Studying medieval buildings (1850-1950)

Actors, stakes and methods

The history of medieval architecture was written, from the mid-19^th century, by men whose training, career and objectives were variable. In fact, they each developed their methods of analysis and their reading grids of medieval buildings, which are at the origin of our practices in art history and archeology. To be interested in these men and their works: this is the purpose of this study day that will allow to implement, at the scale of Western Europe, this epistemological approach of the medieval sciences dedicated to the castral, civil or religious building. Beyond the monuments themselves, which take the place of a major source, correspondences of scientists, archives of learned societies, photographs, old drawings, or the funds of historical monuments, for example, may be used to deal with one or more of the topics presented below.

Building, decorating, discovering. New perspectives on the Church of Saint-Antoine-l'Abbaye

Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye a constitué, du XII^e au XV^e siècle, un foyer artistique des plus dynamiques aux portes des Alpes. Le chantier de construction de l’église abbatiale s’est notamment avéré propice à l’expression d’une architecture et d’un décor gothiques aux sources multiples. Au XVIII^e siècle, c’est aussi à proximité immédiate de l’édifice que se situait un cabinet de curiosités, dont les collections d’histoire naturelle reflétaient alors l’ouverture des Antonins aux sciences.

The Gothic structures: in pursuit of balance

Leur stabilité et leurs confortations à l’époque médiévale

Raised from 1242 to replace the Romanesque choir, the choir of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Tournai (Belgium) is resolutely an exemple of Gothic architecture the most advanced in the French royal domain. Besides a number of reasons, the verticality and slenderness of the construction, the fasciculated pillars, the buttressing thrown outward shows this well. Without participating in the rivalry of the first half of the 13th century to build the tallest cathedral, it plays nevertheless on the extremely lightweight of the construction, which was trying to reach on other contemporary sites. Beauvais is the most famous case, but it is not unique. In Tournai, as elsewhere, important stabilizing work was needed on these monuments that had « exceeded the limit ».

ESR / DYPAC laboratory seminar

Ce séminaire est proposé pour favoriser une réflexion commune au sein du laboratoire DYPAC, à propos du thème qui a été retenu comme axe transversal pour les cinq années à venir. Il s’agit aussi de mettre en œuvre une véritable transdisciplinarité, en réfléchissant en commun, avec les membres du laboratoire LAPA (recherche sur les archéomatériaux, CEA Saclay), sur les enjeux de l’étude des objets patrimoniaux, dont la préservation matérielle et la restauration demeure un défi pour les générations à venir. Il s’agira donc de confronter les problématiques et les compétences respectives de nos équipes sur l'objet spécifique que sont les collections (peintures, sculptures, livres, manuscrits, curiosa et objets scientifiques et techniques).

L'invention de l'espace

Journées européennes du patrimoine

Le Centre national d'études spatiales (CNES / 2 place Maurice Quentin, Paris Ier / Métro: Châtelet-Les Halles) ouvre exceptionnellement ses portes les 20 et 21 septembre, de 11h à 19h, à l'occasion des Journées européennes du patrimoine, pour une manifestation inédite intitulée « L'invention de l'espace ». Ce week-end sera l'occasion pour le grand public de découvrir de nombreux témoignages - patrimoine instrumental, paroles de scientifiques, pièces ethnologiques, engins spatiaux, archives de grands savants, œuvres d'art inspirées par l'espace, rencontres avec des experts, etc. - de ce lien si fort reliant l'homme et le cosmos.
