Pontmain, the Marian apparition on January 17, 1871: texts, contexts, interpretations
After being defeated by Prussian troops at the Battle of Le Mans, elements of the French Army retreat to the east of the department of Mayenne on January 13, 1871. Scuffles ensue in many spots, to the gate outside Laval. The advance of Prussian troops on the territory, while Paris has been under siege for four months, preoccupies the inhabitants of Mayenne.On January 17, the Virgin Mary appears to children of Pontmain, and only to them. The villagers pray and move from anguish to joy and hope.January 2021 marks the 150th anniversary of these military events and this apparition.

Intersectional Challenges in Afroeuropean Communities
8th Biennial Afroeuropeans Network Conference
The conference aims to consider how Afroeuropean communities are shaped by the intersections of ‘race’ and ethnicity with other markers of identification such as gender, class, sexuality, ability, age, citizenship status, language… Informed by intersectional thinking and its rejection of unidimensional perspectives in activism, policy and research, the conference explores how diverse processes of privileging and discrimination interact, making for complex and dynamic experiences of what it means to be Afroeuropean. It acknowledges that the racial and ethnic alterity of Afroeuropeans intersects with other identities (e.g. male, female, queer, working class, religious, disabled, aged…) and specifically seeks to examine to what extent these intersections create new alignments and opportunities.

Jazz, globalisation and communities
Now a quasi-universal musical form, present in all five continents, jazz developed as a result of a complex process of cultural exchange, making it a true product of cultural globalisation. Typical of the success of the « glocal », as defined by Robertson in 1994, between the « resilience of the local and global consciousness », jazz has generated new communities of amateur and professional musicians around a strong local musical tradition, thanks first to the presence of foreign musicians, and second to the global nature of jazz itself. The aim of this one-day conference will be to explore the local and global dimensions of these jazz communities from the point of the musicians, the audiences and media, in order to understand how jazz, the quintessentially global musical genre, creates not just local and global communities, but also the links between these very communities.

Il y a cinquante ans paraissait le mensuel Actuel, lancé par Jean-François Bizot et de nombreux journalistes soucieux d’inventer une presse d’un nouveau genre. Ce support inédit, dans le droit-fil de la contre-culture américaine et de sa free press, voulait être une caisse de résonance pour tout objet culturel auquel pouvait être prêté l’étiquette underground. De 1970 jusqu’à nos jours, cette étiquette est restée vivace mais sa définition – malgré les efforts de Bizot et ses collaborateurs pour résoudre l’équation – est restée relativement floue, faisant osciller l’objet culturel underground entre la construction refusant les codes académiques de sa discipline et le projet intensément subversif, volontairement abrasif.

Taking into account the need for a global approach to the phenomenon, and the exploration of its most diverse forms and concepts, this conference aims to contribute to the study of arts activism since the 1990s.

À la suite d’une table ronde introductive sur l’actualité renouvelée des colères politiques, nous reviendrons sur les colères populaires passées et présentes, sur l’interprétation mythologique et philosophique de la colère dans la pensée antique, mais aussi sur l’apport psychologique de la colère à la construction du soi, pour conclure sur la présentation des représentations artistiques de la colère des colères, celle de Dieu ou des dieux.

Communication and digital technology in Francophone sub-Saharan Africa
The imaginary world surrounding digital communication seems to impose a vision that crushes cultural diversity. The Symposium aims to jointly explore the heterogeneity of uses, productions and issues raised by the meeting of globalised technology that is often Western-centred, with various cultures. The first edition will focus on Francophone sub-Saharan Africa, a multicultural territory where contemporary geopolitical contexts pose particularly vital issues for communications research. These issues are of interest mainly to the information and communication sciences community, but the contributions of researchers from various cultural and disciplinary horizons will make it possible to tackle this very broad problem of communication, especially digital, in sensitive areas, according to different complementary approaches.

The Springs of theatre: Art in time of revolutions
Revolts, revolutions and performance in the Middle East in the 21th century
Le cycle de recherches « Révoltes, révolutions et performance au Proche et Moyen Orient au XXIe siècle » a pour objectif d’étudier la trajectoire politique et sociale des pays des régions du Proche et du Moyen-Orient par le biais de la création artistique, en particulier les arts de la scène et de la performance. Dans ces sociétés en profonde mutation, il s’agit donc de s’interroger sur le lien entre création, révolte et révolution au cours d’une série de séances de travail, et sur la manière dont la création s’est fait l’écho des tensions à l’œuvre dans la société, comment celles-ci sont restituées à la scène. Cette troisième journée sera consacrée à l'étude de productions théâtrales dans le contexte des révolutions qui ont traversé les pays de la région en 2011, en envisageant ces créations d'un point de vue esthétique (formes, dispositifs) et politique.

Si le mouvement hippie naît aux États-Unis dans les années 1960, il n’est pas resté circonscrit à ce seul territoire mais s’est largement diffusé dans d’autres parties du monde parmi lesquelles l’Espagne et l’Amérique hispanique. Outre l’étude des manifestations identitaires hippies dans le monde hispanophone et ses spécificités, il convient d’analyser comment s’est opérée cette transposition d’un mouvement particulier dans d’autres contextes socio-culturels, quels sont les éléments qui ont favorisé cette mobilité ainsi que les échanges et les interactions entre les deux espaces.

All about destruction
Conformément à ses trois éditions précédentes, l’objectif du colloque « Agir dans la ville. Art et politique dans l'espace urbain 4 : De la destruction » est de réunir des chercheurs issus de différents champs disciplinaires tels que l’architecture, l’histoire de l’art, la sociologie, l’anthropologie, la philosophie, les arts et sciences de la communication, les langues et lettres, la géographie, le droit ou les sciences historiques autour d’une analyse critique de la dimension politique des interventions dans les espaces urbains. Afin de faire du colloque une véritable plateforme d’échanges et de débats scientifiques, chaque intervenant disposera d’un temps de parole de 40 minutes suivi d’un échange avec l’assistance de 20 minutes. Dans cette perspective, il est attendu des participants qu’ils assistent à l’entièreté du colloque.

Initiated in 2014 by Council and supported by Tsadik Foundation, AFIELD is a network, a fellowship and an advocacy program for social initiatives from arts and culture. Each year the program supports artists, researchers or activists committed to a long-term social initiative by identifying 2 fellows and 3 mentees.

Narrating Postmigration: Interdisciplinary Approaches
These study days at Aix-Marseille Université aim to gather junior and advanced scholars working in the broad field of postmigration studies. Within this scope, we will focus on postmigration narratives – a notion that encompasses both fictional narratives and narratives documented in ethnographies – understood as narrative forms that that do not primarily refer to a migration event but rather “the transformation and cultural mixing processes that it produces for future generations” (Geiser 2008 127). Our objective is to produce a comparative dialogue between literary studies and social sciences that is based on a common understanding of postmigration narratives as migration heritage.

The social history of black populations in France
Depuis plusieurs années, des travaux étudient les formes de racialisation subies, ou revendiquées par certains groupes dans la société française, en particulier par les populations noires. Ils invitent également à analyser les usages sociaux de la notion de race – entendue comme un fait social et non biologique – en France et ils interrogent de façon générale la place à accorder à la « question raciale » dans l’historiographie française. Quelle histoire sociale des populations noires ces travaux permettent-ils de construire ? Dans quelle mesure, la catégorie « populations noires » est-elle pertinente et que peut-elle apporter ? Sur le plan empirique, force est de constater que les groupes susceptibles de s’inscrire dans cette catégorie sont plus ou moins bien connus. Comment dépasser la réduction de cette catégorie à des élites sociales ou militantes souvent bien étroites ?

En privilégiant une approche transversale, il est question d’interroger la manière dont, sur le plan international, les minorités anglophones s'organisent et se mobilisent au bénéfice de leur communauté. Les différentes contributions devront éclairer des problématiques telles que la conception et la mise en œuvre de la paradiplomatie identitaire ; les objectifs poursuivis ; les discours énoncés ; les acteurs impliqués ; les ressources mobilisées ; les contraintes existantes et les horizons de ces relations internationales.

Quels liens existe-il entre art, intervention et justice sociale ? Que signifient les expressions : intervention, pratique, intervention individuelle, communautaire, engagement social, changement social ? Tout d’abord, comment définir « intervention » et « art » ? Une simple recherche Google recense au moins 29 synonymes d’intervention. Ici, nous explorerons les interventions visant le changement social. Donc, comment ceci s’articule-t-il ? Comment l’art intervient-il sur le social ? Comment le social peut-il être appréhendé par l’art ? Comment l’art et la culture conjugués à une approche de changement social peuvent-ils transformer des institutions, des pratiques ou à tout le moins en atténuer les conséquences difficiles ? Comment éviter l’instrumentalisation de l’art ? Comment parler de résistances et de résiliences ? Que veut dire Art, avec un grand A ?

Dialectics of Dread and Refuge

In A Grammar of the Multitude, Paolo Virno discriminates between the Kantian view of the dialectic of dread and refuge, which is based on a distinction between particular danger and absolute danger (also articulated by Heidegger through the distinction between fear and anguish) and the collapse of this distinction in the post-Fordist world, in which "the dividing line between fear and anguish, between relative dread and absolute dread, is precisely what has failed." (Virno 2004, 32) If post-Fordist institutions rely on a culture of pervasive dread – manifest as fear and anxiety – how do we resist this nearly intangible culture today? Arguably, we are moving beyond the sort of entrenched paralysis Virno speaks of, towards a new sort of political breakthrough, a manner of imagining life not determined by institutional cultures of fear and anxiety. Yet much thinking needs still to be done around the ways in which we engage in concerted resistance: do we fight within institutional walls – and if so, how do we resist systems of perpetual visibilisation – the gaze of securitization that renders us so exposed? What does this fight look like? Do we exit – and if so, where to? Is there a new underground?
