A handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches

On June 18th and 19th 2020 the Badische Landesbibliothek organizes the international and interdisciplinary congress “The return of the Wigalois - a handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches”. The congress presents and discusses first results of the again possible scientific altercation with materiality of the handwriting, its production context and the book market at the upper Rhine, for which it was produced.

Text as object in the Middle Ages

The International Medieval Congress (IMC) is the largest medieval studies conference in the world. In line with the Special Thematic Strand in 2019 “Materialities” and the recent creation of the strand “Manuscript studies”, we organize sessions on “Text as object in the Middle Ages”. Texts, indeed, are at the same time an idea and a form. The latter is the result of a combination of inherited social uses and specific intentions by the various actors involved in transmitting the text as idea. This process begins with the authors, continues to the craftsmen (parchment and paper makers, copyists and chancery clerks, painters and illuminators, sculptors and weavers, booksellers…) and then on to possessors, readers, archives and libraries. All textual artefacts are concerned: manuscripts, charters, inscriptions, tapestries, seals, coins, etc.

Troy in medieval Europe

From one language to another, from one culture to another

Beginning with the Chronicle of Frédégaire (8^thcentury), the myth of the Trojan origin of the European peoples spread all over medieval Europe. In the Old French linguistic area, in the 12^th century, Benoît de Sainte-Maure «translated » the latin prose accounts of Darès and Dictys in his verse Roman de Troie, a widely successful poem, as demonstrated by its numerous copies, and by the many prose versions and other adaptations composed throughout the Middle Ages.This conference will investigate how and why the subject of Troy became immensely popular in neighboring linguistic areas (England, Spain, Italy, Germany and all of Northern Europe) and fostered various literary undertakings. The investigation may follow two courses: a comparative one establishing and/or questioning filiations between vernacular versions, and a more global one highlighting relationships and interplay across disciplinary boundaries and literary genres.

Célébrant le douzième centenaire de l'élection épiscopale d'Agobard de Lyon (816-840), le colloque international Lyon carolingien mesure la part prise par Lyon dans l'empire de Louis le Pieux : la cité est une capitale intellectuelle et religieuse dont l'originalité vient relativiser l'uniformité du monde carolingien. Forte d'une tradition érudite exceptionnelle, incarnée par une bibliothèque épiscopale d'une extrême richesse, l'Église de Lyon résiste au centralisme franc tout en profitant du dynamisme politique du premier IX^e siècle.

The translation of the vernacular in Latin between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance

Si la traduction est la forme la plus répandue de transfert des idées et des savoirs, la traduction vers le latin des oeuvres nées vernaculaires – phénomène né au Moyen Âge – apparaît aux XV^e et XVI^e siècles comme en pleine mutation. L’étude de cette technique intellectuelle, souvent associée à la pratique du commentaire, doit tenir compte de l’émergence d’une littérature originale dans les différentes langues vernaculaires tardomédiévales, de l’apparition du livre imprimé qui modifie considérablement la diffusion des oeuvres et des bouleversements politiques et religieux, la Réforme et la Contre-Réforme ayant utilisé de manière très différente le latin, langue de l’Église et langue des savoirs occidentaux. Ces journées d'étude examineront les modalités de la traduction vers le latin dans les différents champs du savoir et dans les différentes aires culturelles de l'Europe tardomédiévale.

Textual (id)entities in late medieval Europe (13th-15th c.)

Dans le cadre du projet de recherche OPVS ("Old Pious Vernacular Successes), financé par le conseil européen de la recherche de novembre 2010 à octobre 2015 (www.opus.fr), un colloque est organisé au sujet des identités textuelles au cours du Moyen Âge tardif. Celui-ci se tiendra à Lausanne en février 2013.
