Medieval literary seminar
Beaucoup d’œuvres médiévales nous sont parvenues inachevées, pour ne citer que les exemples notoires du Conte du graal, du Tristan de Béroul ou du Roman de la rose de Guillaume de Lorris. Au-delà des raisons accidentelles – mort de l’auteur, lacune de la tradition manuscrite – difficilement mesurables, on questionnera la pertinence de la notion d’achèvement pour les œuvres médiévales. Comment pense-t-on, au Moyen Âge, la fin d’une œuvre ? Cette dernière doit-t-elle nécessairement aboutir à une forme close qui seule achèverait de lui donner un sens ? Est-ce l’achèvement, le fait de mener l’œuvre à chief, de lui donner par-là une forme de couronnement, qui fait l’œuvre ? La question de l’achèvement de l’œuvre soulève celle de l’achèvement du sens.On envisagera les œuvres inachevées –ou supposées telles– qui travaillent sans fin « l’impossibilité d’en finir », et la question des continuations qui les prolongent. Laisser inachevé, donc, pour pouvoir toujours recommencer. S’interrompre, s’arrêter de dire pour laisser la place au « contre-dit ». À l’inverse, comment clore ? Comment mettre un terme à l’écriture, sortir de l’œuvre ?

The conference Transmission of knowledge on fish and aquatic animals, texts and images (Antiquity, Middle Ages, 16th century) will be the closing event of GDRI Zoomathia, which ends at the end of 2021. The Zoomathia 2021 conference in Caen, organized by the ICHTYA program of Craham, is an extension of the 2017 conference.This conference wishes to emphasize, without being limited to ichthyofauna, on the scientific contribution of ancient sources on aquafauna in the broad sense and the biological and ecological knowledge of the species that compose it; the transmission and diachronic evolution of scholarly data on this fauna through the various knowledge media (texts, iconography - mosaics, illuminated manuscripts, early printed books and engravings, etc.); the mode of representation and identification of marine animals species permitted by old documents and related methodological issues.

Between Art and Life: the Gargantuan World of Medieval Laughter
For this special issue of Vox medii aevi, dedicated to the modern interpretations of medieval humour, comedy, and laughter, we invite original research addressing the subjects of perception and appropriateness of laughter in the eyes of the church and lay authors and authorities; laughter as a form of mystical experience; ritualized laughter; laughter as a didactic weapon; laughter as an instrument of social control; and gendered experiences of laughter.

Eschatology is one of the central components of medieval Christian culture. The end of the world, the Last Judgment, salvation, Messianism, the Antichrist, the Apocalypticism and millenarianism are inescapable elements in what we may generally describe as "Medieval eschatology". It is the intention of the International Conference "The Medieval Eschatology" to provide a venue for reflecting on these as well as other eschatological issues that may be proposed. This can be done analytically or descriptively from both a practical and theoretical approach.

A handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches
On June 18th and 19th 2020 the Badische Landesbibliothek organizes the international and interdisciplinary congress “The return of the Wigalois - a handwriting of the 15th century in the focus of new research approaches”. The congress presents and discusses first results of the again possible scientific altercation with materiality of the handwriting, its production context and the book market at the upper Rhine, for which it was produced.

The Classics in the Pulpit. Ancient Literature and Preaching in the Middle Ages
The aim of the conference is to shed new light on this both striking and irritating practice. Papers (25 min) can deal with topics such as the reasons and occasions for the use of the classics in preaching, the hermeneutic and literary strategies applied in order to adapt pagan mythology to homiletic needs, the social and educational background of preachers and their audiences, the connections of classicizing sermons with other fields of literature such as vernacular poetry, or the discourse they provoked within the clerical milieu. Applications from all relevant disciplines (e.g. history, literature, theology, philosophy) are welcome.

Le monde médiéval (mundus), création divine, ordonnée et parfaite, se suffit du principe divin qui en règle le fonctionnement. Cette perfection du monde, inséparable de sa clôture et de son intégrité, semble aussi avoir été pensée comme principe de la création humaine. Partant de réflexions sur le haut Moyen Âge, l’objectif de cette journée d’étude sera de suivre la pertinence, la survivance et peut-être l’effacement et le remplacement de ce schéma de pensée sur toute la période médiévale.

Guido delle Colonne and his Reception in Medieval Europe
Guido delle Colonne’s Historia destructionis Troiae has been a phenomenal success since its composition at the end of the 13th century. Nevertheless, academic studies remain limited and questions remain open about the author himself (judge, historian and poet?), about his sources – including the essential Trojan novel in verse by Benoît de Saint Maure –, about the construction and style of his work and about its intents in a particularly troubled period. While significant progress has been made in recent years, studies are far from being exhaustive and the case deserve to be considered anew. Historia's interest lies in particular in the translations, adaptations and summaries it generated throughout Europe until the 17th century. This international conference aims thus to shed new lights on the original text as well as on the diversity of its appropriations, between filiation and emancipation. In this regard, the spectacular diffusion has contributed to strenghten a Trojan European literature.

Princely mirrors at the boundary of genders. Functional approaches to a hybrid reality
L’objectif de ce colloque sera de réinterroger une littérature aux contours sinueux et pourtant cloisonnée sous une définition arbitraire qui cache une part importante des potentialités d’étude d’un tel corpus. En choisissant de prendre le parti non de la forme mais de la fonction, de l’usage des miroirs aux princes, au travers notamment de l’étude de leur réception manuscrite, de leur combinaison avec d’autres formes de littérature, mais aussi du projet de l’auteur (au moyen notamment de la préface au texte, si celle-ci existe), nous souhaitons souligner la grande plasticité des textes spéculaires qui dépassent largement les cadres typologiques restreints dans lesquels nous les classons habituellement.

Commentaries on Ibn Sīnā’s Qaṣīdat al-nafs
Two postdoc research grants
Suite à la nomination à un poste définitif d’un de nos chercheurs, nous avons le plaisir d’offrir deux bourses de recherches postdoctorales pour une durée de 12 mois et de 9 mois respectivement pour le projet « Avicenna East & West I : Commentaries on the Qaṣīdat al-nafs ». Le objectifs du projet sont : (1) Comprendre la diffusion de la pensée avicennienne au sens large dans l’Orient musulman à travers l’analyse des commentaires du Poème de l’âme. (2) Procéder à une analyse transversale des commentaires pour déterminer sur quelles questions précises, en quels termes, en utilisant quels types d’arguments, quelles références, quel type de discours, les commentateurs s’affrontent au texte et entre eux.

Innovation and medieval communities in north west Europe (1200-1500)
En quoi l’innovation participe-t-elle de la redéfinition des groupes sociaux entre le XIIIe et le XVIe siècle ? Inscrit dans un vaste programme de recherche, dédié à l’étude de l’innovation en contexte à la fin du Moyen Âge, l’objectif de ce premier colloque, dont le but est d’amorcer une collaboration suivie autour de ce thème de recherche, sera donc triple : Observer l’accueil de l’innovation en fonction des communautés étudiées ; repérer des stratégies de diffusion ou de refus, toujours en fonction des différentes communautés retenues ; comprendre le complexe régime de novation et de transformation dans ces sociétés pré-modernes qui, d’un côté réprouvent « la novelleté », et de l’autre répondent à des impératifs de changement.

The influence of the arts in the Middle Ages
Reflections on the manuscript: aquitain BnF lat.1139
Le manuscrit Paris, BnF, lat. 1139 est un manuscrit composite, aux origines mal connues, conservé dans les collections de l’abbaye de Saint-Martial de Limoges dès le milieu du XIIIe siècle. Issu de l’une des plus prestigieuses bibliothèques médiévales, il comprend les premières manifestations d’une nouvelle manière de chanter la louange divine. Ce colloque s’adresse aux chercheurs issus de différentes disciplines (histoire, histoire de l’art, histoire de la littérature, musicologie, philologie, paléographie...) afin d’appréhender ce manuscrit complexe dans toutes ses dimensions. Cette rencontre sera l’occasion de combler les pans laissés vierges par l’historiographie, notamment ce qui concerne les parties les plus récentes du manuscrit.

Preaching in chapiters in medieval religious orders (3)
Le rôle et le fonctionnement des réunions capitulaires (chapitres provinciaux ou généraux) dans l’organisation institutionnelle des ordres religieux à partir du XIIe siècle ont fait l’objet, au cours des dernières décennies, d’enquêtes qui en ont souligné l’importance tant à l’échelle des ordres eux-mêmes que des relations entre ces structures et la papauté. Certains auteurs ont par ailleurs mis en évidence, la façon dont, par delà leur fonction première de correction et d’élaboration du ius proprium des ordres, ces réunions représentaient une occasion de discussions et d’échanges oraux auxquels les comptes rendus écrits ne font pas nécessairement justice, alors qu’ils sont pourtant un lieu essentiel de la construction d’une cohésion d’ordre...

Text as object in the Middle Ages
The International Medieval Congress (IMC) is the largest medieval studies conference in the world. In line with the Special Thematic Strand in 2019 “Materialities” and the recent creation of the strand “Manuscript studies”, we organize sessions on “Text as object in the Middle Ages”. Texts, indeed, are at the same time an idea and a form. The latter is the result of a combination of inherited social uses and specific intentions by the various actors involved in transmitting the text as idea. This process begins with the authors, continues to the craftsmen (parchment and paper makers, copyists and chancery clerks, painters and illuminators, sculptors and weavers, booksellers…) and then on to possessors, readers, archives and libraries. All textual artefacts are concerned: manuscripts, charters, inscriptions, tapestries, seals, coins, etc.
