Etymological Theories and Practice in Ancient and Byzantine Greece
Third Etygram Conference
This international conference, to be held in Thessaloniki in November 2021 aims to attract researchers, mainly philologists, linguists and philosophers interested in ancient practices of etymologizing in Ancient Greek and Byzantine literature. It is promoted by the International Association ETYGRAM devoted to the study of indigenous (or “emic”) ancient Greek etymologies and follows two editions in 2016 and 2018.

The ERC Advanced Grant Project 741182 MAP (Mapping Ancient Polytheisms. Cult Epithets as an Inteface between Religious Systems and Human Agency), led by Corinne Bonnet, is now accepting applications for a postdoctoral position (100%) from the 01/03/2021 at the Université Toulouse – Jean Jaurès. This call for applications is addressed, in particular, to researchers in the history of the religions of antiquity, with an excellent knowledge of ancient Greek and a good familiarity with epigraphical corpora.

Guest researchers ERC "Mapping Ancient Polytheisms"
The ERC Advanced Grant MAP 741182 project has budgetary support available in order to invite researchers. These stays can be from 2 to 4 months per researcher, with the exclusion of the months of July and August (due to the fact that the university is closed for a large part of the summer). Guest researchers will work within the team, exchanging therein and participating in the improvement of the databases. Guest researchers will equally be requested to take part in MAP scientific activities (seminars, workshops, conferences…). The position of guest researcher and this call for applications is open to everybody, of French or foreign nationality, whose competences and project are deemed to be of interest to the MAP project.

Denunciation or dissimulation? Medical error in Antiquity and the Middle Ages
Greece, Rome, Egypt, Near-East
Mediator, Depakine, Thalidomides, contaminated blood, breast implants... health scandals over the past fifty years have regularly focused general attention on the problem of medical risk. They have raised many questions, abundantly relayed by the different media, showing us how crucial and complex the question of medical error is: where did the error come from? But before becoming a scandal, medical error has also been an inherent risk in the practice of medicine, since its very beginning. A mistake in diagnosis, prognosis or therapy, no matter how small, can have disastrous consequences for the doctor and the patient if not detected and corrected. Far from the huge media coverage of current health scandals, what is the status of medical error in ancient medicines and what are its issues?

Un atelier du projet ANR AgroCCol, qui sera consacré aux regards des archéologues sur les textes anciens. Nous aurons le plaisir d’y entendre deux conférences, suivies de discussions. Le projet AgroCCol a pour ambition d’analyser les modes d’élaboration et de transmission du savoir agronomique antique à partir du deuxième livre du De re rustica de Columelle (Ier siècle après J.-C.) et de la thématique de la culture des céréales et des légumineuses.

The Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) is seeking articles dealing with philosophical issues that arise in connection with the conception of conflict and violence within Plato’s philosophy. Conflict and violence are often regarded as two of Plato’s main interests in his political thought, especially when he discusses the dread and danger they bring to the city. However, is it possible to understand conflict and violence in Plato’s work only from this political and rather pejorative standpoint? It is possible to see conflict and violence in Plato’s philosophy as something else, rather than a threat to the harmony of the community?

Ancient deviance: the city and the challenge of transgression
Le laboratoire junior TAntALE se propose de poursuivre sa réflexion autour de la notion de transgression dans l'Antiquité en s'appuyant sur le concept sociologique de déviance. Qui sont les outsiders antiques ? Les domaines de la religion, – rites à mystère, superstitions, pratiques déviantes au temps du premier christianisme –, de la sexualité, du genre et des rapports sociaux sont autant de thématiques qui pourront être abordées. Quels sont les mécanismes sociaux, juridiques, moraux mis en œuvre par la communauté pour contrôler les pratiques déviantes et les rejeter aux marges de l'espace politique ? Comment la production textuelle peut-elle représenter un espace réflexif où se rejouent ces dynamiques ? Comprendre les ressorts de la déviance dans l'Antiquité grecque et romaine, sa réalité et sa perception, sera l’enjeu de cette troisième journée d'étude.

Shame is a fundamental social emotion in Mediterranean cultures, which (still nowadays) place a strong and structuring value on honour, and ancient literature bears its mark. From the outset, it is also an ambivalent emotion, with contrasting faces, as evidenced by the semantic differences and overlaps of the doublet αἰσχύνη/αἰδώς. The historical field targeted by the scientific committee of the colloquium is broad, where existing studies preferentially focus on archaic poetic texts (Homer, tragic poets) and on classical authors, Plato and especially Aristotle. The conference Shame and Virtue proposes, from and beyond this period, to extend the investigation to Hellenistic schools, the Roman world and ancient Christianity. In this field, which articulates various types of pluralism (historical, political, linguistic, religious), the papers presented will help to explore the ambivalent relationship between shame and virtue in antiquity.ng

The ERC MAP Seminar “The Names of the Gods! 4: Exploring the potentials of the name in images, in narratives” pursues the investigation on the systems of naming of the divine. By focusing on names, images and narratives, we will look for connections but also discrepancies, in order to highlight, from duly selected cases or files, the specifications of the different languages used to unfold the potentials of the divine names. In the spirit of the MAP project, we will pay special attention to the links that the names, the images and the narratives convey.

Writing, rewriting or quotation: the processes of composition of ancient medical texts
Les vastes sommes médicales antiques qui rassemblent et transmettent les savoirs de leur temps comportent de nombreux textes « parallèles », qui posent des questions intéressant tous les chercheurs de l'Antiquité : diversité des sources, place de la transmission orale, modes de réappropriation des textes, rôle et statut de l'auteur d'une encyclopédie. À l’heure où se multiplient encyclopédies en ligne et réflexions sur la propriété intellectuelle, le statut de l’auteur ou encore le plagiat, la réflexion sur les procédés de composition des ancêtres les plus lointains de Wikipédia permettra de s’interroger sur l’élaboration du savoir médical et les différents canaux de sa transmission.

En 2004, Ralph Keyes publie son essai, The post-truth era, Dishonesty and Deception in Contemporary Life, popularisant le terme post-truth, élu mot de l’année 2016 par le Dictionnaire d’Oxford. Dans cette ère « post-vérité », ne peut-on au moins juger du discours politique à l’aune de la vérité des faits réels. Il ne faut pourtant pas oublier que le pouvoir politique a toujours eu partie liée à la fiction, et constitue ce que Patrick Boucheron, dans son enseignement au Collège de France, nomme une « fiction politique », soit « la forme narrative de la théorie politique », qui dédouble sur le plan symbolique l’agir politique. Quels écarts entre le discours politique et la réalité que nous vivons ? Sommes-nous les dupes plus ou moins consentantes de la fiction politique ?

Post-doc position
Dans le cadre du projet de recherche « Contenus et corpus numériques » (CORNUM), financé par la région Normandie, l’équipe de recherche interdisciplinaire sur les aires culturelles (ERIAC – université de Rouen Normandie EA 4705) et l’Institut de recherches interdisciplinaires homme et société (IRIHS- FED 4137) recrutent un post-doctorant pour un contrat de 9 mois à partir de l’automne 2019. Le post-doctorant devra assurer l’analyse et l’étude du corpus du sous-projet « Éditions génétiques numériques des textes antiques : le corpus philosophique de Cicéron » (eGesta), sous la direction du Pr. Clara Auvray-Assayas. Il accompagnera également le porteur et les chercheurs de ce sous-projet dans la conception et la réalisation d’une plateforme d’édition scientifique inédite.

The unexamined song of prose - rhythms of ancient prose

Si la prose est bien une forme à part, le rythme de la prose ne saurait s’analyser sans prendre en compte le rapport qu’elle entretient avec la poésie. L’histoire des formes littéraires montre que l’essoufflement de la poésie mène toujours à une prose rythmée, qui récupère des éléments rythmiques délaissés par les poètes : vocabulaire, figures, sonorités, diction et rythmes. La prose oratoire témoigne d’un travail sur les formules, qui mettent en évidence l’acte performatif du discours plutôt que la langue elle-même. La prose latine hérite, à l’époque hellénistique, des deux formes en opposition au IVe siècle, le style sériel, catalogique (eiroménè) et le style périodique (katestramménè) décrits par Aristote dans la Rhétorique.
