Figures and Perspectives on the Mass and the Individual in Capitalist Modernity (19th-21st century)
How is it possible to use the notion of mass without making it collapse into a complete condemnation of collective action or into an acritical celebration of the crowd? From there on, the relationship between mass and individual can be addressed in many fashions: Are there any specific ways for the mass to organize itself as a political subject? What are means whereby artworks represent and transform the linkage between mass and individual? What are the mutations undergone by the mass qua object of the social sciences? How does capitalist modernity affect the moral and psychic autonomy of individuals?

LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism
In France, a few years after the law authorizing same-sex marriage, LGBTQ associations are now facing new struggles, fighting for access to assisted procreation or the creation of a communal archive center. Drawing on these dynamics, this conference aims at interrogating the bonds between LGBTQ forms of arts, cultures and activisms. We look forward to opening a space for academics and grassroots activists, whether they be engaged in institutional collectives or not, to exchange, reflect and dialogue. LGBTQ-related topics appear to be often overlooked in French research networks. We aim to make it more visible and richer, and make it dialogue with local, national and international networks of academics and activists. The « LGBTI and Queer Art, Culture and Activism » online conference is jointly organised by the Université de Lorraine and its research centres (2L2S and CREM), with the support of the French ministry of culture (DRAC Grand-Est), and the LGBTIQ centre Couleurs Gaies.

Stages of Utopia and Dissent, 50 years on...
15 May 1968: the Odeon theatre in Paris is occupied by students and becomes the insurgent headquarters where every night militants recount the days' action in occupied factories to an audience of people camping in the auditorium. Youth rebellion was never as mythologised as that of the French students’ fight against institutional oppression. The effects were felt across the Channel, too – but the nature of those effects was, and remains, disputed. 50 years on… where are we? What remains of autogestion and emancipatory education? What remains of theatre inventiveness and sedition? What remains of a need for participatory audiences? What remains of utopia and dissent?

Marx, Semiotics and Political Praxis
This special issue of Open Cultural Studies will return to the work of Karl Marx to reflect on and engage with his coherent articulation of words and their use, of words and actions, and of the intellectual and the political. The coherence of his discourse and praxis offers tools to think through, if not seek to transform, the alienated semiotic landscape of our times as described by the Frankfurt school philosopheers, Jean Baudrillard, Frederic Jameson, Sloterdijk and Slavoj Žižek. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, in this special issue we want to honour his 11th Thesis on Feuerbach: "philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it."

The French model of cultural politics in question
What place for ethno-cultural diversity in the arts and medias?
Du 18 au 22 septembre 2017 aura lieu la deuxième édition de l'université d'été des sciences sociales de l'université Sorbonne Paris Cité. Elle interrogera la place faite à la diversité ethno-culturelle dans les arts et les médias en France. La reconnaissance symbolique par les pouvoirs publics et les institutions culturelles de formes et de pratiques naguère qualifiées de sous-, infra- ou non-culturelles (rock, bande dessinée, mode, street art, etc.) quoique toujours contestée, est en bonne voie. Ce qui l’est moins, en revanche, est la reconnaissance de la diversité ethno-culturelle de la population française et la promotion de ses minorités par le biais de la culture.

Rock and Violence in Europe (1950's-1980's)
This event is the first of two conferences, the second of which will take place in 2019 under the sponsorship of the History department at California State University, Long Beach. The first component, at Rouen, concentrates on Europe, while the second part, on the same theme, will focus on the situation in the Americas. The purpose of these two events is to gain an understanding of the place of rock in contemporary culture and to define its significance and impact in our societies. From this starting point, the conferences will also endeavor to consider the part of legend that encompasses the myth of rock music. The association between rock and violence, however fantastical and artificially constructed, is a given which has penetrated the music's history during the second part of the twentieth century; in some ways, the recent dramatic events at the Bataclan have highlighted this in an extremely tragic manner.

En effet, il semble plus juste de concevoir l’espace comme une construction, continuellement en train de se faire et de se transformer. En prenant en considération que la spatialité peut être pensée autrement que dans sa seule dimension physique, nous pouvons nous demander quelle place prennent les pratiques humaines dans la transformation de l’espace socionumérique. Par quels processus cet espace se transforme-t-il ? Comment l’espace social est-il transformé par l’avènement et la prégnance du numérique ?

Mikis Theodorakis: Music, Poetry, and Politics
Mikis Theodorakis est sans aucun doute le compositeur grec le plus populaire de son époque. Homme engagé, penseur et poète, il fut aussi ministre et député au Parlement grec, mais surtout activiste pour la paix et pour la démocratie. Son œuvre, son action et sa pensée marquent de façon significative plusieurs combats sociaux et politiques de toute la seconde partie du XXe siècle, ainsi que, sur le plan artistique, la nécessité de fonder une musique contemporaine grecque, à la fois savante et populaire. Malgré sa diversité et sa richesse, force est de constater qu’à ce jour l’œuvre de Mikis Theodorakis a fait très peu l’objet d’études. Ainsi, l’ambition de ce colloque est d’aborder spécifiquement l’œuvre de Mikis Theodorakis en croisant les regards disciplinaires et de stimuler la réflexion critique, longtemps figée face à ce personnage singulièrement complexe, dense et riche. De même, se plonger à nouveau dans l’œuvre theodorakienne à cette période de crise, et interroger sa valeur diachronique, est sans aucun doute la meilleure façon de rendre hommage au compositeur pour son 90e anniversaire.

Formes de l’opposition culturelle et représentations identitaires dans l’Europe des totalitarismes
Ouvert aux approches inter-, pluri- et transdisciplinaires et coextensif, du point de vue thématique et méthodologique, aux recherches antérieures de l’équipe organisatrice, ce colloque se donne pour but fondamental le renforcement des coopérations scientifiques des universitaires de Galati avec des unités de recherche de l’entier espace européen, tout comme le rassemblement des spécialistes en divers domaines des disciplines socio-humaines (études littéraires, culturelles, politiques et identitaires, histoire, (psycho) sociologie, pédagogie etc.), auxquels l’on donne l’occasion d’analyser, dans une perspective comparatiste, un corpus varié de textes / documents – littéraires, mémoriels, (auto)biographiques (y compris ceux publiés en samizdat), historiographiques, des documents existants dans les archives des anciennes polices politiques, des textes publiés dans la presse culturelle et politique pendant la période 1944-1989, des manuels et des programmes scolaires, des documents audio / vidéo illustratifs pour la thématique abordée etc.

Les médias ont souvent été appréhendés comme un laboratoire du genre, source et vecteur d’une conception normative et hiérarchisée des représentations qui lui sont associées. S’ils reproduisent les normes dominantes, des éléments transgressifs, voire subversifs, émergent parfois au sein de ces espaces, déstabilisant les assignations sexuées et les oppositions binaires. Changing the Tune: Popular Music and Politics in the XXIst century
From the fall of communism to the Arab spring
Popular Music scholars have devoted considerable attention to the relationship between music and power. The symbolic practices through which subcultures state and reinforce identities have been widely documented (mainly in the field of Cultural, Gender and Postcolonial Studies), as has the increasingly political and revolutionary dimensions of popular music. Most studies have focused on the genres and movements that developed with and in the aftermath of the 1960’s counterculture. Yet little has been written about how the politics of popular music has reflected the social, geopolitical and technological changes of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, after the fall of Communism. Still, the music of the Arab Spring or of the Occupy and Indignados movements have been scarcely commented upon while they attest to significant changes in the way music is used by activists and revolutionaries today.

Images cinématographiques et « révolutions arabes »
L’IISMM et la Direction de l’audiovisuel de l’EHESS, en partenariat avec l’HiCSA de l’Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne organisent une table ronde avec des cinéastes (de films documentaires et de fiction) témoins et/ou engagés dans les transformations politiques et sociales qui bouleversent notamment la Tunisie, l’Egypte, la Syrie et le Yémen. L’objectif de cette rencontre est de croiser les questionnements des cinéastes avec les analyses de chercheurs en sciences sociales et d’étudier comment le cinéma permet la construction d’un regard sur ces événements par ailleurs abondamment présentés sur les petits écrans de télévision et d’ordinateur.
