À l'occasion de son vingtième anniversaire, le Collectif des centres de documentation en histoire ouvrière et sociale (CODHOS), dont les membres vivent et accompagnent au quotidien ces bouleversements, organise deux journées d’études pluridisciplinaires autour des sources de l’histoire sociale. Elles seront l’occasion de poursuivre les missions qu'il s'est fixées lors de sa création : organiser et favoriser les rencontres et les échanges entre chercheur·e·s en sciences sociales et archivistes, bibliothécaires, documentalistes et autres professionnel·le·s de la conservation, sur cette relation entre l’événement social et historique, l’archive produite et l’utilisation qui en est faite.

Intersectional Challenges in Afroeuropean Communities
8th Biennial Afroeuropeans Network Conference
The conference aims to consider how Afroeuropean communities are shaped by the intersections of ‘race’ and ethnicity with other markers of identification such as gender, class, sexuality, ability, age, citizenship status, language… Informed by intersectional thinking and its rejection of unidimensional perspectives in activism, policy and research, the conference explores how diverse processes of privileging and discrimination interact, making for complex and dynamic experiences of what it means to be Afroeuropean. It acknowledges that the racial and ethnic alterity of Afroeuropeans intersects with other identities (e.g. male, female, queer, working class, religious, disabled, aged…) and specifically seeks to examine to what extent these intersections create new alignments and opportunities.

La thématique est comprise au sens large, et questionne à la fois les relations entre l'évolution des corps et les identités individuelles, ou les performances, qu'elles soient artistiques, sportives, etc. Une approche davantage géographique et sociale permet d'envisager le sujet sous l'angle des déplacements et migrations ou des mouvements sociaux.

Migration: between cultural diversity, plurilingualism and sustainable development
La problématique de la migration des hommes et des peuples a toujours existé en Afrique et partout dans le monde. De tout temps, l’humain a senti le besoin de migrer vers des ailleurs plus propices à la sécurité, au commerce, à l’extension du patrimoine, au tourisme, au confort, etc. C’est pourquoi Ban Ki-Moon (secrétaire général de l’ONU de 2006 à 2017) estime que la migration est l’expression de l’aspiration humaine à la dignité, la sécurité et un futur meilleur. Elle fait partie du tissu social, de notre construction en tant que famille humaine. Revenant sur les raisons de la migration, Denis Drechsler et Jason Gagnon (2008, p.74) affirment que les individus migrent pour différentes raisons. Leur déplacement peut être forcé, pour cause de conflit, de politique migratoire, de dangers environnementaux ou technologiques, de maladie ou de déportation politique. Mais l’émigration est dans la majorité des cas une décision personnelle ou familiale prise pour un motif économique.

The utopia of globalised culture and the reality of local communication practices
Communication and digital technology in Francophone sub-Saharan Africa
The imaginary world surrounding digital communication seems to impose a vision that crushes cultural diversity. The Symposium aims to jointly explore the heterogeneity of uses, productions and issues raised by the meeting of globalised technology that is often Western-centred, with various cultures. The first edition will focus on Francophone sub-Saharan Africa, a multicultural territory where contemporary geopolitical contexts pose particularly vital issues for communications research. These issues are of interest mainly to the information and communication sciences community, but the contributions of researchers from various cultural and disciplinary horizons will make it possible to tackle this very broad problem of communication, especially digital, in sensitive areas, according to different complementary approaches.

Tribute to Étienne Tassin
Le monde, selon Étienne Tassin (1955-2018), est le commun qui se tisse entre des acteurs et des actrices qui ne partagent aucune communauté préalable, mais qui fait naitre un réseau de relations accueillant la division et la conflictualité. Agir politiquement n’est pas se soucier de soi mais se soucier du monde, dans une perspective cosmo-politique, réactivée de nos jours comme « politique des étrangers non pas faite à leur intention mais en leur compagnie ». Corrélativement, « prendre soin du monde, Amor mundi », désigne aussi « la signification politique de l’activité de penser ». Qui était Étienne ? Que nous donnent à penser l’œuvre qu’il laisse mais aussi sa façon d’être au monde ? Venu-e-s pour une part d’Outre-mer, d’Outre-Atlantique et d’Afrique, ceux et celles qui lui rendront hommage tenteront d’en témoigner.

The international conference Breaking Boundaries: Academia, Activism and the Arts proposes to bring into focus and critically question common grounds and boundaries between and within the Humanities, political activity and aesthetic production.At a time when boundaries are simultaneously questioned and reinforced – for example between geographical territories, political states, public and private spheres, gendered bodies, creative media, theory and practice, local and global, human, non-human and post-human – the question of what such frontiers stand for, and how and why they might be transgressed offers itself for and, indeed, urges discussion.

AFIELD mentorship program (2019)
For the first time AFIELD launches an open call to support 3 individuals engaged in social and artistic experimentation. They will be granted seed funding to develop their initiatives and advice from a mentor chosen with them within the AFIELD network, for a period of 18 months. Initiated in 2014 by Council and supported by Tsadik Foundation, AFIELD is a network, a fellowship and an advocacy program for social initiatives from arts and culture. Each year the program supports artists, researchers or activists committed to a long-term social initiative by identifying 2 fellows and 3 mentees.

Dispossession: Agency, ecology and theatrical reality
TaPRA Theatre, Performance and Philosophy Working Group
In Ursula Le Guin’s 1974 novel The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia, children are educated to engage only with what interests others; the opposite is considered self-indulgence, condemned as “egoizing”. The disowning of any idea of the self is considered a virtue, as is the ability to speak the language of others. Le Guin’s novel fictionalises a common narrative in processes of 20th and early 21st century art: the withdrawal of the self. In relation to concurrent processes that reclaim agency for those who are already dispossessed, that call for the legitimisation of systematically marginalised voices, is the withdrawal of the self merely a privilege? How might wilful dispossession and agency be related through difference, as interconnected transitions of power, in such a way that reveals theatricality in the construction of reality?

L’UNESCO nous rappelle que la diversité linguistique et le multilinguisme sont essentiels pour le développement durable, mais l’attention se porte essentiellement sur les langues menacées et place la sauvegarde de la diversité linguistique sur le même plan que la biodiversité. La question des langues en danger est en effet essentielle, et quelques études suggèrent que la disparition des langues présente des risques importants pour la conservation de la biodiversité. Ce que nous voulons faire apparaître, c’est que les langues entrent en jeu dans tous les processus économiques, sociaux et culturels qui sont à la base du développement. La culture, l’éducation et la santé sont des facteurs de développement majeurs dont l’accumulation du capital est plus une conséquence qu’une cause et, où que l’on se place dans le monde, on peut en faire le constat, le rôle de la langue est omniprésent.

Narrating Postmigration: Interdisciplinary Approaches
These study days at Aix-Marseille Université aim to gather junior and advanced scholars working in the broad field of postmigration studies. Within this scope, we will focus on postmigration narratives – a notion that encompasses both fictional narratives and narratives documented in ethnographies – understood as narrative forms that that do not primarily refer to a migration event but rather “the transformation and cultural mixing processes that it produces for future generations” (Geiser 2008 127). Our objective is to produce a comparative dialogue between literary studies and social sciences that is based on a common understanding of postmigration narratives as migration heritage.

The social history of black populations in France
Depuis plusieurs années, des travaux étudient les formes de racialisation subies, ou revendiquées par certains groupes dans la société française, en particulier par les populations noires. Ils invitent également à analyser les usages sociaux de la notion de race – entendue comme un fait social et non biologique – en France et ils interrogent de façon générale la place à accorder à la « question raciale » dans l’historiographie française. Quelle histoire sociale des populations noires ces travaux permettent-ils de construire ? Dans quelle mesure, la catégorie « populations noires » est-elle pertinente et que peut-elle apporter ? Sur le plan empirique, force est de constater que les groupes susceptibles de s’inscrire dans cette catégorie sont plus ou moins bien connus. Comment dépasser la réduction de cette catégorie à des élites sociales ou militantes souvent bien étroites ?

Small farmers in mountainous and forested hinterlands
Contexts, constraints and strategies
For centuries, small farmers (SFs) have made their living in the mountainous and forested areas of the Mediterranean hinterland, away from centres of power. These places have historically been places of refuge for the populations driven out from the plains. Nowadays, the SFs in the mountains and the forests, which have become more mixed and gradually more part of national entities, are paradoxically suffering from geographical remoteness and economic and social marginality. And yet, beyond the physical and the cultural environments’ diversity and the relationships forged with the urbanised foreland, these same communities are developing adaptive practices on the basis of specific features that continue to be sensitive to various kinds of risk and uncertainty that public policy is unable to diminish.

Cet appel à contributions vise la publication d’un ouvrage collectif qui décrypte et analyse la paradiplomatie identitaire anglophone au Cameroun. En privilégiant une approche transversale, il est question d’interroger la manière dont, sur le plan international, les minorités anglophones s'organisent et se mobilisent au bénéfice de leur communauté. Les différentes contributions devront éclairer des problématiques telles que la conception et la mise en œuvre de la paradiplomatie identitaire ; les objectifs poursuivis ; les discours énoncés ; les acteurs impliqués ; les ressources mobilisées ; les contraintes existantes et les horizons de ces relations internationales.

Insularities and enclaves in colonial and post-colonial circumstances
Crossings, conflicts and identitarian constructions (15th - 21st centuries)
Historically, archipelagos were considered as rehearsal spaces for new social constructions. Since colonization and, afterwards, colonialism and imperialism, many of them evolved in association with the strengthening of international networks, while others did not escape isolation and forced unequal integration in different spaces. On the other hand, enclaves were the outcome of historical circumstances, often externally decided, which prompted some degree of insularity regarding the immediate geographical surroundings. When those territories did not become independent, there were demands for autonomy or, at least, some underlying emancipatory and anti-colonialist feelings. Even when these feelings did not mobilize relevant segments of the population, they disclose the alterity – above all cultural – in regard to sovereignty.

Dialectics of Dread and Refuge

In A Grammar of the Multitude, Paolo Virno discriminates between the Kantian view of the dialectic of dread and refuge, which is based on a distinction between particular danger and absolute danger (also articulated by Heidegger through the distinction between fear and anguish) and the collapse of this distinction in the post-Fordist world, in which "the dividing line between fear and anguish, between relative dread and absolute dread, is precisely what has failed." (Virno 2004, 32) If post-Fordist institutions rely on a culture of pervasive dread – manifest as fear and anxiety – how do we resist this nearly intangible culture today? Arguably, we are moving beyond the sort of entrenched paralysis Virno speaks of, towards a new sort of political breakthrough, a manner of imagining life not determined by institutional cultures of fear and anxiety. Yet much thinking needs still to be done around the ways in which we engage in concerted resistance: do we fight within institutional walls – and if so, how do we resist systems of perpetual visibilisation – the gaze of securitization that renders us so exposed? What does this fight look like? Do we exit – and if so, where to? Is there a new underground?
