Canadian Communication Association (CCA) Annual Conference 2021
As a theme, “Northern Relations” encourages delegates to explore the connections between peoples, communities, cultures, and ways of knowing, while also listening to those voices that speak directly to some of the most pressing matters of relation (to the land, to each other) in the North: climate change, governance, social justice, reconciliation, reciprocity, education, and much more. A relation is not only an association and an affiliation, it is also an act of telling or reporting; relations are at the heart of how peoples communicate, organize knowledge, and understand their place in the world.

The utopia of globalised culture and the reality of local communication practices
Communication and digital technology in Francophone sub-Saharan Africa
The imaginary world surrounding digital communication seems to impose a vision that crushes cultural diversity. The Symposium aims to jointly explore the heterogeneity of uses, productions and issues raised by the meeting of globalised technology that is often Western-centred, with various cultures. The first edition will focus on Francophone sub-Saharan Africa, a multicultural territory where contemporary geopolitical contexts pose particularly vital issues for communications research. These issues are of interest mainly to the information and communication sciences community, but the contributions of researchers from various cultural and disciplinary horizons will make it possible to tackle this very broad problem of communication, especially digital, in sensitive areas, according to different complementary approaches.

Breaking boundaries: academia, activism and the arts
The international conference Breaking Boundaries: Academia, Activism and the Arts proposes to bring into focus and critically question common grounds and boundaries between and within the Humanities, political activity and aesthetic production.At a time when boundaries are simultaneously questioned and reinforced – for example between geographical territories, political states, public and private spheres, gendered bodies, creative media, theory and practice, local and global, human, non-human and post-human – the question of what such frontiers stand for, and how and why they might be transgressed offers itself for and, indeed, urges discussion.

Activism speeches in environmental controversies: social constructions, legitimisations, limitations
Judging by their increase, envirnomnental controversies are a social phenomenon (Notre-Dame-des-Landes Airport, the Sivens dam in France, or the industrialization of goldbearing mines in French Guiana, the exploitation of shale gas in Algeria, the Dakota Access Pipeline in the USA…). Each of them is based on a series of individuals who rise up and express themselves in favor of or against these projects. This symposium aims to study controversies both rhetorical process and means of publicising. We would like to observe how activists forge their discourses and argumentations, how they justify their speeches, as well as the effects of these speeches in the public arenas.

Black populations in France (2015-2016)
New historical and historiographical dimensions
Depuis quelques années, des travaux étudient les formes de racialisation subies ou revendiquées par certains groupes dans la société française, en particulier par les populations noires. Ils invitent également à analyser les usages sociaux de la notion de race (entendue comme un fait social et non biologique) en France et ils interrogent de façon générale la place à accorder à la « question raciale » dans l’historiographie française. Quelle histoire sociale des populations noires ces travaux permettent-ils de construire ? Dans quelle mesure, la catégorie « populations noires » est-elle pertinente et que peut-elle apporter ? Sur le plan empirique, force est de constater que les groupes susceptibles de s’inscrire dans cette catégorie sont plus ou moins bien connus. Comment dépasser la réduction de cette catégorie à des élites sociales ou militantes souvent bien étroites ?

(Il)Legitimacy and conflict in discourses in the public space
Ce numéro de la revue Études de communication se propose d’interroger la conflictualité sémantique et les luttes pour l’hégémonie (au sens de Gramsci) qui se jouent dans les espaces publics, qu’ils soient matériels, immatériels, médiatiques ou en ligne (médias traditionnels et/ou alternatifs, forum internet, réunion publique, scène slam / spoken word, séries télévisées…). Son objectif est de questionner d’une part, les processus de (non) reconnaissance (Honneth, 2000 [1995]; Voirol, 2005) et de (non) légitimation de discours sociaux, faits de paroles, actes, représentations ou idéologies qui se manifestent dans une ou plusieurs arènes publiques, d’autre part, les rapports (y compris de pouvoir) entre la sphère publique globale, nationale, dominante et les micro-espaces publics. Il s’agit en outre de porter attention à la formation d’arènes publiques à partir de discours, représentations, idéologies parfois contradictoires et de groupes aux intérêts divergents, ainsi qu’à la place de ces espaces de coalition dans les logiques d’hégémonisation (Laclau, Mouffe, 2009 [1985]).

Les médias ont souvent été appréhendés comme un laboratoire du genre, source et vecteur d’une conception normative et hiérarchisée des représentations qui lui sont associées. S’ils reproduisent les normes dominantes, des éléments transgressifs, voire subversifs, émergent parfois au sein de ces espaces, déstabilisant les assignations sexuées et les oppositions binaires. L’objectif de cette journée d’études est de mettre en lumière ces possibilités, en articulation avec les différents moments du temps médiatique (discours, production, réception). -

Communication and social change in Africa - 3rd Edition
Faiblement connecté au reste du monde, en mal d’investissements et d’infrastructures, pendant longtemps, le continent africain a été considéré comme un laissé-pour-compte dans le mouvement d’émergence et de développement des Tic. Une opinion assez généralement partagée qui se traduit aussi par un manque d’intérêt de chercheurs européens, notamment en sciences de l’information et de la communication, pour étudier les industries culturelles & créatives ainsi que les Tic dans le contexte africain, tandis que le continent semble sur ces terrains attirer de nouveaux acteurs émergeants (soft power chinois et qatari, inversion des flux migratoires Europe vers Afrique, notamment portugais…). Ce colloque se donne pour objectif de contribuer à combler ce manque en privilégiant surtout les recherches basées sur une solide connaissance de terrain pour pouvoir dégager une vision plus globale des spécificités du continent africain dans toute sa diversité en ce qui concerne le domaine des Tic ainsi que des industries culturelles et créatives.

Historical breaks, biographical constructions and collective mobilisations
Le discours médiatique construit l’événement comme un phénomène inattendu, aléatoire, imprévisible. Il a tendance à isoler l’événement et de le traiter dans son immédiateté. Inversement, les sciences humaines et sociales ont parfois tendance à remettre en cause l’imprévisibilité (autant des causes que des conséquences) d’un événement, en recontextualisant les raisons de son surgissement et en analysant l’instrumentalisation dont il fait l’objet.
