Traces, récits et représentations du cannibalisme en Océanie
Où en sont les connaissances scientifiques à propos des pratiques anthropophages en Océanie, auxquelles il est encore souvent fait référence de nos jours ? Le colloque qui se tiendra à l’université de la Nouvelle-Calédonie propose d’interroger les sources historiques, archéologiques, littéraires, orales, juridiques ou judiciaires qui évoquent le cannibalisme. Nous invitons les chercheur-ses des différentes sciences sociales et humaines à apporter leur contribution à cet « état de l’art », vingt ans après la grande exposition « Kannibals et Vahinés ». La réflexion pourra s'appuyer sur des études de cas, sur une analyse épistémologique ou méthodologique, l’objectif n'étant pas de prouver ou d'infirmer les pratiques cannibales, mais bien d'en interroger les sources, les stratégies d'appropriation et d'en déconstruire les discours.

L’association des Rencontres d’archéologie et d’histoire en Périgord consacrera son colloque annuel, qui se tiendra comme chaque année depuis plus d’un quart de siècle à Périgueux, au thème mourir au château (Xe-XXIe siècle). Ce choix impose d’envisager une typologie des trépas liée au cadre châtelain, capable d’évoluer dans la longue durée. Le château peut être le lieu de décès « ordinaires » mais aussi de morts violentes, précipitées, imprévues, accidentelles ou préméditées, voire d’assassinats. Afin de limiter le nombre des exemples qui ont fait des châteaux d’ultimes refuges ou des repaires de violences intérieures ou extérieures, on pourrait retenir les endroits précis où se déroulent ces morts : cachots, douves et ponts-levis, cuisines, chambres, escaliers.

The Illuminated Legal Manuscript: Production, Circulation and Use in Medieval Europe
International Workshop of the research team Ius Illuminatum
The workshop has the aim of giving an overview of the progress of research regarding illuminated legal manuscripts in Europe with the aim of carrying out a reflection on the methodological implications and on the practical and theoretical challenges that such research entails. During the Workshop, different case of study related to some regions of the European territory will be analyzed with a particular attention to what concerns the production, use and circulation of the different manuscripts examined. The Workshop also aims to question the potential offered by new technologies and the interdisciplinary approach in the study of the illuminated legal manuscript in order to overcome the limits and open up innovative and fruitful research paths.

Women and Violence in the Late Medieval Mediterranean, ca. 1100-1500
A two-days international conference
The last decades have witnessed an increased interest in research on the relationship between women and violence in the Middle Ages, with new works both on female criminality and on women as victims of violence. The contributions of gender theory and feminist criminology have renewed the approached used in this type of research. Nevertheless, many facets of the complex relationship between women and violence in medieval times still await to be explored in depth. This conference aims to understand how far the roots of modern assumptions concerning women and violence may be found in the late medieval Mediterranean, a context of intense cultural elaboration and exchange which many scholars have indicated as the cradle of modern judicial culture. While dialogue across the Mediterranean was constant in the late Middle Ages, occasions for comparative discussion remain rare for modern-day scholars, to the detriment of a deeper understanding of the complexity of many issues. Thus, we encourage specialists of different areas across the Mediterranean (Western Europe, Byzantium, and the Islamic world) to contribute to the discussion. What were the main differences and similarities? How did these change through time? What were the causes for change? Were coexisting assumptions linking femininity and violence conflicting or collaborating?

While recent work has renewed our knowledge of medieval execution sites and of the internal layout of detention facilities, much remains to be done to understand the distribution of prison spaces and territories, in particular to shed light on the socio-spatial dynamics and logic of their establishment. These prison spaces evolved between the beginning and the extreme end of the Middle Ages, with prisons only multiplying from the 13th century onwards. These evolutions must be understood in close coordination with the evolutions of medieval justice and its spatial practices. Studies can be carried out at the scale of a building, a neighborhood, a city, a city, one or more regions.

The Max Planck Research Group III investigates the emergence and development of the system of post-Tridentine global governance of the Catholic Church in depth from an interdisciplinary perspective over an extended period of time. It will do so by analysing the activity of the Congregations of the Council, the dicastery responsible for appropriately implementing the Council decisions in the entire Catholic world. We are now looking to recruit as soon as possible (but no later than 1 April 2019) two doctoral students who will develop a doctoral thesis preferably focused on the history of the Congregation of the Council in the early modern period (XVI-XVIII century).

6th Colloquium on Crime and Criminal Justice in Early Modern and Modern Times
The colloquium provides an open forum for discussion, debate and the presentation of PhD-, postdocand other research projects related to the history of crime and justice in the early modern and modernperiod. It aims for an interdisciplinary exchange between scholars of a wide range of subjects suchas history, legal history, sociology, anthropology, ethnology, humanities, political science and others. Core issues that will be addressed are various forms of crime and delinquency, law and normativity, criminal prosecution and justice, punishment and social control as well as sources and methodicalapproaches. We also invite contributions of scholars who would like to enter into a dialogue with researchers from the field of crime and criminal justice even though the mentioned topics would onlyconstitute a part of the respective projects. The colloquium focuses on elites in a political, economic, social or cultural context, their role inthe administration of justice and the legal system as well as specific forms of deviance and delinquency of such groups.

26th archaeology and history in Périgord conference
Ce thème a fait l’objet de nombreuses recherches depuis plus d’un siècle, surtout de la part des juristes. Des historiens ont abordé cette question dans des études plus vastes sur les paysans et/ou les seigneurs dans une province particulière. À partir des années 1990, l’étude de la justice seigneuriale a fait l’objet de travaux spécifiques, qui ont permis de réexaminer une institution longtemps décriée. Au début des années 2000, Benoît Garnot et Antoine Follain ont contribué à une réhabilitation raisonnée et argumentée permettant de mieux comprendre ce que la justice seigneuriale représente, du Moyen Âge à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, pour le seigneur et le monde rural et urbain. Les Rencontres d’archéologie et d’histoire en Périgord proposent, lors de ce colloque, de faire le point, voire d’ouvrir de nouveaux axes de recherche en insistant sur la dimension européenne et/ou comparative.

Cet appel à communications est dédié à un atelier de jeunes chercheurs dont l'objectif sera de faire un état des lieux de la recherche concernant la question de la réforme grégorienne, de sa définition et de la compréhension de ses enjeux, dans les espaces francophones et germanophones, dans une démarche non seulement comparatiste, mais aussi transdisciplinaire, puisqu'il s'agira d'interroger l'état de la question aussi bien en histoire politique qu'en histoire du droit, en histoire de l'art qu'en théologie, par exemple. Cet atelier de jeunes chercheurs est organisé par Tristan Martine (université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, CIHAM-UMR 5648) et Jérémy Winandy (universität Hamburg).

Circulation des savoirs juridiques et enseignement du droit
L’histoire des transferts culturels fait preuve aujourd’hui d’un dynamisme inédit. La relecture récente des phénomènes nationaux à la lumière des échanges internationaux et des flux transnationaux contribue à redéfinir la façon dont les frontières nationales sont à considérer, particulièrement pour le XIXe siècle où le modèle de l’État-nation s’est développé. L’importance des mouvements transnationaux affecte des domaines à la fois politiques, économiques, sociaux ou encore scientifiques. Le droit et les savoirs juridiques ne sont évidemment pas exempts de ces transferts. Les transferts culturels et la circulation des savoirs reposent sur un substrat de facteurs variés. Se pencher sur la question des professeurs de droit allemands en Belgique ce n’est pas s’éprendre uniquement de la question du droit, de l’enseignement du droit et des influences entre aires nationales juridiques. C’est également aborder des terrains qui ont trait à l’histoire des idées, des migrations, de la science et plus globalement de la vie académique.

Rationality and irrationality: madness in the Renaissance

Au tout début de son Histoire de la folie (1961), Michel Foucault développe l’idée selon laquelle la folie, à la fin du Moyen Âge, perdait progressivement son pouvoir cosmique et menaçant pour devenir l’envers de la raison : « la folie ne guette plus l’homme aux quatre coins du monde ; elle s’insinue en lui, ou plutôt elle est un rapport subtil que l’homme entretient avec lui-même ». En interrogeant cette hypothèse de Foucault, notre journée d’étude s’intéressera de plus près au rapport entre raison et déraison à la Renaissance. L’approche se veut pluridisciplinaire et sur une période qui va de Pétrarque à Descartes, respectant le champ de recherche traditionnel du Centre d'études supérieures de la Renaissance.
