The Multidisciplinary Grid 2020 Conference
The conference is aimed at examining the ‘grid’ as a cross-disciplinary theme with a multiplicity of expressions in terms of definitions, concepts, perceptions, representations, and histories. The ‘grid’ has played a significant role in shaping the spatial imaginaries of a wide range of fields: from Hippodamus of Miletus to the Cartesian revolution in mathematics, from the visual arts to archaeology to 'smart cities' and artificial intelligence. As the 'grid' has become an all-encompassing term, signifying a vast array of infrastructural and communication networks through which contemporary life is mediated and controlled, it is commonly viewed as a quintessential symbol of modernity. The conference strives to explore a new horizon of relationships and fusion of the ‘grids’ in these areas as manifested between humans, between machines, and between humans and machines ‒ bridging philosophical, cultural, pedagogical, technical and ethical issues.

Image, Cartography, Knowledge of the City after the Council of Trent ("In_bo" vol. 12, no. 16)
Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Italian political geography was polarized by a number of cities of different sizes and traditions: Rome and Florence, Milan and Naples, Genoa and Venice, Turin and Modena, either ancient republics or new dynastic capitals, satellites of the great European monarchies or small Signorias. The conjunction — less frequently the conflict — between the mandates of the Council of Trent and the interests of the ruling élites of those cities set the foundation for novel forms of social, cultural and spiritual control, fostering new urban structures and policies, deeply conditioned by the presence and government of the sacred.

Mississippi Delta Communities Facing Disappearing Land
"Still on the Map!" takes as its context the Mississippi Delta fifteen years after Hurricane Katrina and about five years after the commissioning of the major new "100-year" flood protection infrastructure. Expressed from its title -a statement of resistance/resilience chanted by many inhabitants during ecological events in Louisiana- this research project aims to describe the links and "attachments" (LATOUR, 2017) that different communities in the delta maintain with their geographical environment in a situation of strong ecological tipping point, integrating the natural and artificial infrastructures of the watershed into the definition of ecosystems as socio-political actors in their own right. In a context where the delta's land is gradually sinking into the sea, every hour the surface area of a football pitch is permanently flooded.

Tracing the city: city symphonies in reverse and the cinematic apparatus

What are city symphonies reflecting in their contemporary cinematic versions? How are filmic dispositifscapturing and documenting the city as an entity which is both subjective and intersubjective? As Richard Koeck suggests, in his essay Cine-spaces : Cinematic spaces in architecture and cities (2012), it is perhaps from the vantage point of the of the simulacrum that we must understand cinema's inscription within the post-modern city. Indeed, what if we began to think about the city as a visual system based on movements, lights and bodies – one we could explore in a cinematic, cinetic or kinesthesit way? By using film as a lens through which to see urban spaces and places, it would be less a question of showing the placement of architecture, but of seeing how much post-modern architecture, for instance, is a cinematic phenomenon, an urban décor in motion (Las Vegas, Dubai, Macao…).

Bodies in the city: norms and disparities in the 19th century
Arts et savoirs journal on OpenEdition
La recherche en littérature et en sciences humaines – les études dixneuviémistes en particulier – continuent de témoigner régulièrement de l'engouement suscité par la question de la représentation des corps, propice à une multiplicité d'approches et de croisements disciplinaires, qu'ont nourris en particulier les travaux d'Alain Corbin et Georges Vigarello. Les mutations que connaît l'espace urbain au XIXe siècle imposent aux corps de nouvelles normes, dont peuvent faire état le roman réaliste, la littérature dite panoramique ou encore la presse, et définissent dans le même temps de nouvelles marginalités. Dans un contexte qui se caractérise par un renouvellement des méthodes d’observation scientifique, mais aussi par des réaménagements urbains et l'inauguration de nouveaux lieux dans la ville, il s’agira d’interroger la scientificité du regard que porte le XIXe siècle sur les corps voués à occuper cet espace.

We seek proposals from post-doctoral scholars, recent PhDs, as well as those in the final stages of their dissertations with a background in related fields, in particular migration studies and social history, especially as they intersect with museum studies and/or public history. Participants will discuss, from a theoretical and a practical point of view, the best ways to display, in an exhibition context, the daily experience of past migrations in all their social dimensions.

Study day into models as a conception tool for architectural projects
Les maquettes sont des objets complexes se situant entre outils et sculptures, capables de représenter une diversité d’intentions. Pour cette raison, parler au pluriel permet de regrouper différentes « usages » des modèles réduits à trois dimensions. La journée d’étude propose d’interroger la valeur des maquettes comme outil actif de vérification constante et permanente de phases d’évolution du projet architectural, qu’il soit à l’échelle du bâtiment ou du territoire. La réalisation de maquettes d’étude est un des moments de conception de la forme. Elle se structure comme une sédimentation tridimensionnelle des concepts, laquelle permet de « vérifier l’espace » d’une façon différente des autres systèmes d’élaboration graphiques. Ces modèles sont conçus pour être éphémères, précaires et maniables, ils sont des œuvres involontaires d’une conception de l’espace. Le plus souvent, ils ne font pas l’objet d’archivage, et ce qui reste est parfois seulement un enregistrement visuel par l’image photographique.

Interdisciplinary perspectives
The conference aims to explore the relationships established between cinema and urban areas. We want to stress the connections woven between cities and cinema, films, fiction and documentaries – important unconventional sources for the understanding of social and cultural contexts. We intend to focus on the modalities used in films to tell stories – through images and speech – concerning cities, territories, and places, residents’ lives in relation to spaces, to buildings, to landscapes, as well as to its urban culture as a whole. The perspective we have chosen for this conference is interdisciplinary and cinema will be considered as a medium to be understood and interpreted in several, possibly comparative, ways.

The visual forms of the collective
De la peinture d’histoire du XIXe siècle aux grandes productions cinématographiques contemporaines, les œuvres visuelles ont tendance à traiter des actions, des émotions ou des événements collectifs en les incarnant dans une figure individuelle qui les emblématise. Cette stratégie a prouvé sa très grande efficacité, du point de vue visuel et du point de vue narratif ; cependant, elle a pour conséquence la rareté des formes visuelles du collectif comme tel. Plus difficile à représenter et peut-être aussi plus difficile à lire, le « collectif » est cependant un thème constant des représentations et des narrations visuelles contemporaines : peuples, masses, foules, multitudes, groupes, classes traversent l’histoire du monde contemporain en ne cessant d’y reposer le problème de l’existence d’un sujet collectif, rendant ainsi aigu et passionnant celui de sa figuration.

All about destruction
Conformément à ses trois éditions précédentes, l’objectif du colloque « Agir dans la ville. Art et politique dans l'espace urbain 4 : De la destruction » est de réunir des chercheurs issus de différents champs disciplinaires tels que l’architecture, l’histoire de l’art, la sociologie, l’anthropologie, la philosophie, les arts et sciences de la communication, les langues et lettres, la géographie, le droit ou les sciences historiques autour d’une analyse critique de la dimension politique des interventions dans les espaces urbains. Afin de faire du colloque une véritable plateforme d’échanges et de débats scientifiques, chaque intervenant disposera d’un temps de parole de 40 minutes suivi d’un échange avec l’assistance de 20 minutes. Dans cette perspective, il est attendu des participants qu’ils assistent à l’entièreté du colloque.

« Métropole Sensible » est un cycle de symposium annuel lancé en 2013 par le LERSEM IRSA-CRI. Il est conçu comme un laboratoire de réflexion et de débat autour de la ville et ses dimensions imaginaires et sensibles. Les symposiums se basent sur des axes épistémologiques et phénoménologiques dont l’objectif est de capter les variations des atmosphères et des ambiances de la métropole contemporaine en mettant l’accent d’une part sur une approche théorique consacrée à lire et analyser la ville et ses espaces et d’autre part sur une approche phénoménologique ayant pour dessein de décrypter les formes de l’imaginaire et les nouvelles sensibilités urbaines.

Methods of architectural and urban research
Si la méthode est une notion qui se fait discrète dans l’espace médiatisé de l’innovation architecturale et urbaine, selon nous, elle représente un levier justement, ou un obstacle, nécessaire à interroger pour renouveler (ou mieux définir) la recherche architecturale et urbaine. Bien que la recherche autour de ces deux disciplines ne soit pas nouvelle, ses méthodes demeurent finalement peu qualifiées. Une chose est certaine, ces deux disciplines n’ont, peut-être, été autant abordées sous des angles aussi divers : les dimensions sociales, politiques, techniques et esthétiques. Ainsi, il nous semble que mieux cerner les spécificités des méthodes de recherche architecturale et urbaine peut servir à fonder de nouvelles ressources d’actions politiques, éthiques et sociales, porteuses d’innovations.

Les disciplines scientifiques se référant à la carte mentale sont toujours plus nombreuses et les méthodes de recueil de plus en plus variées, entremêlant souvent des modes hybrides entre la représentation mentale ou cognitive, liée à la représentation sociale et à l'imaginaire collectif, le parcours commenté, le dessin réflexif, le jeu, l’enquête visuelle, les cartes collectives... Dans ces représentations spatiales, l’espace est un cadre – géographique, certes, mais également un espace social, de pratiques, psychologique, cognitif, politique, artistique, identitaire, symbolique, etc. L’idée est de savoir si l’on peut changer la dimension – ainsi que le support – de la carte mentale (2D, 3D, utilisation de drône, réalité augmentée, etc. ?).

Crossing French Metropolises: Exiled Artists and Intellectuals during the 20th century
Following “Arrival Cities: Migrating Artists and New Metropolitan Topographies”, the first conference of the ERC research project Relocating Modernism: Global Metropolises, Modern Art and Exile (METROMOD) held at the LMU Munich in November/December 2018, a workshop will be organized at the German Center for Art History (DFK Paris), on 4 July 2019. Building on common interests of the DFK Paris and METROMOD—such as movements of artists, ideas and productions—this workshop will focus on the temporary exile of artists and intellectuals in French cities throughout the twentieth century, which was marked by (e)migration waves. Located at the crossroads of disciplines such as Art History, Exile Studies, History of Sociology, Architecture and Urban Studies, this topic calls for a transdisciplinary approach.

Les Leçons de Rome propose un espace de réflexion et de débat pour quiconque appréhende l’Italie comme laboratoire de recherche architecturale, urbaine et paysagère. Définir l’Italie comme laboratoire suppose d’analyser les contextes de fabrication des politiques urbaines aussi bien que les expériences de projet, les théories comme les pratiques, les héritages et les mutations tout autant que les orientations et les prospectives. En quelques mots, construire un savoir et une culture, mais encore tirer des enseignements et développer des outils opératoires pour appréhender le présent et enrichir les pratiques contemporaines.
