  Gendering Humanitarian Knowledge

  Global Histories of Compassion from the Mid-Nineteenth Century to the Present

  The conference invites scholars to think about the notion of "humanitarian knowledge" in a multidisciplinary way, by combining perspectives such as gender history, the histories ofemotions and the body, literary and visual culture studies, global health history, as well as the history of institutions and their agents. All of them are useful to explore the transnational networks through which humanitarian practices and ideas have been promoted, disseminated and standardised.The conference brings together scholars interested in working on the history of humanitarian knowledge from a gender perspective. The interventions deal with stories of flesh and blood, which put women’s and men’s humanitarian experiences at their centre, in order to inscribe their local practices within a global history of compassion from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

  From folklore to ethnology, a women's thing?

  Si interroger l’histoire de l’anthropologie sous l’angle du genre n’est pas faire œuvre de pionnier, poser la question en resserrant la focale sur le folklore et l’ethnologie du proche constitue une démarche plus inédite. Il s’agira en premier lieu de prendre acte du contraste que forme, des balbutiements de la discipline à nos jours, la place prise par les femmes. De l’invisibilité d’hier à la surreprésentation actuelle, l’on tentera de comprendre, en se fondant sur des portraits, individuels ou collectifs, l’incidence du genre dans les carrières de femmes ethnographes. Inversant la perspective, l’on envisagera également la manière dont une œuvre de folkloriste ou d’ethnologue peut participer d’une vie de femme.

  Defining and defying the concept of deviance and degeneration in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century

  This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19^th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

  Gender Summit 4 – Europe 2014

  From Ideas to Markets: Excellence in mainstreaming gender into research, innovation, and policy

  The Gender Summit 4 - Europe 2014 invites the contributions of researchers, innovation leaders and other R&I stakeholders on strategies, methodologies and best practice on putting gender equality into action. Abstracts will be reviewed by the international programme Scientific Committee for inclusion in the Summit programme and in the Summit publication. All selected contributions will be published in the Best Practice Guide. Authors may be invited to present their work orally in the Summit plenary, during working group sessions, or as poster presentations in the Summit Exhibition. Selected abstracts will be invited to produce a full paper for publication in the Summit proceedings. Abstracts need to be submitted using the structure and formatting of the submission template. They should address one or several of the Summit dimensions and indicate the appropriate thematic track. Deadline for abstract submission is the 30 March 2014.

  Enfanter : discours, pratiques et représentations de l’accouchement dans la France d’Ancien Régime

  Du Moyen Âge au grand siècle, les femmes ont exercé leur monopole sur la pratique des accouchements en ville comme à la campagne. Mais dès le XVII^e siècle, la médicalisation de la science obstétricale a opéré un bouleversement des rôles et induit, à la fin du XVIII^e siècle, une inversion faisant de ce territoire gynocentré un territoire désormais androcentré. L’objectif de ce colloque est de traiter la question selon une nouvelle approche en envisageant l’accouchement du point de vue du « genre ». Il s’agit de déterminer s’il a existé en France une science obstétricale féminine et masculine et d’en définir les caractéristiques sexuées à la lumière des textes et de l’iconographie, notamment en explorant dans une perspective comparatiste les pratiques, les théories et les pédagogies mis en place par les sages-femmes, par les chirurgiens accoucheurs et par les autorités religieuses.

  Table ronde franco-espagnole organisée par le musée d'Aquitaine et l'Institut Cervantès de Bordeaux

  L’expression « homme préhistorique » est utilisée depuis la naissance de la préhistoire comme science. Les recherches, faites par des préhistoriens hommes, ne permettaient pas d’appréhender la place des femmes dans les sociétés préhistoriques. Longtemps, les femmes n’ont eu comme images que les Vénus, statuettes ou gravures, liées à la fécondité. De nouvelles approches remettent en cause cette vision déformée des groupes préhistoriques. Cette table ronde abordera l’histoire des idées et des méthodes en préhistoire, ou comment les préjugés ont influencé nos connaissances et sur l’étude du sexe social dans les sociétés paléolithiques, à partir des représentations artistiques et de l’étude des sépultures afin de mieux comprendre les relations hommes-femmes au Paléolithique.
