui les ont structurés et des débats qui les ont animés.
